Spinoff to not wanting to be induced - C-Section

I have been scheduled for a c-section for next week, due to the fact that the cord is around the baby's neck and shoulders. I see that many people are opposed to C-Sections, as well as inductions, so I was just curious what your reasoning was, and also, if put in my position, would you be okay with a c-sect?

To answer my own question, I am okay with the c-sect because I feel that it is the safest choice for my baby, and because of that I will deal with any of the pain / recovery / side effects that come from it.

I have had a little bit of a hard time accepting that there is a 99% chance that I will have a scheduled c-section, as I feel like I am never going to be able to go through what my body should do, and I also feel guilty that dh won't have the surprise factor as to when our baby is born - but again, as long as my baby is safe and healthy, I am okay with it.

Just curious what others opinions areChat Icon

If I were in your situation, I would be comfortable with a c-section. I wouldn't care as long as the baby is delivered as safely as pssible.

btw, I LOVE the doggy in your avatar. Is he your dog?

In your case i would be 100% for the c-section. Im against it when it is a result of an induction that wasnt necessary to begin w/

I'm not opposed to inductions or c-sections, I just wanted to say that my recovery from my first c-section really wasn't bad at all, I had a fabulous experience.

in your situation i 100% agree that it is the best course.. but ingeneral i am against them... there is alot of evidence that the labor process is beneficial to the baby because the contractions help clear out the lungs.... and i really just do not feel the need to have unneccessary surgery.. they tried to push a c/s on me with ds because he was running big and i refused... he was born naturaly.. again they are pushing it this time but i am trying to avoid it

ditto! But, being the PIA patient that I am, I would also see another OB for a second opinion.

Re: Spinoff to not wanting to be induced - C-Section

I did not want a c-section, but I was having twins, and Baby A was breech. They cannot try to turn the baby when there is more than one in there, it is way too dangerous; as is trying to vaginally deliver a footing breech baby.
So I felt comfortable with having a scheduled section, although it was not what I wanted.

Re: Spinoff to not wanting to be induced - C-Section

Absolutely. I am a weird one-I am not for inductions unless medically necessary and my view on C's are generally, they don't do them unless medically necessary as well. (Although I know there are exceptions in this world). Just for the record, I have no objection if someone else did a C without a medical need-just not me.

I have a different situation which might lead to a C-I have rheumatoid arthritis and a missing disc in my back so my doctors are evaluating whether in my special case whether a regular delivery would put too much stress on my joints. That could affect my ability to care for the baby, so if I do a C, it is medically necessary.

Same with a repeat C-for many women, a VBAC is not an option.

And some babies won't come out on their own-breech, traverse, etc.

My main objection to a induction is that often they lead to a C. My body cannot handle that kind of stress.

Sorry, that was long winded! Chat Icon

ITA! I feel like C-sections are looked at as no big deal because there are so many of them now. But they should be seen as a big deal. It is major surgery! There are so many benefits to natural childbirth. So many O.B's run to do c-sections for liability reasons, conflict of schedule, etc. It is really sad what i happening to our birthing experience, (in my opinion).

You are in a totally different situation. If I was in your shoes I would listen to what my midwifes have to say. They have a 10% c-section rate, so I know if they suggested one, then it would definitely be needed.

Re: Spinoff to not wanting to be induced - C-Section

C-sections get a bad rap these days and in some situations they should not. The American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology sets forth situations in which doctors should consider C-sections. In addition, many hospitals have their own sets of rules. Doctors cannot perform C-sections on a whim or on the whims of their patients. You have a right to question your doctors but you do not have to buy into the anti-C-section propaganda. If I sound harsh that is because I absolutely needed a C-section and got tired of answering to people who questioned my need for it. Vaginal birth would have been a huge risk for me and baby.

I don't think anyone is saying that there are not legitimate reasons for a c-section, there absolutely is, Bean has one!

But if you look at statistics and facts I don't believe it is anti-c-section propaganda, I think there is more pro-c-section propaganda out there.

The rates in this county are alarming, and are still on the rise. And Doctors can absolutely schedule c-sections on a whim, my friends have done it. Just like people can schedule inductions for convenience as well.

Re: Spinoff to not wanting to be induced - C-Section

I am having a c - due to the fact that my last delivery (11 years ago) was an emergency c/s (I hemorrhaged, etc) and he is reluctant to take that chance.

I am okay with his decision, he's a Dr., I'm a math teacher. I asked him if we could schedule the birth around my 2 DS's bdays. He couldn't because the hospitals rules are so stringent when it comes to c-sections. Part of me wishes we could do a vbac, but if something went wrong: I would never forgive myself.

Re: Spinoff to not wanting to be induced - C-Section

If I was in your situation I would def be ok with a c-section.

I had what was considered a sched c-section with my 1st. I was starting to show signs of Preclampsia and I wasn't dilated and my cervix was tight and closed and the baby hadn't dropped. I discussed it with my OB and he felt because of these factors I was more likely to end up with a c-section even after being induced. So we decided to go with the c-section. I didn't want to labor only to end up with a c-section anyway which is what a lot of the women in my family ended up doing. I felt it was the best decision for us.

