Speaking of Chicken Pox Vaccine- what age do they get it?

DD has a 15 month visit coming up and I know she will get MMR.
When do they normally do chicken pox?
I am not sure I won't both at the same visit- though I never really delayed a shot before.

What is the average age they give the chicken pox shot?

I'm pretty sure my DD got it at the same time as her MMR at 15 months.

See that's what I was afraid of.

I feel like that's a lot at one time.

And I am NOT one to feel that way about shots- I always follow whatever the dr says.

If it makes you feel any better, my DD did fine with getting them all at once. She didn't really have much of a reaction to either. I think she had a very low grade fever a few days after but it didn't even last a day. Honestly, she really was fine after the shots. Chat Icon

Thanks! DD has never had any reactions to any shots- but I am a bit nervous about MMR- I feel like it's a "big" one - though that could just be false perception because of all the hype over that one in the past....
Then getting chicken pox at the same time- just worried me a bit.

I am sure she will be fine though-just me being, well, a NervousNell!! Chat Icon

Chat Icon Chat Icon She will be okay!! Chat Icon I was a little nervous too back when my DD got the MMR because it was the height of the craziness over the autism link and all of that but after speaking with my ped I felt very comfortable giving her the shot. I really trusted what he said. With the chicken pox shot, I actually didn't even think about it being given the same time. I guess it was a lot of shots but like I said, she was okay.

Do what makes you comfortable. If your ped is okay with it ask to being her back a few months later for the chicken pox vaccine. I'm sure it wouldn't be too much of a problem. Chat Icon

DS was suppose to get both the MMR and Chicken Pox at his 12 month visit.

I made them break it up because I felt it was too many at once - so he only got the MMR at that visit.

He is going back in 2 weeks for the Chicken Pox. He gets his boosters for Hepatitis at his 15 month.

My Ped offers it at 12 months together with the MMR. I believe the recommended age is 12-15 months for both the chicken pox vaccine and the MMR. Normally given together. Since they're both live vaccines, my Ped's office was ok with us giving them separately. When you don't give two live vaccines together, the CDC recommends that you wait 4 weeks between live shots so keep that in mind.

I also wonder what my insurance company will think of me having to have another office visit if I break them up.
That might be an issue too...

Re: Speaking of Chicken Pox Vaccine- what age do they get it?

My DD just had her 15 months appt on Friday and got the MMR and chicken pox vaccines plus the flu shot.

My doctor gave me the option to break them up but when I asked if there was any benefit to doing so, he said no so I just figured I would get them all over at once.

My DD has been fine; no reaction yet. I know a reaction to MMR can show up a week later though.

I don't know if it's considered a benefit, but the CDC website shows the chances of a reaction after getting the MMR and Chicken Pox vaccine together are much higher than if they get them separately. Same with the chances of febrile seizures.

I broke up another shot -- you are allowed a certain number of visits within the first year ( I dont remember the number ). My insurance company allowed one "extra" visit - based on when my ped wanted to see us

So basically, I got a freebie LOL

DD got the MMR and Chicken Pox at her 12 month -- I would split them b/c I know DD was a nightmare after the MMR! (I know it was the MMR b/c it was ten days later not right away)

Emmy did fine too! She had a harder time with her 6month shots then her 12m and 15m shots! She was a little sluggish and wanted to cuddle more, and maybe a few degrees warmer, but nothing drastic. Lots of snacks, juice, motrin and cuddles and she was fine in 2 days. Like I said the 6m ones wiped her out for almost a week w/diarreha and being very very fatiged

Re: Speaking of Chicken Pox Vaccine- what age do they get it?

DS just got the Chicken Pox vaccine this weekend and he's exactly the same age as your DD. He did not get the MMR. We're putting that off until 18 months.

My ped is the most reasonable ped in the universe... I took HIS advice and he suggested putting it off. But to be fair, I didn't give my DD the MMR and Chicken Pox together either, and she's always been a lot more resilient than my DS (he usually has a reaction, she never has).

I see nothing wrong with putting the Chicken Pox off for a month just so you can be sure that she's not reacting to the MMR. Since many kids do tend to have a reaction, I'm sure your ped will be understanding.
