Re: Spinoff to the Supermarket post...
Always! I find it so rude when I see people just sitting there as their stuff piles up at the end of the counter.

I bag my own stuff. I'm anal and want to put certain things together.

Re: Spinoff to the Supermarket post...
I try to use self check out. I find it hard to make sure the items are rung up with the correct price and bag when I go to a cashier.

Re: Spinoff to the Supermarket post...
always bag my own stuff. I just have a way I like to do it. If there is a line with a separate bagger, I specifically DON"T choose that line. I just prefer to do it myself.

Re: Spinoff to the Supermarket post...
I'm so anal about groceries and how they are packaged.
I make sure to put them on the belt by category -- frozen items together -- refrigereated items together -- pantry items together. That way if there is someone who is bagging at the end, I hope they figure out that I want all that stuff packaged together.
When they bag my groceries, I feel like the cashier doesn't want to overfill bags and will use one bag for a package of cheese.

Re: Spinoff to the Supermarket post...
My grocery store usually has a bagger, who will start bagging while the cashier is ringing stuff up. If there is not bagger, I usually wait until my stuff is all rung up and help the cashier.

I start to bag as soon as the cashier starts scanning. I don't like to hold up the line.

I always do. I think it also comes from the fact that I was a cashier at a supermarket for 6 years through high school and college.

I always do. I grew up in a family that founded/owned a well known supermarket chain in So Cal.
I worked as a Clerk's Helper (bagger) before I went to College.

Re: Spinoff to the Supermarket post...
I try to help the cashier out as much as possible to save bags, as some other posters have said. I can't figure out the incentive to use so many bags, but there must be one.
I also do it because I feel like it is rude to hold up the line if you don't have to. I've been behind people who just sit there while the cashier bags everything for them (which is their job technically), and it takes forever. If someone helps bag they are usually out of the way by the time the next customer starts getting helped. So I like to do my part to keep things moving.

I definitely bag my own (or at least help). I have a system and I like my items to be bagged according to where they go once I get home.
I do this too. Even if there is a "bagger" stationed at the end of the line, I also assist them. I also make sure to thank them for bagging.

Re: Spinoff to the Supermarket post...
I bag, I was as cashier/bookkeeper in hs, and I always appreciated when people helped me bag their things. Moved the process along a little faster.
I also do it now bc some cashiers do not know enough not to squeeze my bleach in the bread bag. Or my cleaning supplies in with my fruits and veggies or meat.

I do this too. The cashier/bagger usually screws it up though, and then I usually try to quickly re-bag the items the way I wanted in the first place AND using fewer bags.

Re: Spinoff to the Supermarket post...
DH & I are a team
He bags the groceries. He's really particular about how things are bagged, and it puts him on tilt when someone else bags our groceries.
And I watch the groceries being rung up to make sure we aren't being double charged for something, etc.

I bag myself but only because I am completely anal and must bag certain items together, etc.
Me too!!!
I bring my own bags to the store also.
I hate when the cashier puts cleaning products in the same bag as food products. I know, it's my pet peeve, which is why it's easier if I do it myself.

I think they are afraid the bags will tear and they have to replace what is broken. They must be amazed how much stuff I shove in one bag. The seams are groaning.

Re: Spinoff to the Supermarket post...
There is a bagger at my grocery store and by the time everything is rung up and Im done signing everything, he is usually done. If not, I will help out.
When I used to go to Walbaums, there never was a bagger so DH always bagged our groceries

Re: Spinoff to the Supermarket post...
Sometimes there is someone else there to help the cashier and by the time I am done putting the groceries on the belt and pay the person is done . But if there is no-one else I do help and have no problem doing so.

I do the same thing! I don't bag though. Can't. The Super Walmart that I shop at has a bag carousel at the end of it and the cashier scans and then directly places things into the bag. She turns the whole thing with the packed bags on it and I take them and stick them in my cart. There is no long belt like at the regular supermarket where I can help bag. I do help bag if I ever shop at the other supermarkets though.

This is what I do also...
