Spinoff to Would you say something - because of seaside's comment!
OK, so we have found out from my other post that most people on this site would not say anything to a person in a grocery store who neglects to put items on the belt to pay for them. The main reason that people gave was that "it's none of my business".
Seaside made a very interesting point that I wanted to turn into a new thread.
If you were in the parking lot and noticed that someone forgot to load something from their cart into their car (assuming that they paid for it) would you say something to them?
I guess the big curiosity for me is... would all the people who are big on minding their own business change their opinion for this question???

Yes, I would say something here but said no MYOB in the last thread.
Why? I am not going to get involved in what might possibly be someone trying to steal in a store. Once out of the store, I would assume it was paid for and tell them they forgot the item in the cart.
I have no desire to get into personal business IN a store, where workers should be doing their job and checking. That's not in my realm of what I feel responsible for. But to alert someone they forgot to load an item into their car, I do feel that is within my realm of obligation.

In your previous post I answered "no I don't see how its any of my business", and to your question here I answered that i would say something.
But to me the two situations are completely different, see in your previuos post I think that you saying something to me seems like you are trying to be the "store police" and/or getting in the middle of somthething that IMO is none of your business, and you don't know the intention of the other person.
But in this situation its clear no one wants to buy someting and leave it behind, so I see it as doing them a favor.

I would still say something (I answered I would say something in the other post).
I would say something in both cases because giving the person the benefit of the doubt, I'm thinking they truely and honestly forgot it was there... and chances are, if they forgot it was there in the store, they'll forget it is there when loading the car.

I would have said something in BOTH cases. I wouldn't have accused the person of trying to steal but I would offered to help them lift it up on to the counter or something.

So what I see happening is that people are drawing a line in their minds as far as what situations are OK to get involved in and what situations are not.
So if it is a situation where someone is going to be helped, imost people seem to think t is OK to get involved. If you see someone yelling out for help, you would call the police for them because they are asking for assistance. Or if someone dropped something, you would make sure to get their attention and give it back to them.
But if it is a situation where someone could get in trouble or there might be negative issues surrounding it, then we choose the path of "not my business"? So if I see my neighbors having a fight across the street and there are small children watching and crying... it's not bothering me and they are not asking for my help so I am not going to get involved. (this was another situation I witnessed and most people posted that they would not get involved)
Keep in mind that I am not judging, I am just trying to understand where people draw the line in their minds as to when it's OK and when it is not OK to step in.
I had a really hard time yesterday when I was in the store. If the cashier didn't say something, my mind was battling with itself as to whether or not I was going to say something!

Re: Spinoff to Would you say something - because of seaside's comment!
I said I would MYOB in the other thread, but I would say something here.
For me it is simply that I do not feel I can be the moral judge for someone else. If it were a situation where another person is in danger or being hurt, I would absolutely call the police or get help. But if I ever saw someone slip something into his/her pocket, I wouldn't do anything, it is not up to me to punish them or catch them.
In the other case, it would be against my moral character to not help someone when I know they need help or have forgotten something, so I would say something.

Re: Spinoff to Would you say something - because of seaside's comment!
I probably wouldnt say anything in the store but, would say something if they left it in the parking lot.
But, it is funny to me that most people would think that the person would want to steal it in the store verses that they just forgot it under their cart, because if we thought they just forgot it we would def say something like we would in the parking lot.

Different situation. I would assume 99.99999% of the people paid for these items. I would not run across a parking lot and leave my kids in the car to point it out but I would definitely tell someone.

I put I would Mind My Own Business but if I noticed someone forgetting something and they were near me I would say something. However, the chances of me noticing that is slim to none, like i said in my previous post I am usually occupied with my stuff and my car.

Yes, exactly - Other people's personal business is not MY business and if sticking my nose in it and opening my mouth could have ANY other consequence other than a positive one (ie: the person is appreciative and accepting of my assistance) then I'm staying out of it -
It's not my business to involve myself in someone else's grocery bill, or personal argument - Fired cashier, Crying kids or Whatever -
