Sotra Spinoff: Newborn having to stay extra in hospital

I noticed on the thread about older LO's visiting mom and new baby in the hospital a few people said their newborn had to stay extra so they stayed with them. I'm curious how you managed this? When DD was born she was in the NICU for 3 days and I was told I had to be discharged after 2. I told them I wanted to stay but my doctor told me I had to be discharged. Luckily we were able to stay till late that night and DD was discharged the next morning.

I'm just wondering, did the hospital let you stay? Did you doctor tell you ok? I would think if you just refused to leave that you'd be billed for the extra day but maybe I'm wrong. I'm trying to be prepared for next time becuase GD was part of the reason for DD's NICU stay and I'm afraid it might happen again.

Re: Sotra Spinoff: Newborn having to stay extra in hospital

I went in for my c section on a Wednesday, was supposed to go home on Saturday but since baby was in nicu I stayed til Sunday. I just told my ob I was in a lot of pain and wanted to stay another day... I had gd too... The only bad thing is that the insurance company is saying the nicu doctor was an out of service provider and they are not paying for him.... I'm fighting that, but that's another thread! Chat Icon

DS was born at 36 weeks 2 days on a Saturday afternoon. He was transferred to NICU late Saturday night. I was discharged on Monday but the hospital let me stay. It's an excellent community hospital in Northetn Westchester. They actually encouraged me to stay since they had extra rooms not being used. They didn't charge me for staying, I just had to pay for my own meals. Luckily DS was released that same Wednesday.

I went in saturday to be induced. DS was born Sunday (c/s) and was in nicu. My dr put down that I needed to stay an extra day so i could be discharged with ds. We went home Wednesday.

Thanks everyone! That's awesome that your doctor helped you out, I couldn't believe mine didn't. I thought he wasn't able to do it or he could get in trouble but now I wonder if he really could have.

I think it all depends on your insurance to be honest.

My DD was born Friday night around 7pm and the next day she was put in NICU. I had a c-section and my insurance allowed me to stay until Monday. But if need be, for medical reasons, the doctor could push it one more day. The OB did that for me and told me that I would HAVE to go home Tuesday and they couldn't push it any more. That afternoon they said my DD would have to stay another day for some tests and I had a complete breakdown in the NICU and told them I just couldn't go home without my baby and they could do the tests another day and I would bring her back. Finally after a lot of running around, the doctor for the NICU cleared her to leave and we left that night.

If my insurance didn't allow for that extra day, my doc wouldn't have pushed it.
