I'm "friends" with Craig Allen (the weatherman) on Facebook, and he answered the question we've all been wondering:
So, in answer to 'will I have school/ should I go to work?' : There is no reason not to in the morning but early dismissal should be thought about. Leave work early too and beat the craziness. I can almost assure you there will be no school or work on Friday as the worst will first be winding down. So consider it a long holiday gift.

The LIE should have been closed earlier than it was back in February. I'm afraid we're going to have a repeat of it. Which is probably why they are going to close them early! good luck to everyone who has to drive in this. I am so glad that DH's school is still closed the rest of the week!

I'm freaking out! I need to get from coram to st. Catherine's in Smithtown at 6 am Fri to have a baby!!! This was my biggest fear of having a winter baby and its coming true lol My son was due in April, and that was still one of my biggest fears - delivering early in a snowstorm! Is there a hotel near the hospital you can stay at Thurs night if the weather gets too bad? I hope everything goes smoothly for you!

Newsday just posted that they are thinking of closing all major highways early tomorrow before the evening rush as a safety precaution and due to budget cuts.
What? So they don't have the money for sanders and salters anymore? WTF? This makes no sense at all.
Yet our taxes are some of the highest in the nation. Yeah LI really is a swell place to live lately....
Unbelievable!
He's trying to get everyone to use mass transit. I can't even imagine what kind of nightmare that will be!
Mass transit on LI? Riiightttt.... I will just take the subway to Hauppauge tomorrow .
I work for a hospital system so have to go in from the South Shore of Suffolk to the North Shore of Western Nassau.
Fortunately I'm in outpatient and I trust my boss to let us and the patients go home early if it's getting really bad.
I already suspect more than half of my patients are going to cancel today and tomorrow anyway due to the pending weather.
Be safe out there everyone!

This happened to someone I know last year during that big snowstorm.
I believe they just left early before the worst hit and sat in the hospital. It sucks, but are you really going to be sleeping at home anyway, anxious and worried to get there for a 6AM appointment?

I don't think it's definite. I think it was just a warning that they are planning to close the roads earlier if it's getting bad.

Anyone know when the LIRR stops running? DH has to work tonight and takes the train into the city, not sure if the trains will be running by the time he gets out tomorrow morning.

I hope they keep the roads open long enough for me to get home today. I teach in queens and its not accessible easily by train so I had to drive in. No early dismissal ever for nyc teachers.

Look on their website. Its based on the amount of inches on the ground because of the 3rd rail. Its pretty high though.

Re: Snow in the forcast.....with FIXED Map!!
What kills me is- if they close the main roads, that means people will just be taking side roads home- which IMO are so much more dangerous than the major highways. Nobody is going to shelter in place. If they are at work, and can't leave early, they are going to try to get home. Why can't they get plows out ahead of the storm? Nah, just shut the roads and never mind the people who now have to find an alternate route home. Mass transit on LI is a joke- who can take mass transit?

This is infuriating to me. We pay our municipalities (a LOT of money) to address storms as they come -- which means buying equipment, maintaining equipment, prepping the roads, staffing the trucks/equipment, deciding how to treat the roads -- shutting the roads is not really a solution. Imagine if I went to my customers and said, "Hey thanks for giving me money to protect you when you need me. This situation might be rough so I'm not going to do anything for you - just don't go to YOUR job and stay home until the situation goes away." Gov Cuomo can close the Thruway upstate and people can easily get around because counties/towns up there have planned for the storms - all major roads are cleared -- the LIE is our main road and shutting it down only pushes those drivers to less cared for streets. If they say this is due to budget cuts, I'm even angrier. The winter of 2011-12 we had very little snow -- yet we didn't hear any surplus chatter or get any refunds in our taxes....

