Spinoff on Preschool...if your child is in daycare
Not sure how to start off so let me go this way...
Lucas is in daycare far from our home. They have a very academic program which is great and as the children get older they move to different rooms geared towards the appropriate development needs.
So....would/have you taken your daycare child to a preschool program or have you made use of the daycare program?
What age do they start pre-school?
How do you find preschools?

Re: Spinoff on Preschool...if your child is in daycare
When Christopher was in daycare it was similar to Lucas' and we planned to just have him stay in the daycare until Pre-K.
As for finding preschools, I'm clueless, but I'd like to put C3 in next fall

Re: Spinoff on Preschool...if your child is in daycare
Ds gos to daycare 1 day a week now, next year he will go 3 days (he will be a little over 2 at that point). I wil prob keep him in the same daycare next year (if i like his teacher/class) since he will still be young and i do like the place. Then the following year when he's 3, i will be putting him into a different daycare/preschool that i know is awesome for academics, etc. Its more $$ but i dont care b/c the place is great and more like a "preschool".

Re: Spinoff on Preschool...if your child is in daycare
I'm in the opposite boat. DS is now not in any kind of program, because I only work part time. But next year I would like him to be in preschool. I even know which one I would like to send him to. My problem is the hours. All preschool programs are either 8-11 or 9-12. To be honest, I'm home during that time and I work in the afternoons, so it seems weird to have him in school at that time. In a perfect world I would have him in a preschool program from 2:30-5:30, so that I could drop off before work and DH cold pick up after work. Because of that, I may have to put him in some sort of daycare program where I can make my own hours.

Re: Spinoff on Preschool...if your child is in daycare
I am leaning towards keeping Lucas in his daycare up until kindergarten because so far I have to say that he has excelled there. I like the programs and the teachers. He's there full-time/5 days a week.
My only concern was that he's not with the kids he would be in school with....we live further away from his daycare. I guess I am worried that all the kids in kindergarten will know each other but Lucas won't. Then again...when I read this outloud it does sound a little silly. I mean, I can't imagine that every child in that kindergarten class will have been in the same preschool together.
Preschool is such a short time each day...I work and I can't imagine pulling it off. Maybe I just answered my own question

Nicole, I don't know about your area but where I am, lots of preschools had an afternoon program along with some flex hours...including Tutor Time and Kiddie Academy. DD goes to an afternoon program because she sleeps til 8.

I woldn't worry about this. First of all if the program is good, it is perfect because as a working parent, you need the after care hours. A typical pre-school is only a few hours a day. PLUS I doubt my DD will be in school with any of her classmates even though my daycare is 10 minutes from my home as we are in Sachem which is so huge anyway. Plus who wouldn't want to be Lucas' friend.

Re: Spinoff on Preschool...if your child is in daycare
We are struggling with this now. TT has a program like you mentioned where they move up etc.
However, there is a very well known preschool in my area which is more educational focused than TT is (at least this is what i heard)
I found out about the preschool from other moms in the area. I am going to their open house in January
the bad thing is if I take Chris there then the 2 kids will be in different places

Re: Spinoff on Preschool...if your child is in daycare
I'm happy with where DD is for the moment but it's only a daycare and I don't think she's getting anything out of it beyond interaction with other children.
But I would like to hear more about this very well known preschool that Jen mentioned I know nothing about...

Jessee - I have looked at the Montessori program in Levittown (actually just called, didn't tour) They sent me some info, but their hours are really the pits - 9 - 3 - I really would like Megan to go their but not sure how we will swing the hours.

I live in White Plains. In the Spring I will have to start looking in to all of my options. Another reason the afternoon is better is because we're TTC. Right now my mom and MIL watch DS 2 afternoons a week each. I figured it would be much easier for them to just watch a baby while DS is in school.

Re: Spinoff on Preschool...if your child is in daycare
I didn't think there was a difference...I though all daycares were preschools with their academic programs, etc. But I guess all schools are different.
When Michael turns two next September we are putting him in a Montessori school which he will attend through Kindergarted (for transition purposes).
ETA: The Montessori school that I am looking at (in NYC) has hours 8:30am-5:30pm, which includes daycare and an educational program.

I am going to keep Thomas in daycare until he starts kindergarten. I feel it's the best of both worlds. Pre-school environment and education and day care.
Our day care is about 8 minutes from our home, but is in a different school district and the children come from all areas near and far. I understand your concern, but even if Lucas went to day care or pre school closer to your home, he still may not go to kindergarten with any of his classmates.

Re: Spinoff on Preschool...if your child is in daycare
our daycare center is very very insistent on the fact that they are NOT a daycare, but rather a full-day preschool (starting at 6 weeks old ). They have an academics through play program that we're thrilled with. We use one very close to home, but most of the kids will not go to her kindergarten (they don't live in our immediate neighborhood). I think that our daycare program probably surpasses many preschools that only offer two 2 1/2 hour days a week. DD is learning/playing all day, every day. I definitely credit them with her huge vocabulary & speaking abilities.
If you work, how would you switch to a preschool program? It sounds like your daycare is a preschool really, which is great!

DS attends daycare 2 days a week and the center he attends is very much like what you mentioned above. the DS goes to daycare near my parents house, since in case of emergency, they are 2 minutes away. The center has pre-k and it's a very structured program. The more I speak with people, the more I hear that most daycares have a preschool setting.

Re: Spinoff on Preschool...if your child is in daycare
DH and I haven't discussed it but we are very happy with our daycare and will probably keep her there for pre-school. There are a few pre-schools near me but from what I hear they are . So unless I feel she is not learning where she is, she'll stay put. They seem to have a great program from what I have seen and heard when I am there.

I agree - love the teachers there and the kids all seem very happy - Got to love Ms. Lisa too - I don't think I've ever met a more positive person!

Not that we have given it much thought, but we would probably lean toward keeping Gavin in TT for the reasons you mentioned Ang, and because the hours buy us a little more time before we get hit with school hours........which terrifies me......

Bella is in daycare and when they turn 3 they move over to the "school side" They run it like a pre-school and have art, music, and gym class. I feel like Bella gets even more out of it because she is there for longer periods of time.

Our daycare is like a school as well. its home daycare and she teaches all of the children the same thing. They have a curriculum during the day. I will keep him there until Pre-K.

ITA, as our children are in the same class.
The academic program at their school, IMO is the best around. The 4yr old class is already reading in NOVEMBER. The program is geared for children to leave reading on a 1st-2nd grade reading level.
Their are not many pre-ks around that compare- IMO.
Check out their academic program for 3's and 4's, and compare it to some others around you and take it from there
