I prefer to bag my own because I like it done a certain way.

I don't like it when they do it for me...I once had a checkout clerk try to put a 2 liter bottle of soda and a loaf of bread in the same bag. I was like NEVER DO THATChat Icon Chat Icon Soda always wins! Chat Icon Chat Icon He thought I was crazy.

I usually always bag my own groceries. Although, I have to say it really irritates me when the cashier is done scanning, I'm bagging and they are standing there watching me bag not helping.

Re: Spinoff to the Supermarket post...

The supermarket I go to usually has baggers at the end of each checkout to do it, so I don't bag. But if there isn't one that day, I'll help. DH prefers to bag himself. He's very particular about packing things properly, it's funny.

Re: Spinoff to the Supermarket post...

I usually do. I bring my canvas bags and I have them set up in the empty cart. I just bag as everything comes down the belt.

I can't figure out the incentive to use so many bags, but there must be one.

I think they are afraid the bags will tear and they have to replace what is broken. They must be amazed how much stuff I shove in one bag. The seams are groaning. Chat Icon

I know that when i was a bagger (many many years ago), we were told to make the bags as light as possible, mainly because of elderly people who couldn't carry heavy bags. I would always try to put as many things as i could in a bag (within reason), only to have to take 1/2 of the things out for an elderly person who thought it was too heavy.

FTR, i always pack my own bags. I like to do it a certain way and I bring my own so i don't end up with 45 plastic ones. The supermarket baggers now don't bag with enough consideration.

And yes, i do think its a little rude to sit and watch the items pile up at the end of the belt and wait for the cashier to bag them when they're done ringing up. It holds the line up too.
If there's a bagger there, i usually end up repacking some of the bags they do anyway Chat Icon

I prefer to bag my own groceries too. Especially since I've been using my own bags. I like it done a certain way.

I bag my own groceries.

I don't do it to help the cashier, I do it to get out of the store faster.

But I LOVE when there is a bagger who does it for me...

DH hates to have anyone bag our groceries for us and he'll usually do it...

Re: Spinoff to the Supermarket post...

I prefer to bag my own groceries. Quite frankly, I have a system and the cashier just doesn't know it!! But I do appreciate it when they try to help, as frustrating as it is. I like to put things together based on where they go in my house and I hate it when cashiers just throw things together in a bag that have nothing to do with each other.

Re: Spinoff to the Supermarket post...

If I am able to I bag my own, but at A&P the bags are behind the counter so the casheir bags it. I rather do it myself, because I think its faster.

I do....unless of course there is someone bagging too and I don't have a lot and by the time I finish paying, its already bagged Chat Icon
I've seen some people stand there while the cashier bags everything...its one thing if you can't because of physical reasons etc...otherwise just freaking help them so we can all move faster Chat Icon

I also try bringing my own bags...I just leave them in my car, and usually fit more in my bags than in the plastic ones..

Usually, however at our grocery store they always have people bagging for you. I help but they are usually so quick.

Re: Spinoff to the Supermarket post...

There is no place for us to bag our own groceries here. I usually bring my own bags and I just give them to him / her to pack. If it is really busy, then I can bag it, but the counter is pretty high so it is difficult to do.

Usually they bag stuff for the customer, it is part of their job.

Re: Spinoff to the Supermarket post...

Yes for many reasons:
1. I can do it quicker
2. Stuff goes where I want it to
3. I use reusable bags
4. I like less bags so I tend to make them heavy (instead of the one item per bag thing most cashiers do)
5. I was a cashier for years and always appreciated when ppl bagged or at least help bag their groceries.

Unless DH is with me, then it's his job! Chat Icon

I ALWAYS do because I hate how the young kids at my supermarket bag. One bag will have one box of cereal and the next will have 10 cans.

Re: Spinoff to the Supermarket post...

So I wanna hear your systems so I can see if they are as anal as mine!

My groupings:

Dairy & frozen together
Glass with soft items which I use as a buffer
Square boxes together
Fruits & veggies together
Light stuff at the end to throw in the top of any other bag that isn't full

Food shopping CAN be an art! Chat Icon

By the way, baggers are not allowed to put chemicals with food items. So I usually get milk or eggs or whatnot in a separate bag. I found that out when I tried to put my 1/2 gallon of milk next to my Rid-X. Chat Icon

Re: Spinoff to the Supermarket post...

I do, but when I lived in SoCal and first started bagging they snickered at me and said I must be from NY and to stop bagging (they had a bagger at every station)...but they also said that in some parts of TX you don't even have to put the groceries on the belt!

Posted by Phyl

I always do. I grew up in a family that
founded/owned a well known supermarket chain in So Cal.

I worked as a Clerk's Helper (bagger) before I went to College.

ohh, I must know which one!!! Is it a name? Henry's? (Wild Oats) Ralphs? I loved both of those to death!!!

Yes, I like to bag mine so I can shove as much as possible into the one bag to #1 save on the plastic, #2 so I don't have to carry 20 bags up 2 flights of stairs, #3 just help out the cashier. As long as I can help, I will.

This is me to a tee, I can't understand why they use 3,345 bags, it's like they're paid a commission for using as many bags as humanly possible.

Right??? I hate that they will put 2 iems in a bag. I don't need 4 billion bags!

I always try to do it. If there's a bagger i will give instructions and watch what's rung up but I always check my receipt after I'm done.