Snow in the forcast.....with FIXED Map!!
Craig Allen's last update:
So where do we stand this morning................. Not much precip through the daytime hours. Intermittent light snow or snow showers, sometimes mixed with a little sleet or freezing rain. No significant accumulation through the day but as you saw prior to sunrise, even a little dusting can cause thoughtless drivers to slide off the road or into a median/guardrail. More accidents occur in the first 1/2 hour of a snowfall because no one adjusts fast enough to the deteriorating conditions. By the way, you see those long white lines on the L.I. highways recently, especially exit and entrance ramps? That is not the NYSDOT spreading lines of coke for all you partiers...that is a briny liquid which gets absorbed into the roadbed and hopefully helps to melt the snow at the start. It is cheaper and less destructive than rock salt but I'm not sure if it's more or less effective.
Forecast appears to be on track. Most models have converged on approx 1/3' to 3/4' liquid equivalent precip. If anything, the trend continues to lower slightly with each run, especially regional and short term models because the primary storm will develop just a little too slow. Inotherwords, it will be far enough offshore when the big kaboom occurs, otherwise we'd be in for a foot or two.
Taking the estimated qpf and using the standard 10:1 ratio of liquid to snow would yield 3 to 7" of snow. But when the temperature drops to as low as we're expecting (teens and single digits) that ratio increases. The question is, to what? 12:1? 15:1 20:1? It's very rare to get a 20:1 or greater ratio around here but it is possible. More likely though, take the middle ground of 15:1 and that yields ~ 5-10", which is the range I've chosen and stuck with for now. There are still dozens of posts and tweets saying the storm will be an over-achiever. It's already phasing, more moisture, the models are wrong, the models are wrong and the models are wrong. So don't be surprised if you hear predictions of 2 feet plus or wishes for similar conditions to last year's central L.I. blockbuster snowstorm (3 feet+). If you do hear or read that, consider the source before a last minute run to Costco or BJ's for the super-duper pack of 50 rolls of extra soft t.p. I still believe, we'll all be able to get around by Saturday, the latest around here. I will say this though, LI and CT are likely to be at the high end. I can see parts of the north shore, especially out east, and in CT, east of the CRV and then out to RI, BOS and Cape Cod getting pummeled with higher amounts and stronger winds
Not to say there won't be some drifts of 1-2+ feet in the immediate area but have fun trying to measure the true snowfall, LOL. There will be so much blowing and drifting, you won't know where to stick the ruler in for accuracy! From a wet snow this afternoon, this will become a dry, powdery snow tonight, heavy at times, blown sideways by 20-40 mph winds, reducing visibility to under 1/4 mile, probably for 3 hours or more- and that is the definition of blizzard conditions. So while this will not have amounts of snow that would cripple a region for days, it is still dangerous. It could you leave you stranded in a white out since even the best plowing will be useless until long after the storm ends and the wind subsides. Please....be home and safe before nightfall.
You have a few hours to fill your gas containers for snowblowers and possibly even generators. Power outages are a distinct possibility. If you are going to shovel, wait til the storm is over or it will be a needless waste of energy. The snow will blow back on to everything you tried to clear. Take warming breaks as well.
I doubt there will be school tomorrow. It'll be interesting to see what NYC's new mayor decides to do about this. The worst of the storm will first be winding down in the morning. The cold that follows will be dangerous as well with frostbite possible in only 10-15 minutes time on exposed skin.
For those ready to crack 'so much for global warming' jokes...the next storm for later Sunday into Monday will likely bring rain. Then another shot of brutal cold to follow. It's simply called 'winter'...one that is reaching extremes at each end of the spectrum.
PS- I just glanced at the latest gfs model. I haven't seen the actual numbers but graphically, it appears to have upped the available moisture by having a spoke hang back over us longer, before further intensification out to sea. Lets see if any other models pick up on this feature.
Either way, stay safe. It's going to be a rough 18-24 hours

I can't understand how they can not have the plows ready to go and keeping up with the storm! This makes me so mad. My block wasn't plowed for 3 days after the February snow storm, and even then it was by a neighbor who had enough and borrowed a work plow! Totally unacceptable!

This may be a stupid question, but what happens of you're on the LIE before 4:00pm? Do they force you off at the next exit, or let you continue on and stop letting new ppl on?

I'm not sure. I'll have to ask. I would imagine they just stop letting people on...
ETA: BIL said, 'depending on where you are and how bad conditions are, they'll take you off'.

I'm from upstate and have been on the Thruway several times when they've closed it -- they don't let you on, but if you're already en route then you're encouraged to take an alternate route. While you may be "allowed" travel to your destination (ie they don't remove you from road), if you get stuck/stranded/hurt no one comes to get you because you're technically on a closed road. It's similar to mandatory evacuations, IMO. You can try to stick it out, but no help is coming for you.
