I think we're all overanalyzing. I think it was filmed AND edited in such a way that there could be NO definitive answer- no way to rule out that he WAS killed and no way to prove that he WASN'T killed.
I WANT to think that he didn't die- that we were just seeing a glimpse of what's it's like to live in that type of fear. But, IMO, if we HAD seen the next few seconds of footage- from someone else's perspective, we would have seen that he did get killed.
To me, the genious of the episode is that every possible ending could have happened.

Ok, this is getting totally nuts, but I just got this from my Mom's co-worker:

ok listen guys...u gotta wach the end of the episode again and wach closely...here is wat ul c...when tony walks into the diner he looks at himself sitting down at the table...u can be sure of this b/c he is wearing different clothes when he sits down...i dont no *** that means...in previous seasons it had been told to us that tony's dad died just as his daughter (janus) walked in...if u wach closely u will see janus walk in shortly after tony sits down...this is used to signify the possibility of that happening again...then u will c the sports store owner who tony destroyed walk in wearing a brown kinda hunting jacket...he is the guy that a couple seasons ago got into gambling trouble with tony and tony took over his store...HE IS THE 1 WHO WACKS TONY...he comes in and sits down hunched over...hiding his eyes as not wanting to be noticed...and alas..."u probly dont even here it when it happens rite?" (this is bobby talking to tony in the 1st episode of the season...tony had this flashback as he was laying down in the last episode...there would be no reason to have had that in unless it had some huge significance)...and finally...tonys daughter walking in to c her dad get shot just as janus did so many years ago...u hear the bell of her walking in and then blackness...nuthing...it signifies the neverending cycle of the soprano family...aj will become tony...meadow will become janus...carmela will become livia (tonys mom)...and cycle of violence goes on and on and on....absolutlely amazing...i HATED the ending at first...but when i wached it again...and understood it...it is really the most amazing ending possible for the show...we really would not have been satisfied with the boring u c tony get shot ending...this was priceless...remember..this was not an action show...it was a drama about a FAMILY....

I think that's a great theory. As soon as I saw Davey (sporting goods store guy), I pointed it out to DH. He had no idea who I was talking about-neither has anyone else who I've mentioned it to. But, that theory is the best I've heard!

Not the guy at the counter- it's the dirtbag looking guy who's seated at one of the booths. The show him twice, very quickly. Most people probably didn't even notice him. I only noticed him because I happened to recognize the actor right away and remembered that he had been in the Sopranos.

The guy sitting at the counter is a regular dude who owns a pizza shop in Philly. A casting director saw him and asked if he wanted to be on the Soprano's for the last episode. That's it...nothing more, nothing less.
Can we talk about the cat? I think it was Adrianna but DH says it was Christopher.

I like to think it was Adrianna but I think it was Christopher b/c he was always with Paulie.
Paulie did not like the cat so the cat refused to leave him alone. That's why DH says it was Chris. The cat trusted Tony and Tony said it killed a rat in the safehouse, that is why I think it is Adrianna.

Ditto, and as soon as I finish making dinner, I'm watching the episode again!!
A friend of mine today at work, said something about the white shoes Paulie was wearing when he and Tony were sitting outside the Pork Store, and how she's noticed over the entire series white shoes, they always stuck out to her for some reason. She said that she's noticed over the years that whenever someone gets whacked, the person doing the killing is always wearing white shoes. Whether or not this is true, got me thinking, and I've looked back at some of the episodes we have on TiVo, and noticed this too. II thought that was interesting....maybe Paulie finally snapped, he's always been somewhat of a loose cannon. Most likely not, but it was an interesting observation nonetheless.

can i just say how hysterical it is that someone put their THEORIES into an email and now it is all over the LIF, LIW and myspace - i have seen the same email (typos and all) like five times already!
and i dont believe it anyway BECAUSE the guy in the member's only jacket ( and Janine posted this earlier ) is actually a pizzeria owner and this was his first episode ever LINK
and as for the other characters that are named in the credits - they never show up in IMDB as being in prior episodes ( although i am not sure if you need to have a speaking part to be listed )

definitely not his wife. i think that was his brooklyn contact and after he got "what he needed from her" (sexual and information wise) he called tony to give him the inside news. thats why she looked so disgusted with him.
I think it also shows how the FBI guy is just like Tony. He fights with his wife, cheats on his wife, and lies/cheats/etc. the only difference is that he works for a "legitimate" organization, the FBI.

okay, totally unrelated the theories surrounding the very end of the episode...
Can someone PLEASE explain to me what driving an SUV and no parking in the leaves is all about????? I totally did not understand all that about AJ and parking in the leaves.

I was on the HBO website and someone had a theory that Tony and his family were eating at the diner that Johnny Cakes was working at. Tony is seen eating onion rings and Johnny Cakes made "amazing onion rings". Johnny Cakes thinks that Tony was the one who wacked Vito, so he gets back at him through something he loves the most...food. He poisons the whole family and Meadow comes in to see her family dying.
This is not my theory...but it would tie in some loose ends and why they even had to create a story about Vito and Johnny Cakes...

You know, it's funny...last night I was so angry. I was so mad that the episode ended that way. But this morning I woke up with a different feeling.
I think they kind of wrapped things up for everyone. Tony reconciling with Junior and realizing at the end of the day, none of it matters. All that matters is your family. Junior has no recollection of anything that happened when he was running with the mob boss, but he remembers that he never had a son.
Also, Janice is back to her old self again. Trying to get the money from Junior away from Bobby's kids.
Carmela back to building another house. They even showed her looking at decorating magazines.
AJ back to being his old self with this new job that Carm and Tony got for him. He was acting like an idiot once again sitting on the couch with his girlfriend.
Everything working out with Meadow. They are so happy now that the found out what her income could be 
And then the final scene. I was on the edge of my seat the entire time! But Tony was acting like his normal self. Just sitting with his family and watching the door. I think Chase wanted to show you what it was like to be Tony. Always have to keep looking over your shoulder.
And then the big build up...and then fade to black. I agree, also. I do recall the conversation with Bobby and Tony in the boat when they were on the lake at the cabin. When you die it all just goes silent and black. The entire show was always from Tony's perspective. Of course they show you things from other people's perspectives but the show was basically about him. They showed Meadow struggling parking so that she could walk in and watch her father get shot just like Tony saw his dad get shot. In a restaurant, the same way.
The more I think about it, the more I realize just how brilliant the ending was.

My only thought is that people in regular cars don't park in leaves- they'd get stuck. People in SUVs like to go offroading and can drive in the leaves. So, it's something that only SUV drivers could do.

But what does that have to do with causing a fire? I think Tony said to AJ something like "we told you about the leaves"
