soooo annoying. I wish I was more private about my beliefs instead of always spewing everything out for the world to see! 0
Matilde, don't ever let what people will think of you or say about you stiffle you if you want to express yourself.
of course, this is coming from an "attention *****" so take it as you will.
but I've never been one to let my popularity matter more than my voice.

I completely understand how you feel. I think we be under the same affiliation. I find it especially hard working in NYC schools where we are totally expected to vote for the candidates that they want which are never the ones I agree with! I am expected to wear buttons and make campaign phone calls and when I refsue I am asked why. I feel that I am made to feel like a communist or something!
Are you SERIOUS? They actually IMPOSE this at your job ??? In a PUBLIC school?

I was just about to ask the same thing. I think that's terrible. I prefer to leave my politics out of my workplace - that would really tick me off!

a politics thread, what is she thinking!
Nah, this one is harmless, I promise.
Okay I am of a political persuasion that is um, pretty rare in my social circles. One thing that I have noticed, that is SO frustrating when people find out my "dirty little political affiliation secret" is that instead of maybe trying to PERSUADE me to think otherwise - they just make assumptions about MY beliefs.
Today, I literally had someone say: "How can you be a *Care Bear* supporter, don't you want the economy to improve? Don't you want the country to improve."
Obviously, every single American votes ( or should vote) for who they believe is best for the nation. But I get this reaction A LOT. Like I would vote for someone because I thought they were the WORST choice. Shouldn't I be given the benefit of the doubt that I DO believe I am making the best decision??
A better reaction would be "Well I think that *Spongebob SquarePants* is better for the economy because of A, B and C and I think he wants to do this and that for the nation - that is why I am voting for him"
This way, I would be better educated about all the options. . . and NOT just feel like I am being attacked.
Just something frustrating that I have found lately . . .
I completely agree with you. I ask all the time okay if you think i'm wrong with carebear than what can sponge bob offer? There is no concrete answer aside from well I dont like crabby patty (lol). I'm almost use to these kind of responses now.

Yes the teacher's union makes calls to the home and tells you who to vote for obviously you have a choice but there is a lot of heavy campaigning on their part.

I think if everyone used my new terms for the candidates we could bring in a new generation of voters!!

I understand that - I have only held union jobs and it is hard to get away from the campaigning!

Thank you If I could express myself clearly and was GIVEN a chance to express myself I would love to. However, if I feel like I am being attacked - well, you have never seen an olive skinned girl BLUSH so quickly - starting with my ears and then I usually just back off!

You should say something to the effect of "And what makes you think that I don't find your beliefs as obviously wrong and offensive as you find mine?"
Why would they assume that you're so woefully misguided, but be too ignorant and obtuse to treat you like you deserve evidence, oroof, or God forbid!!! Respect in your own beliefs?
Yes! This is what I tried to say today! I tried to say "All those vague things you are saying about Spongebob is WHY I am voting for Care Bear." But it was like - it just couldn't translate for them. . .
Ha! Sorry that this is so juvenile sounding, I just wanted to make sure the thread stayed on topic and away from drama. Besides the fact that I received death threats during the last election bc I revealed my choice of candidate. . .
Where the hel l do you work?????!!!!
ETA: OK. I see where you work, but death threats?

Good old NYC public schools? The first full year I taught was in 2004. I was given a Kerry/Edwards button and told to wear it. I refused to wear it and I was asked by more than one person "so where is your button?"
This year I was asked my political affiliation infront of my entire class.

I hear you Tilde. People hear that you believe in something that they think is hooey and they immediately go on the attack and it makes you feel like they think you are small and stupid because they haven't stopped to consider that you may actually have experiences or reasons for feeling the way you do.
ITA with this completely. Well Said. Tilde I am right there with ya! I agree with you as well.

In the 2004 election I was working for a non-profit. An email was circulated by the CEO of the non profit that said something along the lines of "if you chose not to vote or if you do not vote for John Kerry, I will consider you uneducated". This is the same president of a non profit that "expected" me to attend a a pro-abortion rally on a Saturday in Manhattan. I told them I was not going. I was raving mad. I was told by an atty that non profits have different rules about circulating emails like this and I had no recourse but to quit or stick it out. I quit soon after that & started my own business.

that is so wrong, were you asked by administration in front of your class, i just can't see how that can be okay or relevant to anything in front of students
students will ask me all the time and i always remain neutral and tell them we can discuss the issues but i don't want to tell them because i wouldn't want to influence them, esp if i feel differently than their families

I cant believe that!!!
THe situation today started when a coworker JOKED for the 48374983 time that she was going to "tie me up" so that I couldn't vote on election day.
So, a few people overheard this time and she basically OUTED me. I turned to her and said "THAT is INSANELY private" and I could tell she felt bad but it was too late. . . .
