Re: Spinoff to my unhappy where you live post, where do all you happy people live?
East Hampton
Love it. I love my neighborhood. I live next to some great people. Quite a few families live on our block, which is nice. When you walk your dog or take your child for a walk, people say hello to each other. It's also a quiet neighborhood, which is nice, especially since there is minimal traffic driving up and down the road.

I live in Sayville and I honestly don't think I could be happier with my choice.
It's pretty solidly middle class area with a lot of friendly folks. It's very family friendly, with lots of events and activities for all ages - ranging from festivals, feasts, Family Fridays (music and kids shows), Free Yoga, etc.. The Miracle on Main Street Tree lighting and community caroling is great fun and SummerFest and Seafood Fest are good times.
It has a good core - a solid and lovely little main street with shop owners who get to know their clients and which makes shopping locally a priority. I don't need to 'escape' for a fun day - we stroll down Main, stop for an ice - have a slice or go to a nicer restaurant - drop into the Four Star for some knick knacks, play with the nostalgia toys in the Toy Store, Listen to the street musicians who sometimes hang out by Starbucks - or play at La Tavola during Happy Hour.
The schools are great and are well supported by the family and the community as a whole.
We have a beautiful little marina park and no matter where you live you are pretty much walking distance from the Bay and close to the Fire Island Ferries.
It's big enough that not everyone is in your business, but small enough that a stroll through town will undoubtedly lead you to a few friendly conversations and lots of friendly waves and greetings.
I honestly love it here and hope to stay for a long time!
Wow, I want to move to Sayville now
Even though I am only a few towns over in EI, I have always told DH that I want to move to Sayville! Ahhhh, someday!

Re: Spinoff to my unhappy where you live post, where do all you happy people live?
Patchogue. Why do I love it? It's very community based and I feel it's an up and coming neighborhood. We have great restaurants, great parks, great community events, and the thing that really drew me here was the emphasis that is placed on the arts here. This town supports artists and musicians in a way that I haven't seen outside of parts of NYC. We have the theatre and now they're building affordable studio space for artists and musicians, we have community talent shows for kids and their bands, we have galleries, art shows, etc. It's so amazing to me, as a musician, to see the support for what I do. I think we have a bad rep. until people spend some time here. In fact, my parents were horrified that we bought a house in Patchogue at first and then when they spent some more time down here, they fell in love with it and now live here, too! And two of their friends who have spent time at our house and now theirs are currently looking for homes here. So much is being built here. A state of the art YMCA, the art/music studios I talked about, a new hotel in town, etc. I feel really good about our decision to move here and to raise our kids here.

We're 1 town over, Oakdale so we spend a lot of time in Sayville and I agree it's an awesome community. Oakdale is great too. My block and the block around the corner are filled with kids. There are 20 kids ranging from 4yrs and under. We lucked out.

Commack - I'm so close to parks, stores and a mile from the parkway! It makes getting anywhere very easy! Great schools, too!
Me too. Very easy place too live----- no traffic, lots of shopping, minutes from the northern state pkway, LIE and the sunken meadow pkway Plus great schools. The only thing that's missing is a "main street" but we go to huntington. northport or smithtown for that....

I live in Babylon Village and love it here. It has Argyle park, main street shopping and restaurants, a really nice village pool and beach, small close knit community and schools. I live right on the water, there's a canal in my yard and the bay down the street. I can walk to a little park and marina right around the corner.
When it's nice out I walk to the deli around the block to get a bagel and sit by the bay while I eat. Then Jack and I go to play at the park and take a walk around to look at the boats. I love that I can do all of that without leaving my neighborhood.
My husband commutes to the city and the train station is only a few minute drive. It's the first stop, so there's always a seat in the morning. Lots of express trains so it's about an hour ride.
I lived in W. Babylon and loved it! I also commuted and there were frequent trains. I loved that the train was near the lake so that is what I saw every morning and night. I loved being near the beach, and Main street with all the restaurants and shops.
We just bought a house in Ronkonkoma. We are right next to the lake. I love our house. It was just built and fully loaded, but I do miss West Babylon. I'm still getting used to the area here and the commute.

Great schools, family oriented community, parades down main st. for every holiday, great rec program, YMCA 10 min. away with a ton of kids programs. I like how there are no "big box" stores here, but all we have to do is drive 10 min. and we have everything we need.

Setauket (Three Village) Love our neighborhood--all of the houses are so well taken care of, and it's very family friendly. There are tons of kids on our block, and our neighbors always invite us over/to kid bday parties. It is close to shopping, but also 5 mins from West Meadow Beach. The schools are famous, and also beautiful (each school looks like a movie set!). We live on a tree-lined street with a very shady backyard. The schools were really the most important part of our choice.

Re: Spinoff to my unhappy where you live post, where do all you happy people live?
Northern Westchester (Somers) I grew up in LI and my DH grew up in Kingston (his family is now in West Haven, CT.) We lived in NYC for a while, but once we had kids we moved in the middle of both parents. We are a little over an hour away from either side.
I LOVE it up here and won't go back to LI. I miss the beaches sometimes (I grew up on the South Shore), but I still visit We have more land, no traffic, no crowding, everyone is friendly, great schools, family oriented, lots of parks and stuff for kids to do. I was in LI a few weeks ago and had to stop at BJ's in Levittown it was madness. I don't miss that at all. Even on the busiest day here, it's not that crazy!

you know exactly where I live.
but we are also equally happy at our house upstate. there is so much to do in the area, and even though I can't walk to a bagel store it makes up for it in other ways.
Where Upstate do you live? DH and I are toying with the idea of moving out of Manhattan and going upstate (Albany area).
we have a house in Orange County, about 10 mins out of Sullivan, 20 minutes from woodbury commons. surrounded by horse farms, picking farms, nestled in between the Delaware and Hudson Rivers in the foothills of the Shawangunk Mountain range.
it's beautiful. so much to do for the kiddos.
we have friends/family that just moved to Schenectedy and the really love it. were living in Valley Stream before that. very close to Albany. lovely historic homes. they are really happy they made the move!
