But why? If you have Christmas Shopping to do any way? Whats the difference if you go on Friday or Saturday (besides Sales why not save money?)
That's what I was wondering.
me too
this day has long be the tradtional day that retailers START to make money for the year- hence the term "Black Friday" (moving from the Red to black)
why is this such a bad day? to call it the devil seems alittle over the top IMO
but maybe I am baised b/c my livelyhood is based on retail
Ya I just don't get it. You are still gonna buy things for people right? So why does it matter what day you do it. Seems silly i think any day created to get people's butts away from their families, and spend the ONE day they have off to shop is evil. There, I said it. I didn't say YOU are evil. Just a day created to rush people out to buy buy buy buy buy buy buy.....

We don't really go out and do Xmas shopping... we order stuff online here and there, buy things as we go, etc - we have a list of specific things that DH's daughters want, so it doesn't warrant a trip somewhere...
We don't really buy something because its on sale, we buy things that we know people want, and most of the time, I use a coupon I already have for the store, or we buy it whenever - its not like we buy that much anyway - so really, its not like a big day of spending/buying, etc... so, if we buy one or two things regular price, and spend 100-200 dollars, then its better than buying 10 things on sale for someone, and spending 300-500 dollars. We save money, by not spending it!!!
also, honestly, we sometimes buy things the week of xmas, and those sales are still there - sometimes really, really cheap too!
It's so funny that a day was created to cause a wide panic and get everyone out the door at 5 in the morning the day after Thanksgiving!!! It's like the stores are afraid that people may actually stay home and do something like spend time with their families... god forbid - no money in THAT!
I still don't understand though? Whats the difference if you are buying on friday or saturday. You still have CHRISTMAS shopping to do......
I said besides sales.

no- that's not why the day was created- I posted it above- it the day the stores had traditionally started making money for the year- and now they capitalize on
most of the money stores make are in the 4th Q- which is Oct- Dec 31
so this season can make or break a stores year- they aren't just trying to cause a panic- it has nothing to do with wanting people not to spend time with there families
and doesn't every one spend the day before with there families????
ok...
Honestly, I'm not trying to start a fight - if I was, I'd have to rush out and buy a set of really cool boxing gloves on sale!
I just have a different mind set regarding this whole mad rush to buy more on sale, which doesnt always save people money. It helps people validate spending MORE money, because they have "saved" so much in the process....

Also my dh and I both have to work. Not everyone is able to spend it home with their families.

Why go out on the busiest day of the year, when I can go out on a non busy day and get the same thing accomplished? Or buy it online? Not to mention that the majority of my day, I have a 20 lb turkey I need to lug around, who will most likely scream if I spend more than 5 mintes inside a store...

i have to say i disagree with this! i don't buy "more" -- i just get a lot of stuff for the same amount i would spend for xmas presents anyway, that day. for example i know that i'm spending xxx amount of dollars for xmas--well using that budget and checking out the deals on black friday, i know that i can get a bunch of stuff that day and do majority of all of my shopping in one day.
if i can save $$ doing it--that's helps me out even more. so instead of getting 1 item each for everyone in my family (i usually have to get between 30 and 35 gifts min. for all my immediate family and friends)---spending the budgetd XXX amount--i can perhaps get 2 things for ppl and maybe even 3 for the kiddies! that's how i shop.

No no no noooooo my child... No...
We got some of that out of the way. The rest is being done early december.... We cant do anything until DH gets his xmas bonus anyway... So, it would be anywhere from dec 1-dec 22... Obviously online shopping has to be done early dec... everything else is done with DH going out to the malls with his daughters while I stay home with baby cakes.

Why can't you and your family go christmas shopping? Why can't it be a family thing?
I used to go with my Mom!
Not because it was the start of the Christmas season, or for sales, but because before I was married & I would come out on Wednesday night & stay on LI for the weekend, so we'd go b/c we don't get to shop together often.
And honestly, the Sunrise Mall in the late morning/early afternoon was never that bad.
DH doesn't like to go b/c of the crowds, but really, we don't have our Christmas list ready at all, there is no point to go now.
Our not shopping isn't any kind of statement.

We used to go all the time with my stepdaughters - not on Black Friday - but in general - we cant all go together this year because we can only do evenings and thats Cailen's bedtime...
I wouldnt say I'm making a statement by not going out on Black Friday - I would just rather wait in the whole shopping thing and spend my day off in my jammies with my family... Thats just me - it doesnt mean that everyone has to feel that way. Some people LOVE that rush. I just dont.

That's how my DH is. I don't really care either way, but he sees it as a a day off- for being lazy & he hates shopping more than going to work, so why would he do that?
We also don't have kids or a ton of people to buy for.

From what I've read, b/c the economy is so bad right now, Black Friday sales will be extended through most of the shopping season.

Lets hear it for LAZINESS!!! Can I hear a hoo ha?
We have to be at my parents at around 4-ish anyway because we spend 2 nights of thanksgiving so no one has to make hard choices on who to be with on Thanksgiving day, so really, by the time I'm all set to do nothing and enjoy my day, we'll have to get everyone ready to get out the door again!

We always go, it's tradition. It's fun to me. I'm a sick person though I've even roped my little sister and her FH into going and this will be their third year! FBIL even made a list of the things he wants to get that he saw on the black friday websites. I have nothing to buy that day really, but I'm sure I'll get something. I better get something if I'm getting to Kohls at 3:30am

I never go, but its because I personally have ZERO tolerance for crowded places. I can only handle the mall for an hour or so at a time when its not XMas season.
I work in a hospital, so I do all my shopping on my weekday off during December.
I know some people really enjoy it. One of my friends is on some line every year for 6 am openings. I would just loose it.

We have serious financial issues, and still don't venture out... we just buy less for everyone!
I also buy things on sale as I see them throughout the year for bdays and holidays. There are always great sales - not just on the most evil day of the year!
ITA!
Same here!
I like the premise of buy nothing, though. Seriously...HOW MUCH FRIGGIN SH!T DO WE NEED???
