Posted by Jennie0898 Question: Do you ever take your cat out of the carrier while en route?
I am REQUIRED to take him out and walk through the metal detector with him & put the carrier through the x-ray.
He IS allowed out in the public parts of the airport, but I don't want all those people touching him. He might catch something from them
Again, I don't make the rules, he IS PERMITTED to be in the airport, so don't get on me about the food shops in terminals! I don't usually take him out of his carrier for his safety and well being, though.
No, I don't mean in the airport, I mean in the plane itself when you're in the air.
Same thing here-my dog is out when in the airport. And I do have to take her into the ladies room to go to the bathroom on her pee pee pads if I should have a connecting flight (never had anyone complain- most comment on how cute she is). But while enroute she stays in her carrier- I actually think shes more comfortable in there. She has her blankets and snacks.

I have an 80lb Pitbull and a 4lb chihuahua and yes I do think there is a difference between bringing in your big dog to the store vs. small dog. And to me the difference is my 80lb pitbull doesn't fit in a doggie bag or under my arm, she'd have to walk through the store whereas my chihuahua fits into her bag/my arms and isn't walking around, or touching anything in the store. She can't go up to strangers who might be afraid of dogs, she can't lick the merchandise or the customers.
Lemme ask you though- do you understand why you are seen as inconsiderate of others?
Regardless of whether you are holding your dog or not- many people see it as unsanitary and most stores have a "No Pet" policy. Just because some store employees may not enforce it doesn't mean the policy isn't there......
I guess I get the idea from your posts that you feel as though the rules, or at the very least, basic etiquette just don't apply to you
You can feel I'm inconsiderate- thats fine, we obviously do not see eye to eye on this! If theres a no pet policy at a particular store then I do not take her in there.

I look at it this way...
If you could bring in a small dog then any ol small animal is OK...we wouldnt want to discriminate right...???
so if small dogs are ok then it's OK to bring in pet ferrets, pet rats, guina pigs etc....
OK, so I have a story about this... I took my cat to the vet. He had a cold. They said to put him in the bathroom with a humidifier to help break up his cold. There is a walmart right by my vet. I have seen people in there with their small dogs every time I have been in there. I called them from my car and asked "Can I bring my small dog in there?" The guy put me on hold, came back and said YES. I walked in and they said "Oh, you can't come in with that..." It's DISCRIMINATION I tell ya!!!
That totally was discrimination and I would have been PIZZED!!!
Nahh... it's OK, I don't think the DOGS should have been permitted anymore than my cat! I was just being lazy that I didn't want to drive all the way home and then back to the store after the vet

Re: Spinoff to Dogs in Stores
I've brought my 15 lb. shih tzu onto the plane with me a few times.
It is required by security that I take her out while I hold her and walk through the metal detector. I am also allowed to have her walk on a leash in the airpot. For the ENTIRE flight with no exceptions, she remains in her carrier, under the seat. I am not allowed to take her out, and I leave her in there. She doesn't make a peep. Once we're out of the airport and I pop her out of the bag, I ALWAYS have people come up to me and say they had no idea that a dog was in there.
Sometimes I HAVE to take her on the plane with me.. I really have no choice!
I don't bring her into restaurants, supermarkets, stores, etc. with the exception of petco and on a recent trip to San Francisco where we took her to many more places since they were explicitly dog-friendly.

Ok, but I didn't ask you if you've ever had a problem with bringing your dog to the store. I asked specific questions about others with allergies, fears of dogs and what you do when the dog needs to relieve itself, none of which have you answered.
If you could address the questions I've posed I'd appreciate it as I have no doubt you've never run into any problems with bringing your dog to a store or other public place.
I SAID I never came across anyone with a fear of my dog! I have also never come across anyone allergic to my dog. As far as her having to relieve herself- she goes out before we leave. She would never pee in my arms or in her carrier. I did have an instance where she was crying in her carrier, so I took her outside where she peed and then I went back inside and continued my shopping- wasn't a big deal.

