Re: spinoff to my own post - Public or Private?
Public. For a few reasons....
1. I think education is what you make of it, and the parents have just as much to do with the education a child recieves as the teachers/district.
2. We're not exceptionally religious, so I'm not concerned with that.
3. I'm a public school teacher, so I feel it would be hypocritical of me to send my children to private.
4. I pay taxes that go to the school, so I might as well get something out of it!

Re: spinoff to my own post - Public or Private?
as of now, public. we live in a terrific district...straight through to HS.
a different DH...I would probably pull for Catholic. My family is big into catholic education...DH feels its a waste of money, doesn't trust priests, wants him to have school friends in our neighborhood.

Not sure yet. I'm in Sachem, too (wow! A lot of us here!) and I've heard very mixed things about the school district when it gets to the upper levels. Three people who went there or taught in the high school told me it's awful. I don't want to believe it because I like it here and can't afford private school.
I went to Sachem and got a great education. What year(s) did these people graduate? My cousins are there now (in HS) and doing very well as well.

We aren't homeowners yet but we will be buying within a year or so. I'd simply NEVER buy a home in an area where the public schools are sub par. We are also not religious enough to justify Yeshiva for her. Abby will be attending public schools.

Re: spinoff to my own post - Public or Private?
I chose the neighborhood where I bought my house based in good part on the type of public school system they had and how well the community supported that school system.
They attend public school in the district and I am more than pleased. If I thought for one second they would get a better education or more out of a private school I would srape together every dime to make it happen... but it's simply not necessary.

My DD will be going to a Montessori Charter school. Not sure if you have charter schools in NY but they're pretty popular out here. They're public but not a mainstream school. The nice thing is no tuition.

Re: spinoff to my own post - Public or Private?
just as my parents did, we'll make sure we live in a decent school district when the time comes...
I can't envision us ever having the budget that would permit DS to attend private school

I'm a bit old fashioned though and am SERIOUSLY concerned with the way todays kids are growing up, their influences etc. and while yes they will be influenced no matter what school, I do think a private or catholic school will focus more on education and well theres a bunch of reasons I can name.
I don't know that this really has anything to do with a public vs. private education though. My SILs go to private Catholic school and they are the perfect example of what most people would say have bad influnences. And they always have. I actually think they are WORSE when it comes to "NEEDING" the best of everything. My SILs cousin has a PORSCHE CAYENNE at 17 years old.
Their brother goes to public school (for now) and he doesn't have the same pressures they do...at all.
Well that sounds like it is also what a parent teaches their child....Pressures will be everywhere but its a parents role to teach a child what is truely valuable in life....and might have nothing to do with the school.....girls are more pressured period no matter where they attend school....thats a known fact....
My comment was not that Private school is not about class and privilege though, its about a different type of learning envirnoment . But the point I was making was my perception is public schools appear to have less authority, more media influence, less rules and all about structure .
My 3 nephews who are brothers and go to private catholic school are less media filled then their cousins who are 1-2 yrs apart from them. They dont trade bakugan( sp? ) , or cards etc, b/c the schools limits that activity severly....they dont know pop songs b/c ipods are not allowed in school, nor are cell phones...and they have the teacher:child ratio available to enforce these rules. Thats the type of thing I was referring to.

We are on the fence. The public school is free, gets good reports and is a 5 min drive from our house.
Public school is not free.... My taxes prove it!

Re: spinoff to my own post - Public or Private?
We have great schools in my town. It is one of the reasons we chose to live here. We have lived here for over 10 years and it will be another 4-5 years before my son is in school. I think we have paid for his education already.

I agree - we are in Middle Country schhol district - and while it is not GREAT we are still going to send our children there. That is unless we moved OOS...
