Re: Spin-off to the Hillary/ Obama thread....
Posted by Beth1210 I don't get why race comes up as a comparision to republicans and democrats? I don't see the connection
its the point.. that making generalizations about a GROUP of people.. whatever group that may be.. is ignorant.. and while it wouldnt be acceptable in any other arena, i wonder why it IS acceptable here. that's the connection.

Character debates. People can't debate issues when they can't figure out what their Party's achievements are, so they tend to go after character.

nasty things were said about Hillary also- I can't see getting so offended over people not agreeing with you
I'm not offended over people not agreeing with me. Really, i think your missing my point. I don't care if people say things about Hillary, i dont care if they says things about Bush, i don't care if they say things about any of the candidates... its the attacks at the PARTY that are offensive. Bingo!!!!!

I don;t think it's about the people. It's about the party. It's not individual at all. I don't think anyone who says negative things about republicans woud ever discriminate against someone personally for being a republican, or is directing those comments at their next door neighbor for example.

Re: Spin-off to the Hillary/ Obama thread....
While I know there are a few people on this site that are very involved and educated about politics, I go back to a statement I've made several times here:
Most people don't know what they are talking about when it comes to debating the issues and the politicians.
A lot of it depends on what news channel you watch or what your close friends/family tell you about.
So it becomes easy to make sweeping generalizations and "bandwagon bash".
Tomorrow I will be endlessly frustrated with the amount of people at work who criticize Bush and the state of the union and when I ask them if they ACTUALLY watched it, they will say No.
You can't complain about what you aren't informed about in my book.
While I'm not a Bush fan, I will still watch to make an informed opinion based on MY interpretations, not those of Fox News or CNN or whatever "expert" they have spinning the words one way or another.

Re: Spin-off to the Hillary/ Obama thread....
Honestly, in all of the political debates I've been involved in on this site, the only offesnsiove comments I ever saw were during the Sean bell shootng discussion a police officer was calling "liberals" all kinds of names.
For me, no, I don't like what the republican party stands for, but I've never taken it to a personal level

We saw the power of spin and selective journalism today in the thread about the 3 year and parents who were kicked off the plane

Absolutely!! I read the first story and was outraged.
Read the second one and though, "Oh, that makes sense."

My whole family are single issue republican voters (anti-abortion). Of course I love them. I get REALLY frustrated with them. Voting against killing in abortion but voting for killing in the war, the death penalty, etc.... but my disalike of the repiblicn machine doesn;t extend to individuals

the republicans do a great job of getting out the single issue voters
anti-gay marriage, NRA, abortion- I wonder what the 2008 message will be?
see I can say something nice

it's so true. But I think it's sad that there are people who are single issue voters. A lot of people voted for dems as single issue (anti-war) voters. The republicans are better at te propaganda machine, but it makes me sad that people are so apthetic. I mean not every issue is going to be important to every person (for example, stance on abortion means nothing to me, except in how it reflects their ideas on other issues like rights for women and access to birth control) but people should ahve some sense of the WHOLE they're voting for.

Re: Spin-off to the Hillary/ Obama thread....
I think people are VERY upset with Bush overall, as well as his inner administration (Cheney, Rice et al). So while it's not fair, the Republican party gets a bad rep for awhile. Don't worry--if the Dems win in '08, something wil go wrong (it's inevitable) and everyone will be upset with them again.
I agree, you can't judge an entire party by one person, but people tend to do it.

It's not just one person. For a long, long time the republican party and many republican leaders stood behind bush as he made mistake after mistake

I agree with this and it is the main reason I stay out of political debates on the site.
I am not a registered Republican or Democrat. I try to read up on candidates and vote for individuals - their qualifications and their voting records and how that lines up with what I believe. I think both parties have a lot of overhaul to do.
ETA - I didn't read the other thread

Re: Spin-off to the Hillary/ Obama thread....
I'll admit to making cracks about Republicans, just like I make cracks about celebs- it's easy to do and it doesn't take a lot to amuse me. BUT the media contributes a lot IMO- it seems to me that when the occasional random Republican says/does something stupid, the media's all over it. I know the names of Republicans who've been indicted, cheated on spouses, etc. but when they do good you just don't hear as much.

And yet the beauty of it is, educated and informed or not, we are all entitled to an opinion and if we are a citizen and 18 y/o, we can vote!
I think political parties tend to get "lumped" together, both Republican and Democrat, because they tend to do things as a party. They share a platform, vote in blocks, choose the same issues to hightlight, etc. I'm not saying it is right or wrong, just explaining the generalization. When I hear the term Dem or Republican in that context though, I tend to think the reference is to "professional" politicians like Senators, Congressmen and women, etc.

Why is it okay for people to make such nasty comments about Republicans, and it's considered acceptable?
Just curious

Re: Spin-off to the Hillary/ Obama thread....
I just re-read the thread and didnt find any horrible posts. Some people said the thought of Hillary as president made them nauseous - and someone wrote something similar about Republicans - something like they leave a bad taste in her mouth.
I've heard a lot worse about both parties.
