How do you know when to count them as words? It sounds like most of these words weren't associated with the object/person until later.
DS babbles and says dada baba as part of the babbling, but i never considered it words.
Until they say it with a purpose, it's not a real word. DS has been babbling mama, baba, nana, dada, etc for a really long time. Most things were dada though. Between 12 and 13 months, he has started to say mama more when looking at me. I consider that his first real word b/c he says mama and looks at me or says it when he wants me. He has also been saying uh oh since 12 months, but doesn't say it in the right context. Everything else is babbling right now.

see, I'm so worried and not sure if I should be. Liam doesn't say words, he is still babbling mostly (does say dada-50% towards DH). He doesn't stop babbling but isn't saying words yet.
Should I be concerned? He's 1 year old. We go tomorrow for his 1 year visit and I'll ask the Ped.
Thanks!!
Jake is the same and I didn't give it a 2nd thought until I just read this post!
He says dada all the time, and just like your DS, not always directed towards DH, but he loves to babble. He is big with hand gestures - clapping, pointing, waving, reaching.
I have been trying to get him to say Mama and Hi. Sometimes I hear Hi, but I'm not sure that is actually it.

Re: spinoff-- when did your DC say their first word, and what was it?
dada around 6months. She says it all the time and knows what it means.
She said mama once at around 9 months! Hasn't said it since.
This month she mimicked "Grandpa" but said "papo"
She has said "piper" more than once! Of course, it doesn't sound like piper. I would say around 11 months.

Re: spinoff-- when did your DC say their first word, and what was it?
I don't consider dada, mama, baba to be real words until they are said to denote meaning for something (pointing at me and saying "mama").
Madelyn's first true word was "baba" for bottle. She was 13 months old and said it anytime she saw her bottle.
Eliza's first word was "ball". She just started saying it about 2 weeks ago. She yells it everytimg she sees something that even remotely looks like a ball (ball, balloon, the dog's chew toy).

Re: spinoff-- when did your DC say their first word, and what was it?
DS first real word was "brat" My SIL used to always refer to him as brat, she'd say "hi brat" or "come here brat" and one day he said it back to her lol. I missed it b/c I was at work but later on that day he said it again. Before that there was alot of mama, dada but I didn't really consider it a his first words b/c he was babbling.

My son was babbling DaDa very early at around 5.5 months, and then babbling MaMa around 6.5 months! AT 11.5 Months, still no real words either! He babbles all day long, and I swear I've heard him say hi, and hot but not sure since I I only heard it the one time! Every baby is different!

Re: spinoff-- when did your DC say their first word, and what was it?
For those who are worrying- as long as your baby is BABBLING (any consonant vowel combinations) they are fine. For those who say it sounds like their LO is "talking in another language" that is the babbling that occurs right before true speech begins. They are imitating the various intonations and speech patterns they hear every day.

Re: spinoff-- when did your DC say their first word, and what was it?
DD's first word was "cat" at about 7 months. She said the usualy words prior to that, but "cat" was the first time she actually seemed to put a word to the object.
DS is 9 months & he's still just doing his babbles (mama, dada, baba, etc), no real words yet. He does always direct "mama" at me now though.

Re: spinoff-- when did your DC say their first word, and what was it?
mama -- 71/2 months. At almost 11 months, she doesnt say much else, just dada here and there, no (sort of -- its more like nananana) elmo (i think), and that's it. Mama is constant though all day, every minute I am with her. It is very cute.
At 7 months, I didn't think mam meant anything either, but now it definitely does -- she looks at me point blank and says it clear as a bell!
