Spinoff to daughter living in car--is this scenario different?
a friend of mine who is in his 40s has a daughter who is in her 20s (ages are approximate). I guess because I know him now and totally respect him, I can respect what he did.
I did not know him when we were younger but this is what he told me:
He was dating a girl when he was in his late teens or maybe early 20s. She got pregnant. Her father immediately forbade his daughter from seeing him. My friend's home life was not the greatest and he had a falling out with his mom. He had a job but not enough $$ for a place. He was able to afford food and I think he put a few $ away for upcoming expenses and that was it. He wanted to be with this girl. She continued to live with her dad. He lived in his car and usually kept it parked somewhere up the block from his girlfriend's house. She would try to see him when she could, but being pregnant, she did not move into the car with him. I think he showered at friends' houses. In the end, they never got married but he has always been a father to their daughter. He later married and has more children. I felt that his determination to see his girlfriend and support her however he could was admirable. I do not think that any neighbors complained, probably because he took the car to work and may have changed his spot sometimes. Can you see why I respect him for what he did?

I can see why he did what he did, but as a taxpaying resident, I wouldn't want a homeless person sleeping in a car on my block, whatever the situation. Maybe that's harsh, but I pay a lot in taxes to have a decent neighborhood, and having homeless people hanging around is not the type of neighborhood I want to live in. And he was homeless.

You have a good point and I agree to an extent. One part of me says this was 20 something years ago and hearing the story now, there is this sweetness to it.
At the same time, it appeared that he never slept in the same area and that the car wasn't there all day. Yes, he was homeless but he was still proactive in working and being a part of their lives, kwim? But I do see your point.

I am not saying that the neighbors would have been wrong to complain but I am saying that his heart was in the right place.