In your situation I would absolutely be okay with a scheduled c-section and I think it's so amazing that sonograms these days can pick up on things like this so we can all have safe deliveries for our babies Chat Icon

When I had my scheduled c-section the choice was left up to me - one of my OBs told me she would wait, one told me she would have the C. I was nervous about delivering a 10 lb baby and I went for the C.

I had a fabulous experience but now that I have done a lot more research I am looking forward to the opportunity to have a VBAC - but I have no problem having another c-section if that's what I need.

yes, if I was in your situation, I would have a scheduled c-section also.

I want to avoid a C/S because of the recovery- but if there was something wrong with the baby, making labor difficult or dangerous, I would of course go for the C/S. The most important thing is to get the baby out safely.

Good luck!!

Re: Spinoff to not wanting to be induced - C-Section

oh and total side note- anybody ever saw the baby story with the biracial couple- the guy was from the UK- he was a spin instructor and meet his wife in spin class. They had a scheduled c/s and he was the cutest- so excited and when the baby came out he cried and could barely stand. It was the best reaction I ever saw on baby story- loved that guy. So the scheduled c/s is just as miraculous as a regular birth- your still getting your baby at the end!

Re: Spinoff to not wanting to be induced - C-Section

i kind of kenw from day 1 that i would need a section.. not sure why but most likely because my life is always complicated so i just assumed this would be the same.. and well... i was 100% correct.

I had tons and tons of complications throughout my whole prenancy and then i started having ALOT of blood pressure issues. then they found the cord was around dd neck a "few" times. I ended up going into the hospital for an induction (which i was scared to death of at 37 weeks) which ended up being an EMERGENCY section within 2 hours of being admitted. it was mostly my choice my dr knew how scared of the inductio i was and i told her i felt more comfrotable with the section. I was honeslty scared for my own health my blood pressure was 210/118 at one point. and i was scared i have a heart attack or stroke or something insane if i started to put and oi was scared for the baby that the cord would strangle her the list went on and on.

I ended up having the section i had complete peace of mind and was sooooo happy i did my recovery was fantastic... the surgery it self is a whole other story thati wont go into! Chat Icon

so to answer your question.. in your situation i would 100% get the section its not all that bad! Chat Icon

Re: Spinoff to not wanting to be induced - C-Section

During my first prgnancy, I had previa for awhile and was told if it stayed, I would need a c-section. I really didn't want that for a number of reasons. They were 1) it was my first pregnancy, and I wanted more kids, so if I had a section with the first, i knew I would likely always have to have a section; 2) strangely enough, I really wanted to experience labor and was sad about the idea of not having the full labor experience; 3) I wanted the surprise towards the end of wondering when she would arrive, if this was it, etc. I didn't want to pick her birthday; 4) i didnt want a scar. This time, i have similar reasons for not wanting a section, plus two more---5) I dont want the extended hospital stay because I already have one DD at home and dont want to spend extra nights/days away from her; and 6) a newborn is light, so although I could probably carry DD2, I probably couldnt pick up DD1 for a bit, and would just generally be not as fully able to interact with DD1.

Re: Spinoff to not wanting to be induced - C-Section

In your situation I would be comfortable with the c-section. I want to avoid a c-section at all costs, however when there is a medical necessity so be it. I know I can plan to go natural all along, and then my baby can decide to be breech or transverse, and I too would have a scheduled section. I just feel sometimes medical personal are quick to opt for c-section when it is not really necessary. Also I don't think ppl should be allowed to schedule a c-section without a medical reason. It is major surgery, and I just don't feel ppl should be allowed to elect to have surgery. Just my opinion don't mean to offend anyone. The goal is for their to be a healthy mommy, and healthy baby, and if a c-section is going to produce that result then I am all for it. I am just terrified I have never had any kind of surgery.

Re: Spinoff to not wanting to be induced - C-Section

Since I haven't seen your sonos or spoken with your doctor it's hard for me to say exactly what I would do in your situation, but if I were being offered a preemptive C-section before going into labor simply because the cord was around the neck I think I would have a hard time agreeing to it, based on my previous experience (but I would also have a hard time declining it because I would be so worried about the baby until he was safely born).

My first son was born vaginally with the cord around his neck several times. His heartrate was fine throughout labor and the only time he registered any stress was at the very end when the cord was pinching against the pubic bone -- that was the only clue that he had a cord issue. Babies are born with cords around their necks all the time. I guess in retrospect I'm glad I didn't know the cord was around his neck because it would have worried me quite a bit. So, if I were in your position I would probably opt for continuous monitoring during labor and go for the C if his heartrate started registering stress.

They may be more concerned with your situation since the cord is around the body. In any case, I'm sorry you have to deal with this. You shouldn't feel guilty for scheduling a C, I can understand why you would be scared.

To answer your other question about why some people are opposed to inductions or C-sections, I am opposed to both of those when they are not medically necessary since the healthiest way for a normal, healthy baby (in a normal situation) to be born is vaginally.
