Re: So sad. 4 year old dies in washing machine
how horrible!!! My machine has to be pressed on, then you turn the knob to a setting, then you press the start button. I guess it's possible. Thank goodness I can hear the machine chime on. But yet another reason that door is closed once they walk.

I could see how it could happen. On mine if someone just randomly pressed the buttons it might turn on. It's time they build child locks into the machines!! The door shouldn't even open easy enough for a 4 year old to do it.
I just saw this on our local news It very easily could happen with our model- all you could have to press is one button and the door would lock and it would fill with water. But they do sell a lock that you put on the outside of the washer. I will be buying one TOMORROW!

i have a front loader and yes my DS can reach it, turn the knobs and press the buttons. I dont know if he can "turn it on" on purpose, but if i wasn't watching possibly by accident he def could. Ours is also stackable so its not that tall and DS can reach it. However, we would NEVER leave him alone with it, and watch him like a hawk if he's around it. In fact after reading the story and me DH just said we will make sure to be extra extra careful, with my DS and when we have another too
The news showed a lock you can buy to protect your kids. Its made by Safety First and retails for $15.

I am so fearful of this. Our new house has a front loading machine...just so people are aware, one step ahead sells locks.
