I've watched my mother do this to my niece before, when she was a baby, and was so congested, she was practically choking on her own mucus and couldn't breathe.
It seems insanely disgusting, but I guess it's one of those things that sometimes when the child is suffering, it works.
The moment my mom did it -- my niece was so much more relaxed and finally able to breathe. It was just a few seconds, my mom spit out the mucus and washed her mouth out, and that was it.
the way I think about it...I've done more with other extractions on his fathers behalf. with a far more dubious body part.

I've never done it, but that's not to say I wouldn't do it if it was absolutely necessary.
There's not much I wouldn't do for my son.
ditto. im pretty squeamish when it comes to most things but for my kid i'll do just about anything.

And those things you guys posted look hilarious. I'm sure they work, but I think I would be laughing too hard if I ever tried one that it wouldnt work!

I actually have that nasal aspirator but have never used it. A friend of mine gave it to me she used it alot on her DD I just couldnt get myself to use it.....the regular one I have works just fine...

Eeeww! No way
I have the battery operated aspirator or the bulb. That's it. Grossest I've done, which we all have I'm sure, is use our finger nail for the boogies on the edge of the nose. That's it!
Although, as V said... when i get a big one with the aspirator or bulb I am excited that I can help him breathe.

this is a great thread!
IDK, it's gross, but if necessary, I think I could man up but it totally depends on the situation and frankly, my saline spray does a really nice job of clearing her out - it's got some kick to it, the way it sprays. I stay away from the aspirator - at least for now. I bought the Graco one everyone on here loves, but at the time DD's nose was too small and then my ped said aspirators usually just irritate more than they help at her age and suggested saline spray so that's what we do now and it works really well!

I can't say that I would ever do that - but never say never.
On a side note - my Ped suggested this thing called a Nose Frida and it works 1,000,000 times better than the blue aspirator that you get at the hospital. You put one side on DCs nose and you suck on the other. The snot never makes it up to your mouth though.
The only problem is getting her to sit still for it
I used this with DS, there is a filter for it to prevent the buggers from getting into your mouth.
Honestly, I think its stupid. I much prefer the old bubble aspirators they give away at hospitals
My ILs love it, so to each their own I guess.

If it was a life or death situation, yes...otherwise aspirator. Just hold the opposite nostril down for better suction.

I swear by the Nose Frida gadget! And yes, you do suck the snot out, but there is no way you could swallow it (there's a filter in the middle).
This is the only thing that works, when DD is stuffed up with mucus!!
