So sad. 4 year old dies in washing machine
This story is so sad. My friends DH was one of the cops on the scene. The cops and paramedics are really torn up about this.
4 year old dies in washing machine
Becareful of front loading washers and your kids.

How awful.
My brother hates responding to scenes with kids. He said they are the absolute worst.

How unbelievably sad
But what I don't understand (and I don't have a front-loading machine, but how did a 15 month old turn it on?????
Can someone explain it to me, just in case I am not seeing the obvious - thanks

You just have to push the buttons. It's really easy. My kids help out with the laundry all the time, they know which buttons to push to start the washer.

Now that it is mentioned, hoe can a 15th mo old reach the buttons? Mine are on top at leat 3 feet if not 3 1/2 - 4 feet above ground

This is what I was going to ask. Especially if it has the drawer underneath...not to say that one did.

Some machines have the buttons along the side of the machine. I can see it happening - it's truely terrible.

That is so horrible but I couldn't see a 15 month old knowing how to turn on a washing machine. I'm not trying to start drama but I just can't picture it.

i am thinking the same thing. i have a front-loading washer and once the cycle is done it is set to "off" and you have to turn the knob and pull it out to start the washer again.
not saying it didn't happen - i know there are all different kinds of washers - but it's so hard for me to imagine it.

Re: So sad. 4 year old dies in washing machine
Maybe it was an older front loading machine, like the type at some laundromats? My mom has a new front loading machine and there is no way no how my 16 month old could reach the buttons to turn it on. I'm 5'1" and it's a stretch for me....not to mention there are a good 3 buttons to push before it goes on.
What a terrible story

Re: So sad. 4 year old dies in washing machine
I could see how it could happen. On mine if someone just randomly pressed the buttons it might turn on. It's time they build child locks into the machines!! The door shouldn't even open easy enough for a 4 year old to do it.

I dont see how a 15 month old could do it either. They would have to push the buttons hard.

Re: So sad. 4 year old dies in washing machine
i have a front loader and yes my DS can reach it, turn the knobs and press the buttons. I dont know if he can "turn it on" on purpose, but if i wasn't watching possibly by accident he def could. Ours is also stackable so its not that tall and DS can reach it. However, we would NEVER leave him alone with it, and watch him like a hawk if he's around it. In fact after reading the story and me DH just said we will make sure to be extra extra careful, with my DS and when we have another too

Re: So sad. 4 year old dies in washing machine
Ayla at 15 months knew exactly how to turn it on, simply by watching me. It's one button on th, which she could each. The midle dial needs to be turned and then the button on the left needs to be pressed. That starts it.
Although this is a freak accident it's possible. My heart breaks for this family.

Re: So sad. 4 year old dies in washing machine
I have brand new front loader washer and dryer. A child could very easily start my machine. The buttons are so easy to push. Plus, not everyone buys the stands that go under the machine. I didn't buy them, and my machines are low to the ground.

So horrible!!!!!!
For those questioning it: DS has been turning on our machine for months now. (He is 17 1/2 months) It's a front loader with buttons on the front, only about 30 inches off the ground. There is no handle to turn.

unless the buttons are hard to press in, i think it's totally possible. my 15 month old operates the DVD player just from watching me do it - i imagine the washing machine is no different.
SO sad... i get so nervous when i think of all the possible hazards out there, makes me want to just hold my son and never let go
