No way in he!! I would ever move back to L.I.
Is Jersey a lot cheaper than Long Island? My grandparents had a summer home in Cape May that my mother inherited, we have been going there my whole life but as far as real estate prices, I have NO clue. Her family is from Philly and they all moved out of Philly to Central Jersey which from what I hear is pretty cheap but you said you were in North Jersey... is it a lot cheaper than Long Island? I always thought that maybe it was the same because of the proximity to the city.

East Northport I grew up here. Love it!
Great school district, cute town village, lots of shopping close by. Parkway is about 10 mins. from me (I'm on the Commack border).

we're moving to Central NJ. You can get a lot more for your money. The houses are still pricey depending on what you're looking at, but you get a lot more. A lot more land too. We wanted more land, but didn't want to move further out east on the island so we looked in NJ Plus, I know the area b/c I grew up there

Definately not where I live. Maybe in parts central and south it's cheaper. But where I am we have some of the highest taxes in the state.
I've been living in Jersey since '99 and I find everything to be much more convienent here than L.I. Easier to get into the city, and eaiser just to get places in general.

BAY RIDGE BROOKLYN
Tons of parks, things to do with the kiddies TOns of NYC attractions Close to great daycare, schools and pediatrician LOVE my commute to NYC LOVE being able to stroll around the hood
downfall is that we bought a condo and I dont think we could afford a house here
Im in bayridge too and love all those things except my commute bc the R to the N then all the way to 57th street is LONG!!! and crowded, plus we rent our house and we really want to buy within a year or so!!!

I love where we live, we are close to lots of little stores and the parkways but we are tucked away on a quiet street with tons of kids. We have great neighbors, good schools and still have somewhat of a small town feel.
exactly ditto!

I live in Sayville and I honestly don't think I could be happier with my choice.
It's pretty solidly middle class area with a lot of friendly folks. It's very family friendly, with lots of events and activities for all ages - ranging from festivals, feasts, Family Fridays (music and kids shows), Free Yoga, etc.. The Miracle on Main Street Tree lighting and community caroling is great fun and SummerFest and Seafood Fest are good times.
It has a good core - a solid and lovely little main street with shop owners who get to know their clients and which makes shopping locally a priority. I don't need to 'escape' for a fun day - we stroll down Main, stop for an ice - have a slice or go to a nicer restaurant - drop into the Four Star for some knick knacks, play with the nostalgia toys in the Toy Store, Listen to the street musicians who sometimes hang out by Starbucks - or play at La Tavola during Happy Hour.
The schools are great and are well supported by the family and the community as a whole.
We have a beautiful little marina park and no matter where you live you are pretty much walking distance from the Bay and close to the Fire Island Ferries.
It's big enough that not everyone is in your business, but small enough that a stroll through town will undoubtedly lead you to a few friendly conversations and lots of friendly waves and greetings.
I honestly love it here and hope to stay for a long time!
I couldn't have said it better! I love it here! :)

Re: Spinoff to my unhappy where you live post, where do all you happy people live?
Downtown Manhattan (Lower East Side)
Love it. I grew up here. Compared to other areas in Manhattan it's very affordable. I have a 2 bedroom coop (1000 square feet) so it's a decent size.
2 bedroom coops go for $500-600K. Maintenance under $800 so its pretty affordable compared to other areas in Manhattan.
Lots of families with kids DDs age, 24 hour security, on site 24 hour gym, great playroom in our buildings plus lots of parks, close to everything, easy access. Great Charter schools (Nest is one of them) as well as public schools (Shuang Wen blue ribbon school plus others). I can walk to the Seaport, West Village, East Village, 14th Street. We have great fairs with vendors who sell fresh veggies and fruits, great restaurants, movie theatres, etc.
I have debated about moving to suburbia but the commute kills me. I'm so used to walking home from work or taking a 5 minute cab ride to and from work...I don't think I can used to living in the suburbs but who knows when our family expands how I'll feel.

We live in Milwaukee, WI
Great place to raise a family. Especially the neighborhood we live in because there are a lot of cops and teachers since they have to live in Milwaukee county. Just have to get past the super-bad winters!

Re: Spinoff to my unhappy where you live post, where do all you happy people live?
I love, love, love my area and I love the school my kids are in (they are in a Catholic school in town). While I don't love my house, we've decided to stay put since we are very happy with the kids school and everything the town offers. If we do move, it will just be to a bigger house in the same area.

Re: Spinoff to my unhappy where you live post, where do all you happy people live?
I live in Babylon Village and love it here. It has Argyle park, main street shopping and restaurants, a really nice village pool and beach, small close knit community and schools. I live right on the water, there's a canal in my yard and the bay down the street. I can walk to a little park and marina right around the corner.
When it's nice out I walk to the deli around the block to get a bagel and sit by the bay while I eat. Then Jack and I go to play at the park and take a walk around to look at the boats. I love that I can do all of that without leaving my neighborhood.
My husband commutes to the city and the train station is only a few minute drive. It's the first stop, so there's always a seat in the morning. Lots of express trains so it's about an hour ride.
