Re: spinoff to shelly's post - DO you give compliments to strangers ?

i do only when the i'm right near the baby. my dh doesn't like it when i talk to strangers. he feels strange and obligated to (that he should) say something but he won't. he'll just abruptly walk away. once i'm done chit chatting - which only takes a minute, max! he asks me, "why do you have to talk to strangers for??" hey! i need to talk to an adult! i'm with ds all day long.

i also do not mind when someone else approaches me. well, i guess it depends. while i was at a park w my mom, i noticed a woman pushing her baby in a stroller circling around me. she ended up approaching me. she asked a random q and then continued to cirle around me. WIERD!

I usually do, but people dont always like it. Yesterday I was in Target and I was waiting in line and the woman in front of me had a newborn with her. I didnt get close to the baby or anything I just said oh how cute or something like that and she just muttered thanks and turned her back to me.rolleyes:

Around X mas time I saw a family walking into Starbucks. The parents were ahead of their 3 teeneage sons. The sons stopped to open a door for a man who was on crutches, one held the door, one held his bags and one assisted him to his car parked right in front. I was so touched by this, I hurried into to starbcuks to tell the parents. The mom teared up, so proud, the dad had a HUGE grin on his face.... obviously they had done something right.

Yes, I do. If they are right next to me I will say something, but if they are like 10 feet away I do not walk over to them.

Same here. I will definitely compliment someone but it's usually limited to the child - "she's adorable", "he's so good" or along those lines. Unless of course it's a parent with 3 kids or more in tow, then I can't help but say "How do you do it?" because I do wonder...I always feel like I have whiplash and got a workout when I take my 3 out alone. Now going over to someone and complimenting them on their parenting skills, that's totally something my Mom would do. I won't say it's weird but it's overly personal in a way. I just don't gush over strangers like that. But like I said, that's me. If I was with my Mother she would say something and would include me into having to discuss the person....when I would not want to stand there and discuss someone playing pattycake with their child in public (or whatever). I sound like a b*tch but I'm not, I'm just not overly friendly that way. You're much more of a people person than I am, Anna.

I guess so. People are meant to interact in this world, regardless of where or who we are. Chat Icon

When I subbed at a certain school, I would always chit chat with the lady at the front desk that signs people in (we're paesans Chat Icon) well almost every day, I would make her get up and take a 5 minute break and get coffee, esp on the colder days. she thought I was nuts but what was 5 minutes, and it was 5 minutes that I chatted with the lovely parents coming in to drop off the glasses their kids forgot or the cupcakes for a party.

and its not really over gushing over parenting skills at all. if anything in general strikes me, I will almost always say something.
some people just put on a show in public. I usually catch people offguard in an unexpected moment, if that makes sense.

I hope you knew what I meant. Since I know you personally (and have been preggo with you 3x-I'm not going for 4 though LOL), I can comfortably say that I know you are much more at ease with putting yourself in different situations than I am (even a small thing like going out of your way to compliment someone) You are seriously better with people than I am, strangers or otherwise.

I do, especially when I am sitting near well behaved children in a restaurant.

Re: spinoff to shelly's post - DO you give compliments to strangers ?

I try to but many times I'm too shy to say anything. When I was pregnant, I got so many compliments from strangers and they made my day. I saw a pregnant woman on the subway last month and I was about to tell her how cute she looked but I shied away, thinking I'd look like a weirdo. I regretted it the minute she stepped off. I could've made her day like those others made my day.. pay it forward. I'm trying harder to do it more.
