Something frustrating about politics. . .
a politics thread, what is she thinking!
Nah, this one is harmless, I promise.
Okay I am of a political persuasion that is um, pretty rare in my social circles. One thing that I have noticed, that is SO frustrating when people find out my "dirty little political affiliation secret" is that instead of maybe trying to PERSUADE me to think otherwise - they just make assumptions about MY beliefs.
Today, I literally had someone say: "How can you be a *Care Bear* supporter, don't you want the economy to improve? Don't you want the country to improve."
Obviously, every single American votes ( or should vote) for who they believe is best for the nation. But I get this reaction A LOT. Like I would vote for someone because I thought they were the WORST choice. Shouldn't I be given the benefit of the doubt that I DO believe I am making the best decision??
A better reaction would be "Well I think that *Spongebob SquarePants* is better for the economy because of A, B and C and I think he wants to do this and that for the nation - that is why I am voting for him"
This way, I would be better educated about all the options. . . and NOT just feel like I am being attacked.
Just something frustrating that I have found lately . . .

I hear you Tilde. People hear that you believe in something that they think is hooey and they immediately go on the attack and it makes you feel like they think you are small and stupid because they haven't stopped to consider that you may actually have experiences or reasons for feeling the way you do.
But... I do it sometimes too.

Re: Something frustrating about politics. . .
I completely understand how you feel. I think we be under the same affiliation. I find it especially hard working in NYC schools where we are totally expected to vote for the candidates that they want which are never the ones I agree with! I am expected to wear buttons and make campaign phone calls and when I refsue I am asked why. I feel that I am made to feel like a communist or something!

Stange Tilde...I think we're in the same boat, and interestingly enough, I get the SAME reactions.
I honestly find it insulting.
I'm making an EDUCATED decision just as much as they are. We just might not see eye to eye on the same issues.
Tilde, just curious, how do you respond? I immediately just shut down. I don't want to get into an argument, so I'd rather just let it go.
But I file those negative remarks away in my upstairs filing cabinet.

Re: Something frustrating about politics. . .
You should say something to the effect of "And what makes you think that I don't find your beliefs as obviously wrong and offensive as you find mine?"
Why would they assume that you're so woefully misguided, but be too ignorant and obtuse to treat you like you deserve evidence, oroof, or God forbid!!! Respect in your own beliefs?

This attitude frustrates me, too. Maybe it's because I am a Social Studies teacher. My extended family and I are on totally different pages when it comes to politics and the comments made about candidates (and their supporters) seem so ignorant to me. I don't want to come off professorial, so I say little.
What I am thinking is that I wish they would understand that American politics is not about good vs. evil, but about the role that you feel the government should play in the economy, social services, world affairs.

Re: Something frustrating about politics. . .
i've had the same response many times which is why i avoid political discussions at all costs, i don't need to be yelled at - which has happened to me at work - because i don't agree with you, if you want to discuss it fine but don't put me down

Ok well technically I could be FIRED for even talking about this at work so I have to be careful. When that comment was made to me TODAY I actually broke out into Hives So I HAD to cut it short.
With my family, I try to prove my points but since I am the "baby" it is hard.
You know on message boards when you have a differing opinion sometimes every single you say is analyzed and you are FORCED to OVER explain? Well, I fear that is what is going to happen if I start explaining my position. Like if I start mentioning the candidate's ideas on the economy - I am going to be asked for three sources and 14 supporters of those ideas. So I just kind of shut it down ASAP.

Yes! This is what I tried to say today! I tried to say "All those vague things you are saying about Spongebob is WHY I am voting for Care Bear." But it was like - it just couldn't translate for them. . .
Ha! Sorry that this is so juvenile sounding, I just wanted to make sure the thread stayed on topic and away from drama. Besides the fact that I received death threats during the last election bc I revealed my choice of candidate. . .

Re: Something frustrating about politics. . .
Just because you are a registered *Care Bearian* doesn't mean you have to vote that way. When you close the curtain and pull the lever no one knows but you and God who you voted for. This is why try I not to get into political discussions. I may be affiliated with one party but may vote for another and I don't think it's fair for anyone to judge me based on that affiliation.

What?
Yup in college someone made up a fake name and emailed me and told me that they were going to kill me so it would be one less vote for the candidate that they assumed that i was going to vote for.
Instead of getting sympathy from people like my professors, I was told that is why I should keep my politics private.
I was pretty sure who it was. When the person that she ASSUMED I was voting for won, she had to be physically carried from the class in hysterics. She did a great job in convincing me to see her side of the situation

Well I'm sorry that that happened to you. That is really very extreme and I don't think any normal person would do such a thing but yeah i keep political and religious opinions to myself.
Thank you I try to keep my mouth shut but sometimes it is hard!

I work for the government - Social Security. We have been told that we can't talk about our choice in this election according to the Hatch Act which makes no sense if you understand the act BUT people are getting into trouble because of poltical emails so we were told just to avoid all of it.

Re: Something frustrating about politics. . .
ARGH it happened again!!!!! How do I get into these things. This time, more people were involved.
My favorite line: "People who vote for that person should not be permitted to enjoy any of the improvements that will be offered if this person is elected - they should be forced to pay more for their necessities and day to day expenses"
WTH?! At least, in a round a bout way that is somewhat telling me what they THINK this person will accomplish, right?
From now on I will be like this guy: with my mouth SHUT! Oooh my face is this red right now !

I think it sometimes boils down to shock. some people find it hard to believe a young WOMAN would be a Care Bear supporter...or whatever the case...and their incredulity leads them to blurt out stuff like this...pretty much cutting off any avenue to a meaningful discussion or exchange of ideas.

Re: Something frustrating about politics. . .
Funny you mention this today Tilde. I JUSTTTTTT experienced something similar today...and it drove me crazy!!!
I just started my new job. I was BLOWN away by political comments that were made in front of me today. I find that a lot of people in my age bracket or field, or whatever it may be, just ASSUME that I am of a certain political persuasion and make COMPLETELY inappropriate comments in front of me WITHOUT even knowing my affiliation. It was essentially a rant on politics followed by a look in my direction for affirmation.
It happens often - this was not the first time at all. I just sit there quietly and smile. i don't reveal my affiliation. In my mind, they are completely ignorant for being totally unaware that people surrounding them have opinions differing from their own. I'm SHOCKED at how many people are lacking in the self-awareness department - especially when it comes to politics.
In my last job, I received daily emails chains that were pretty offesnsive about a political person I supported. Again, no one knew my affiliation, or cared to ask me my affiliation. It was just assumed I was with them. When I finally revealed my affiliation, I voiced how I found it really funny that NO ONE took into consideration that I might not agree with them before they sent these emails, or had these really off-color conversations in front of me. They were mortified. It just didn't OCCUR to them.
For people who are supposed to be so open minded, I was shocked at how unfathomable it could be to them that not EVERYONE agrees with their rhetoric.
