SPINOFF to More Formula Questions..Advice Needed PLEASE
Ok, my 5 week old is suffering from TERRIBLE REFLUX. We are now on our 4th formula called NEOCATE. It ONLY comes in POWDER (I had used liquid in the past). Its a fortune as its $50 a can which last for 2 and 1/2 days. We just got our insurance to approve it, thankfully.
The directions say warm or cool sterile water. What exactly does that mean to you??? I called customer service and she said boil the water, then let it stand for 5 mins before puring it in to the already made up bottle with the powder. Do you think only 5 mins after boil is too hot and powder may disinigrate?
Alot of you ladies in the previous post on formula questions said you use bottled water. CAN I? I thought I had to boil my water. Am I asking a dumb question here (sorry--lack of experience). Is bottled water fine to use cold with the formula and then just warm the bottles when its time to eat?
This reflux issue is really bringing us down. My Dr (she is conservative) won't put Chloe on MEDS yet for it..believes in time it will get better but the end seems so far for us. My por baby has such gas. I am trying Mylicon Gas Drops(thankfully don't have the lot # that was recalled today) but they barely work. I go through a zioolion bibs, clothes, burpies...its nuts! She spits up an hour or more afte she has eaten....
Thanks for listening and please, any answers about the formula and water is appreciated!

I'm thinking that maybe they meant pouring it in after a minimum of 5 minutes after boiling maybe ? I wouldn't think it would matter how long you let the water stand for after it boiled...We used powdered formula ( Similac) with my DS and his ped told us filtered water from the fridge door was fine...Maybe ask your ped what he/she reccomends, it seems they all have their own think KWIM ? You are definately not asking dumb questions at all, all doctors advise differently so thats probably why so many of the answers to the posts are confusing...its frusturating ! Good Luck

ok, so the official directions from the hospital was 'boil the water', but I never did it and we've had no problems.
I believe boiling the water is to kill off any possible trace levels of pathogens that may contaminate the water supply (like cholera). It doesn't have to be sterile when you use it, so you can let it cool down on the countertop prior to using

I always got different answers when I asked the question on whether I have to boil the water, or use filtered or use bottled.
We used to boil the water in the AM, let it cool and then pour it into a container for just that purpose. It was way too much trouble. Now we use filtered tap water.
I hope DC is better with this formula. .

I'm surprised that your ped didn't suggest putting rice cereal in the bottle.....
a lot of doctors (including my DD's) did that b/c he didn't want to do rice either.
is there another reason for the neocate?

Try asking your doctor about Mylanta. DD's Ped. and Gastro have her using it (she has since about 6weeks old). It has helped tremendously for the gas and the tummy! Would your doctor send you to a Pediatric Gastro? DD has gotten much better on her own. We saw big improvements when we were given the OK to add oatmeal cereal to her bottles in the am and pm. Be your LOs advocate and speak up if you need to. Don't let the doctor have all the power if you feel something isn't right!
