So when did DC actually go through the terrible two's?

I think we are hitting that stage. Any BTDT Mom's have any advice on how to handle the tantrums?

Lucky for us, never. He is a really agreeable kid! He very very very rarely throws tantrums! He can be stubborn, but I wouldn’t say that we have gone through the terrible two’s at all!

We're there and I have no real good advice on how to deal with them. I'm TRYING to ignore them. We had a tantrum last night for over 20 minutes of STRAIGHT screaming, crying, throwing himself to the ground. I ignored it for that long then DH came upstairs and gave him a popsicle to distract him Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon which worked, but I don't know if that whole 20 minutes was wasted then or not. It's so hard. DS is 22 months old tomorrow. Chat Icon We'll all get through this together but this has to be the most trying time with DS so far!:

Re: So when did DC actually go through the terrible two's?

Ben is 19 mos and we've been going through some episodes for the past month or so. Some days he's fine, other days he has a fit at the slightest prevocation. We try VERY hard NOT to react to his overreaction. It seems to get worse when we give him attention when he's having a melt down. Instead, we make sure he's not anywhere where his kicking and flailing about could get him hurt and just let him get it out. Afterward, he's usually fine and back to his normal happy self.

We have also had some incidents of hitting and kicking which I've posted about. When he hits me, I firmly tell him "No" and put his hand down by his side. Then I walk away. It seems to work 99% of the time. The other 1% of the time, he goes into his crib for a few minutes.

DS started going through them when he was about 15 months old.

How long do his meltdowns last when you ignore him? My DS can go up to 30 minutes or more with screaming, flailing and such....Chat Icon

I would love to know this as well. We are trying to not react to her as well and for the most part it is okay. The hitting and the throwing have also begun and we are working on those issues. But sometimes I wonder how long the tantrums will last or if they "expect" Mommy or Daddy to soothe them. I don't want her getting used to that!

sounds like my DS (he's also 19 months)...luckily we find if we ignore it, after a couple minutes he gets over it and is happy and ready top play again

we also use this technique...however, DS tends to laugh at us half the time

Re: So when did DC actually go through the terrible two's?

Thomas has been full force terrible twos since about 15 months. Ped said they can start much earlier than two...

I have no idea how best to handle them. This upsets me... I'm not consistent and I find them SO challenging.

I'd love any tips anyone has!
