Re: Spinoff to the Supermarket post...
yes, but I almost always go alone and don't buy a whole cart at a time. so most times, I have only filled 2 or 3 bags by the time the cashier is done ringing me up. so while I pay, she/he bags the rest.

Re: Spinoff to the Supermarket post...
In FL (at Publix) there is always a separate bagger at every check out. They bag the groceries AND take them out to the car for you if you need them to. They even have pins on that say something like "this is my job, we do not accept tips". I always used to bag my own in NY though.

I bag my own. I feel like they usually just throw everything in all together.

Re: Spinoff to the Supermarket post...
i insist that i do it. i hate when they do it. they put like 2 items in a bag and then i'm stuck with 55 plastic bags when i could have gotten everything in 3 bags.

Re: Spinoff to the Supermarket post...
I always bag my groceries, as the cashier rings them up... I don't want to hold up the line. Usually the cashier is very grateful too.

Re: Spinoff to the Supermarket post...
I always bag my own or do it in tandem with the cashier. Also, bc someone mentioned it about checking the prices while getting rung up, I check my receipts when I get home and if I was charged incorrectly, I get an adjustment next time I am there. I use to watch the ring up all the time bc the supermarket I use to go to when I was living in the city was notorious for incorrect prices and bad ring ups but now I just double check at home, it's much easier.

Re: Spinoff to the Supermarket post...
I bag unless there is a bagger separate from the cashier. Usually these tend to be elderly or disabled people so I feel like they are getting paid to provide the service so I take it.
At whole foods they don't let you bag your own, so I never do there.
Also, I just want to mention that I hate it that Target does not allow you to bag your own because every time I forget my reusable bags the checkout person uses a GIANT PLASTIC bag for each and every item I purchase, no matter how small it is.

Re: Spinoff to the Supermarket post...
No, I do not bag groceries at the supermarket. I have a job that I get paid to do - bagging groceries at the supermarket is not it. The person standing behind the register however does get paid to bag my groceries.
Then again I'm from a generation where it was customary for supermarkets to employ people to stand at the end of the check-out line and bag groceries. Granted back then Kraft Mac & Cheese was 49¢ a box, individual containers of yogurt were 8oz, and coffee came in 1 pound cans (not 12 oz).
I see no reason to pay higher prices for less food, AND less service.

Re: Spinoff to the Supermarket post...
I help bag the groceries - but when we go to Pathmark, the way they do it there is scan and pack, scan and pack....but I help out if I can and I am not "in the way" so to speak.

Re: Spinoff to the Supermarket post...
If I have a small order, I use the self-scans, but if I have a large order, I go to the regular check out and I ALWAYS help bag. I actually had a cashier thank me once for helping bag. I was surprised...I didn't realize it was that uncommon. I just think that it's not only courteous to the cashier, but it's courteous to the person waiting behind you; it would be unfair for that person to not only have to wait for the cashier to ring up your items, but then wait for them to bag everything too, while you sit there twiddling your thumbs.

Re: Spinoff to the Supermarket post...
I think the cashier and the customer should both bag (unless they have baggers or the cashier bags it themselves like Pathmark).
Doing it that way gets everyone out fast, and isn't that what you really want?
My pet peeve is the people who apparently star in "Sherlock Holmes and the Mystery of the Paper Bags" since they apparently don't believe the cashier who says they're all out of paper.