Where I was living the past 2 years (Bellas only 3), it is also very pet friendly!! everywhere we go the stores have snacks to give out to dogs, including the pharmacy, bank, and some stores in the mall. they also have dog water fountains throughout certain stretches of sidewalk down the city

....or a cat.
I can answer it on the plane issue, though. My cat can be placed in a carrier under the seat in front of me. That's why I can fly with my cat. Your pet can't be over 20 pounds & has to be able to comfortably fit in carrier that goes under the seat in front of you.
I think the difference here is that your cat is in a carrier that fits under a seat. Sounds to me that these people with dogs on a plane aren't even confining them to a carrier.
That just doesn't seem right to me.
To answer the plane issue, they will not take off unless the dog is under the seat, so it is not a choice. As far as the in the store issue I can see that my 4 lb chihuahua fits in a bag and is not in direct contact with anyone or the food. To be honest my 10 month old son makes more of a mess. But at any rate I do not bring any of them into any indoor stores other than ones that allow dogs. I do however bring them sometimes if I am going to an open-air or outdoor market.

That's what I thought... again, I have much less of an issue with a pet being on a plane while in a carrier. Honestly, I really don't have an issue then.
I totally understand that times come up and you need to travel with your pet (specifically for you, a cat) and when this comes up I really don't see a problem with them hanging out in their carrier for the flight.

Re: Spinoff to Dogs in Stores
Posted by Jennie0898 I asked specific questions about others with allergies, fears of dogs and what you do when the dog needs to relieve itself.
Regarding the allergy issue, I have allergies to certain perfumes...bad ones, but I do not go up to people who wear cheap perfumes and ask them to leave b/c it affects my allergies. If I know I am going to be in a confined place where there might be an issue, I take precautions or pre-medicate. I think if someone has severe enough allergies they would do the same, or ask any airline to be alerted if there are any on-board animals on that flight. Simple. I don't feel like I am entitled to change someone else's life b/c I have a problem, KWIM?
If someone is afraid of my dog(s) I simply walk away from them. I don't want anyone getting upset nor do I want my dogs to get all riled up if someone freaks.
My dog is trained & can hold it if we are out & about. Plus I carry dog waste bags with me, so if he has to go, I find a spot to let him go & then clean it up. Of course I only allow him to go outside. I don't want people to think that I let him go inside & clean it
Having said all of that, if anything is against the law or against health codes, than everything else is irrelevant IMO. Mind you I only take my dogs into stores where it is allowed, or to open-air markets, and since they are on the sidewalk there is a greater chance of people just walking with their dogs.
I think people on LI have a different view since many of us have backyards & walk our dogs in the yard or around our residential blocks. When I am in the city you cannot walk 2 steps without someone walking their dog(s), so it is common to see many people walking their dogs & running errands with them.

When I am in the city you cannot walk 2 steps without someone walking their dog(s), so it is common to see many people walking their dogs & running errands with them.
And maybe this is the crux of the issue. It's true most LI'ers do have yards where they can let their dogs roam free so maybe it is almost a foreign concept for a lot of us.
I agree that in the city it is very common to see people walking their dogs on the street but to me that's a necessity - their dogs need to go out for exercise and to relieve themselves but is it necessary to bring em into a D'agastino?

I guess you are this type of person who always going to be right regardless.
Your little doggie is perfect. Does not bark, can go to stores with you, etc...
The bottom line, you have no regards for anyone else. That's what it comes down too. You just do as you please.

Well my dog doesn't bark (if she does, I know something is wrong because she really never does), and I do bring her to store when its allowed! I don't see that as doing whatever I please- its allowed!! I don't bring her to the supermarket or restaurants- never had- just because i defended someone who did and really don;t see the big deal in it, doesn't mean I've done it myself.
I never said my dog or I were perfect
