I think this directly follows the "lack of discipline" movement that parents seem to be so fond of!

Awesome! Right teach your children to behave like we were taught and there wouldn't be this many "ill-behaved" children.

I dont know - I'm not bothered by this.
I spend a ton of money when I go out with our kids. If these places dont want my business, I'd rather give to someone who does.
I also do understand why people without kids would want to travel, go out to dinner, go to a movie, etc. without having children around.
Now, if they make Disney kids-free, I'll definitely have a problem with that

Re: So apparently there is a "child free" movement brewing...
i dont understand why everyone is always under the impression that "back in day" no one misbehaved, there were no undisciplined children.
People are so used to associating their "golden age" with Leave it to Beaver, and Donna Reed....I think people see the past through rosed colored glasses and need to get over themselves. I dont think its the children - I think its a lot of the selfishness and sense of entitlement with this new generation of adults - the me me me in society - "I" want a pleasnt dinner - I dont want to be disturbed by children.
i think its BS.

I agree to an extent. I think there is a difference between a child who is not well behaved and a child who is having a tantrum or a melt down... which they ALL have.
Even the most well behaved kids freak out. To start banning children from Harry Potter movies is taking it a bit far IMO.

That stood out to me in the article as just silly. Was anyone really taking a 6 year old to see the latest Harry Potter movie? I thought it was too violent for my kids right now.

Re: So apparently there is a "child free" movement brewing...
Personally, i don't bring my toddler to upscale restaurants. We did once and I had so much anxiety that she would misbehave that I could even enjoy my (very) expensive meal. (She was perfectly fine, by the way. She's a pretty good girl. )
When I go out to a bar, I don't really want to see/hear/think about little kids.
I was getting a mani/pedi on Sunday and there were two moms who brought their little girls (about 5 years old) for manis/pedis too. It was crowded, the girls kept smudging their nails, bumping into other patrons, the moms were getting impatient, chastising their daughters. I needed to go for a massage after that.
So, while I think that the "movement" is kind of silly and mean-spirited, I do agree that there should be some places that remain kid-free, though there doesn't have to be a logo for it. It's more of a common sense thing to me.

Doesn't bother me in the least. Before I had a baby, I felt the same way sometimes. I used to say that instead of smoking and non smoking that they used to have back in the day for restaurants, they should make it kids and kids free seating.
Just because I had a baby doesn't mean I forgot what it was like to be child free and not want to sit with kids.

Don't get me wrong. If we are in the mall and my DD smiles and waves at you and you don't wave back -- I am silently hoping that you fall down the escalator. BUT if I am paying $200 for a nice dinner with my DH, and I have to listen to a kid, whining and crying the whole time, I am going to be ******.

Exactly! And in the rare case I can get a sitter for my three and go out with DH, I dont want to hear someone else's kids carrying on

Exactly I am not saying that I was never bad or we didn't have issues, but a lot of adults with children these days don't teach kids respect or how to behave. I am (was) a first grade teacher. I saw first hand which children were disciplined and those that were not. My dd is 14 months and already has meltdowns in public. And we do everything everything we can to avoid them in certain places. If she is getting fussy or cranky in a restaurant we take her outside. I would not let her sit there and scream and ruin people's dinners.
I also think there is a time and place for children. If I am out with my husband for dinner around 9:00 spending 100.00 or more on dinner, my kids are home and I don't want it ruined by other kids.

I agree with this wfw. especially the escalator part.
I have seen kids strike their parents in public, turn on their heel and storm off.
I would kick that kid out of my establishment too. if the parents don't want to teach boundaries. someone has to.

I do think though that people as adults forgot what THEY were like when they were kids. and I am of the mind that an adult who ******* about minor annoyances was more likely an annoying bratty kid.

Were any of us alive in 1960? Im sure there were unruly children.
If you are at a $400/night restaurant - thats fine, but I hear this ALL over now.
IMO, its a result of the "I" mentality of this generation and not the kids.

Re: So apparently there is a "child free" movement brewing...
I didn;t read the article but I get the gist of it. I think if your children do not know how to behave(and most parents know this) then they should not be in nice restaurants. However, not every parent wants to eat at Friendly's, Fridays or Applebees myself and my husband included. we do take our kids out to expensive restaurants. We put them in highchairs and bring snacks, activities and keep them entertained. Often we will go early so we make sure not to disturb others., They never cry the only thing they may do is speak loudly and we are working on "inside voices" right now.
They have been doing this since they were 3 weeks old and they know ALL about eating in a restaurant. Actually read this post I put on another message board where I got mostly lambasted for wanting to take our kids for an early NYE dinner at a fine dining restaurant. if you can't make it until the end, I updated and they did wonderfully and we got many compliments from staff AND patrons about their behavior.

I couldn't agree more!!! I have a child and I'll be the first to say they don't belong everywhere . . . ESPECIALLY high end, high priced luxury places. But banning in grocery stores is taking it a bit too far. That's a necessity, not a luxury!
I'm surprised that people actually disagree with this!

I once got hit, and punished for an entire day b/c I silently took off my shoes in church, and then put them back on.
I walked into the house, got hit, and was sent to my room for the rest of the day.
I was not even in kindergarten yet.
Trust me, there were no unruly children in my house.

Re: So apparently there is a "child free" movement brewing...
Certain very upscale restaurants I can understand this (I'm talking like steak house upscale where you're spending $200 for a meal), but movie theaters, regular restaurants, condominium outdoor areas?? That's just age discrimination IMO and there's no reason for it. Children are a part of life whether you have them or not. Get over it. Dont like it? Dont leave the house. The whole idea of this is just silly IMO.
ETA: I forgot abot grocery stores. How are parents supposed to go grocery shopping without their children. I'm a single mom and I dont have the luxury of going foodshopping while my husband watches my child. If I go food shopping, DS goes food shopping too. And even if my food store offered "child care" while I shop, I would not use it. I don't know these people...I'm not leaving my 2 year old with some random grocery store worker. This is absurd! People have been taking their children grocery shopping for decades. I wasnt aware that food stores were for adults only
