So for my first PG question: Need hair dye help!
I'm 29 and have grays. I haven't dyed my hair since getting my BFP, b/c I read somewhere that permanant dye is bad during the first tri. But they're getting out of hand. What kind of dye can I use, if any?

Re: So for my first PG question: Need hair dye help!
I looked this up for a pregnant friend at work a few weeks ago and found this:
Are hair dyes safe during pregnancy? According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), hair dyes are probably safe to use during pregnancy because so little dye is absorbed through the skin. However, it is still important to be cautious, therefore many health care providers recommend that pregnant women not use permanent hair dyes during the first three months.
While the absorption through the skin is minimal, the concern is that breathing fumes during the process could be harmful to the developing baby. Permanent hair dyes contain ammonia which has a strong chemical fume. The recommendation is to avoid hair dyes that contain ammonia. The chemical fume warning also applies to straightening products as well.
Semi-permanent dyes or a highlighting process may be considered safer for pregnant women. With highlights, the dye is enclosed in foil and won’t be absorbed into the skin. Vegetable dyes such as henna are also considered likely to be safe for coloring hair during pregnancy.
Can you use the wash out kind for now? Or maybe see if you can find a vegetable based dye. Maybe even call your hair salon and see what they suggest.. I remember once getting my hair done and there was a pregnant woman getting her hair dyed and they were discussing how the hair dye was safe for her to use. Maybe your salon offers something like this? I really dont know though, I dont dye my hair.
ok im rambling now

Personally I would try to wait out at least the first trimester....after reading that it keeps saying "probably safe" but that word "probably" would scare me.
I highlight my hair and plan on having roots the entire pregnancy. it's not worth the risk in my book...
That being said...I have heard that the natural hair dyes could be ok. I would ask your OB to be safe.

Re: So for my first PG question: Need hair dye help!
u have to do what makes u feel comfortable. my hair dresser, myself and all my friends highlight and dye our hair the whole time and everyone is 100% fine. its like everything else there is no proof. I am sure a million people would say its extremeley unsafe to ride on a subway during preganancy but all us new yorkers do it and we are all fine.

i've been told SO many different things about this topic... for me, im not comfortable with using any type of hair dye... i dont care if its herbal/natural or whatever its just not something that sits right with me to do while preggo
i think its really about your own personal comfort level... i would talk to you doctor and think about what will make you feel good

I totally agree!!! I started a new job at 5W and needed highlights badly. I have naturally light brown hair but have heavily highlighted it blonde for the last 5 years. After speaking to friends and my doctor, who all said that highlighting is completely safe ( bc the foils dont even touch the scalp) I went for it. There are a million things you can drive yourself crazy about during pregnancy and this shouldn't be one of them.

Re: So for my first PG question: Need hair dye help!
I have major grays right in front and I wear my hair back every day so it is getting a bit ridiculous. However I pormised my mom I would wait until the 12 week mark, which will be this Friday. I have an appointment on Saturday thank GOD! However the paperwork I went over with my doctor says that hair dying, perming, and highlighting are safe. SO if my doc thinks it's safe then so do I!

My doctor said no dying, but highlighting was ok, so that's what I'm doing. I did wait until after the first trimester though and I'm hoping that this lasts for a while.

Wow, thanks for the help, ladies! I think I'm going to wait until I'm out of the first tri... unless I find a reliable vegetable-based dye in Whole Foods this weekend.
