Re: So DH did a little poll of his own...
silly concept and completely unnecessary IMO. we are in this together, he doesn't have to get me a present.

Re: So DH did a little poll of his own...
I voted other. DH did give me a gift when DD was born, but it really wasn't a push present. It was a piece of jewelry I'd wanted for a while and he wanted to give me for a significant moment in our life together.
I didn't get anything when DS was born, nor did I expect to get anything.

I did. People make it out to be some materialistic thing when, at least for me, it's a commemorative gift that will forever remind me of my pregnancy and first born child. DH got me a gorgeous sapphire ring that I wear whenever I am not with DS (like every day at work).
People seem to get pretty worked up over this. No one "needs" it, the baby is obviously "enough" for all of us. But to get a gift from your husband for bearing his child is really not such an evil thing
i am glad you posted this... i am not looking for a "push present" per se but i would like to buy something for myself to commemorate my DS' birth - but i also want to get something for my DH for the same reason. if my DH gets me something, great, but if not i plan on going shopping with him to pick something out for the both of us.
i think the term "push present" has gotten such a bad rap... none of us NEEDS anything as a "reward" for having a baby, but i think it's so nice to be able to look at a gift you received, or bought yourself, that you know will always remind you of the day your DC was born.
That is certainly understandable and sweet. But it needs a new name.

Re: So DH did a little poll of his own...
I dont know if I'd call my gift a push present but DH felt the need to do something nice and I appreciated it. I got two Dooney bags-one brown, one black to use as diaper bags. For older DD I got diamond earrings.
I think if its an unsolicited gift its a wonderful thing.
