We have serious financial issues, and still don't venture out... we just buy less for everyone!
I also buy things on sale as I see them throughout the year for bdays and holidays. There are always great sales - not just on the most evil day of the year!
ITA!
Same here!
I like the premise of buy nothing, though. Seriously...HOW MUCH FRIGGIN SH!T DO WE NEED???
I'm with you on that. We eliminated the secret santa from my side of the family this year, we are all adults no little kids & instead on christmas day everyone is giving me $25 & I'm writing a check to St Judes & we are mailing it out together. DH & will only do stocking stuffers for each other. My kids are getting two "big" items each & money in their savings accounts. I will go to the coach outlet early on a wed morning sometime before christmas when the sales will be better than BF anyway & buy gifts for our Moms. I'll make food theme gift baskets that I only spend about $20 to make for a couple of friends & neighbors. My office adopted a family from church, as did we so I have about 6 children's gifts to buy which I'll likely do online. Then I'm DONE!!! My entire family has come to the realization that we all have too much & we want to try to get back to what the holiday is really about-FAMILY.
Also I live 6 minutes from Tanger I can assure you that they put out crap on BF just so they have enough to sell, the mid week december sales there are WAY better if you're really looking for great discounts. I'm also not tricked by best buy or whatever store having only FOUR 60 inch plasmas for $500, I hate that whole bait & switch thing they do just to get sheeple in the stores.
as for the economy, the richest of the rich will keep us afloat as they do anyway & the retailers can live off the glutany that americans induldged in the last several years while maxing out their credit cards & spending their home equity on gifts.

some people have no choice but to shop on a day like black friday b/c, financially, it is when things are on sale and most affordable. luckily, i don't have to go - we are ok this year so that i don't have to take advantage of the money saving sales but i feel bad for those that do - those that want to give their kids, spouses and relatives really nice things for xmas w/o breaking the bank.
I totally see where you are coming from, but if one is having serious financial issues, don't buy "really nice things". To me, the measure of a relationship is not how big or expensive the present is on a holiday or birthday. Its the way they treat me all year round.
It makes me so sad when i hear about people going into debt or crazy shopping to get gifts for loved ones. Your loved ones want you to be OK financiallly. Take the steps you need to make that happen. (And I'm in that boat. I understand).
Honestly, the thing I want the most for every holiday from DH is a card with hearfelt words in it. But from a spouse, i would love a book of poetry that describes his feelings.
For a child, there are so many toys out there varying from any price. Or how about a weekend away or something- an experience they will cherish, not just some toy they will get bored with in a few weeks and forget all about.
For a relative, if you can't afford it, don't get anyone anything. Your family will understand.

Uch, I never shop on black friday - I'm not a big fan of shopping to begin with, so there's no way in hell you'll find me navigating through the masses and masses of grump shopaholics!
