these threads always turn into this. No one said it was "evil" but I, for one, do not need a materialistic item to remind me of my pregnancy or birth. Those things are etched into my mind forever

I did not say there was anything "wrong" with it....I just think the term is ridiculous. Chat Icon

I did. People make it out to be some materialistic thing when, at least for me, it's a commemorative gift that will forever remind me of my pregnancy and first born child. DH got me a gorgeous sapphire ring that I wear whenever I am not with DS (like every day at work).

People seem to get pretty worked up over this. No one "needs" it, the baby is obviously "enough" for all of us. But to get a gift from your husband for bearing his child is really not such an evil thing Chat Icon

This was very well said! Chat Icon Chat Icon

I hate the term, but like the idea of a gift to mark such a momentous milestone in your life. DH knew what we went through to have a baby, sat with me during my crippling MS so the figurine is so special because it's us as a family. Of course I wouldn't forget the day even w/o a giftChat Icon , but it means a lot that DH wanted to do something nice.

Re: So DH did a little poll of his own...

Hmmm... I answered "yes" but, technically I didn't get one! DH cut me out a picture of Diamond Earrings but said he didn't buy them b/c he wanted me to pick them out (what size I liked mostly) but, since DS has been with us I haven't had the chance to go looking with DH so.....I still haven't gotten them so maybe I should have answered NO Chat Icon But I did appreciatethe thought Chat Icon

It wasn't really a "push" present per se though my DH was just amazed by the whole pregnancy/delivery experience and just really felt he wanted to get me a gift to "thank"me so to speak - and,i wasn't going tocomplain about it Chat Icon

No, I never heard of one either until I came on here. However, I did get a gorgeous baby, so that was a lovely present in itself!!!

The One My Mother Gave Me ;-)

Re: So DH did a little poll of his own...

What I find most interesting about this thread is the number of people who said they never heard of this before coming to LIF. My siblings and I are all over 35. My father got my mother . . . a car, a mink coat, and a handmade diamond & platinum necklace as "push" presents.

As for me, I selected other. DH gave me a necklace for Christmas that had my birthstone & DD's birthstone in it.

I never heard of the term. The term is ridiculous, but I totally understand the concept and think it's a nice thing for your DH to do.

I'm with 90% of the ladies who said no, they never got a "push present" (I feel like an arse saying that ...a push present.... how silly. LOL

I don't think the idea is stupid, I think the name for it is though.

Yes I got one. DH bought me a necklace with the babies birthstone. We had a schedule c-section so we knew she would definately be born in March.

It is something I will pass down to her in the future.

Re: So DH did a little poll of his own...

Yes. I got diamond earrings to represent the "sparkle I brought to his life".

I don't think it literally means push present, but I think it is a dh's way of saying how grateful they are that we endured nausea, gained a ton of weight, sciatica, got pricked, gave up many foods, and went through tremendous pain, etc... for 9 months to carry a child that, in most cases, will have his last name. I think of it as a "thank you for the most precious gift you can ever give me"
gift. KWIM?

eta: not necessary, but poignant. A heartfelt card would have done the trick too.

He bought me a nice alcoholic drink in the hospital before my milk came in- does that count? Chat Icon

Oh, I forgot about the double cheesburger and fries right after I gave birth at 3am that he had to search the neighborhood for- yes, I consider this the BEST PUSH PRESENT!Chat Icon

Re: So DH did a little poll of his own...

I got one. Did I NEED it? No. Was the birth of my child enough? Yes. But I actually think it is a nice reason to get a present! Honestly, what is silly about it? pregnancy and labor is HARD work. What's wrong with a little present at the end of it? If you look at any gift giving opportunity is there ever really a great reason???? Christmas? Valentine's Day? Your birthday? Who cares what the reason is? My husband and I like giving each other presents. I think it's great that I have a beautiful necklace that reminds me of my son every time i look at it. I would think it was silly to get mad at someone for not getting me a present. But why would giving or getting a gift be silly? I guess then if your husband sends you flowers for no good reason that's silly too? It's just like people who get each other presents when they get married. Of course that wasn't the reason to get married but it can still be a nice gesture.

I didn't get sh*t...nothing. DH bought me a card, but he never signed it or gave it to me. I found it laying around the house after I came home from the hospital.

Re: So DH did a little poll of his own...

Did not get one. Did not expect one. Did not even know about it until I read it on this site.

I only asked DH for the private room in the hospital. So I guess that count as the present.

I didn't "push" either but I did get a baby shoe necklace engraved with her name and birthdate for Christmas (3 months later).

I DO think they need to come up with a better name for this though, no? Chat Icon
