When the FBI said "we won" he didn't mean we got Tony, he meant NJ won.
Am I the only one that got that from what he said?

I got that "we won" was that Tony won, he was happy for Tony in some weird way. At least thats how I took it.

I took it that way also- in a weird way - he likes Tony- and roots for him

Probably because Carlo went to the Feds.

Tony's not dead, he's not in witness protection. The show just ended with life going on for them. As I previously said, Tony got his kids life under control and now he's going to jail. That's the ending. They don't show him going to jail, it's implied. You can decide when that happens for him.

The theory of it going to black is interesting but if they wanted to kill Tony they would have just done it. Why leave room for guessing? They wanted us to see how Tony's life is. He has to constantly wonder if someone's there to kill him. When the guy walked to the bathroom Tony looked at him for a moment. Tony knows he can be taken out at any moment. But he wasn't. The show is over but life goes on for the Sopranos.

I think it was a brilliant episode and a great series finale.

I agree. A lot of viewers were probably on the edge of their seats expecting something to happen during the last scene. I think the purpose of the last scene was to show what Tony's life is like. Even with Phil dead and the possibility of peace between the families, he always has to worry if someone is going to take him out. He also has to worry about going to jail.

As frustrating as it was to watch, I think the ending was brilliant.

I totally took it as the FBI is going to win their case against Tony - he knew that by telling Tony where Phil was, that Tony would get him. With Carlo singing, this was just another nail in Tony's coffin.

The FBI guy had a "soft spot" for Tony. IMO, by him saying "we won" he was referring to Tony "taking care of Phil". The FBI guy's wife was clearly not happy about that phone call and he even looked a bit embarassed. If he felt he "got" Tony, he would have been jumping for joy.

I don't think that was his wife.
But I do think that he was happy that Tony got Phil. Not that he got Tony.

Agreed- it was "the contact" from the other office. I loved how they showed the FBI guy as being flawed!

definitely not his wife. i think that was his brooklyn contact and after he got "what he needed from her" (sexual and information wise) he called tony to give him the inside news. thats why she looked so disgusted with him.

Ehr, I don't think that was his wife...I think that was his "Brooklyn guy".

ETA: didn't read the other responses! Chat Icon

I think when he said "we won" (I thought he said "we're gonna win this") he looked really excited. Phil already did time in jail - they never got Tony...he always slipped through the cracks.

Re: Sopranos ending (spoilers)

I am coming into this convo late, super late. But I looooved the episode...it was so packed with symbols and meaning (you really have to think and watch to even try to understand.)

Even the song choices were insanely well thought out.

I loved that Tony DIDN'T die...YET.
I love that there wasn't a family bloodbath. I love that there is no neatly wrapped present with a bow tied. They tied up a bunch of stuff, but this show was all about going against what was acceptable in TV. (not always succeeding, but never giving in...and always up for fierce debate)

I think David Chase is frickin' brilliant.

she was an FBI agent- not his wife- I remember her from the adriana thing

the FBI can't tip off Tony to where Phil is and then use it against Tony- that was strictly under the table- and they would all get in trouble

besides the fact that Tony didn't kill Phil-

ETA- that FBI guy has nothing to do with organized crime anymore- but he is always hanging out with Tony- they are more friends then anything else- which is way Tony went to him to find Phil- he also eats at teh Pork store for free- Tony made comments about that once or twice

I think a few points like this have been missed over the seasons- the Mayor with the esplade (construction project) totally on the Mob's side, now the FBI agent- Guys like Tony couldn't get by with out help from corupt people in power

maybe the reason the FBI agent isn't on organized crime anymore is b/c he got to close to Tony to begin with

Re: Sopranos ending (spoilers)

I just read this on Sopranos message board...very interesting theory/ending!
_______________________________
He was killed....

in fact, the ending was genius if you've paid attention to the show or

are just a fan of well developed well thought out plots that all tie

together and have the memory of a champ to remember it all

the ending was simple, he got killed, but let me tell yall why and

explain in detail... There was 3 people in the room total who had a

reason to kill tony.....

the two black guys, they were paid before to kill tony but he was only

shot in the ear, this was in one of the earlier seasons,

also in the earlier seasons, the trucker who was sitting at the bar

stool, who the camera kept focusing in on, is Nikki leotardo, Phil

Leotardos nephew, he was in one of the early season episodes where Phil

and Tony have a sit down....

heres where the genius comes in....

When tonys walking in the diner, you see the camera focus on him, then

it switches to his perspective, and you see him looking @ the booth hes

gonna sit at...

then the camera switches back to tonys face, then it once again

switches to his perspective, and it shows him looking @ the door and

looking @ the people come in..... Everytime the door opens the Chimes

sound....... Carmela walks in, Chimes, AJ walks in Chimes, this when

Meadows parallel parking, still trying to get inside the restaurant....

at this point the camera switches back to the trucker who goes in the

bathroom......

Then it goes to a scene where meadow finally parks and starts running

in the diner....

the doors about to open, Tony looks up....

and No Chimes......................

No Music............

Everything just goes black...............

In one of the early episodes of the sopranos, tonys talking with bobby

about what it must feel like to die..

Bobby says "at the end, you probably dont hear anything, everything

just goes black"

One thing is wrong in that theory, there were chimes when Meadow walked in.

it makes sense to me- but I have 1 issue
wouldn't Tony recongize Phil Leotardo's nephew????

I too think he was killed...... (while I didn't come up with a detailed theory such as the above) I always feel like I've missed something in a previous episode. Last night after I was done fuming, I watched last weeks episode again, and in the very last scene Tony has a flashback to that convo with Bobby... (I even made a comment to DH last week about that). Then I went back and watched the end of last nights episode. I do believe that is exactly what happened, that someone (unknown to us) shot him, but only shot him.. I dont' think the whole family was killed, I think it was just Tony. Period, the end... series over.

The truck driver was the brother of someone robbed and killed by Christopher in season 2.

Cub scouts were witnesses in the train store when Bobby got shot.

Re: Sopranos ending (spoilers)

Also, when I was re-watching the final scene I did notice the timing was off.

For example:
You see Meadow run towards the door and in what seemed like milliseconds the chiming of the door. I will have to look at it again but I do not know if it was feasible (in real time) to get from where she was on the street to the door entrance. She still seemed like she had a few paces to go to enter when the door chimed. Also, you never see her hand on a doorknob. With the timing the way it was, someone could have easily walked in before her. The door chiming seemed to be simultaneous to her in mid-run; a few paces from the door. She did have a startled look on her face but that could be attributed to her lateness. Or was it from viewing a catastrophe?Chat Icon

Anybody's guess.

She didn't look startled at all.. she was running to the door and a second before they cut away from her she was actually looking down.
