Spinoff: what should age of 1st job be by?
What age do you think someone should have had a paid job by?
I know there are a lot of kids who are busy with sports, clubs and school and their parents can afford to pay for everything so the kids dont work until college or after. I guess thats fine because they are doing things that will lead them to a career?
I have family like the above and my neighbor who is 19 and living at home and in community college has never had a job. But at some point wont the experience matter?

Spinoff: age of 1st job
I started babysitting at 13, and I started teaching private violin lessons at 14 on my own, which I did for 11 years (so a bit different than a typical job). When I could get working papers at 16 I also got more traditional kid jobs (bakery, restaurant, etc).

Spinoff: age of 1st job
14, with babysitting or the like starting earlier. Edited after reading through some posts to add that you should DEFINITELY be working during the school year, not just summers. Life's hard buttercup, suck it up. This whole new concept of kids not working and parents coddling their kids is why I deal with 25 year olds graduating law school who can't even tie their own shoes.

My first real job (besides babysitting) was at 15 (I was a few months shy of 16). I will expect the same of my DD.

Re: Spinoff: what should age of 1st job be by?
I didn't have a job until college and even then it was a work-study job so it wasn't hard to get the job and the job was no more than 10 hours a week and fit around my class schedule.
I didn't have my first REAL job until after I graduated college and it was at an investment banking firm. It didn't matter that I hadn't had a real job before then, I think moreso bc I graduated from a big name school.

Spinoff: what should age of 1st job be by?
i started at 14 as a babysitter for a gym. Starting lifeguarding at 16
ETA: I did these because i knew if i wanted to go to the mall, movies, pay for gas for my car, etc. I would need to get a job. My parents made that very clear. I am glad they raised me that way because I learned early on how to manage my finances. I plan to do the same with my daughter

Re: Spinoff: what should age of 1st job be by?
I say 16 the latest. I have boys so I think it's harder for them to get jobs at 14 since most are babysitting. But they should be working by 16 minimum. We made my stepson get a job at 15 to learn responsibility and not lay around the house playing video games. Not cause he needed to, the kid wanted for nothing.
ETA: I plan on pushing my DS to do camp counselor in training or something at 14.

Spinoff: what should age of 1st job be by?
I started babysitting when I was young (13 maybe). I started lifeguarding over the summer at 16. I continued doing that until I was 24. I never had a job during the school year. I played 3 sports and participated in the HS drama/musical. Plus I took all AP classes.
As of now, I wouldn't make my son get a job at any specific age. I want him to concentrate on school/his interests, which I think is more important as a teen.

Spinoff: what should age of 1st job be by?
I started working at 15. I paid my clothes, concerts, cds and even ten percent into the house. At times I worked 2 jobs while going to high school. I loved working. I felt like I was apart of something big and honestly, I had more friends at my job(s) than at school. I do not think working affected my studies or extracurriculars.

(My older stepson NEVER had a job, even during summers while he was in college - and yes, DH is largely to blame for that (whole other issue lol). Aside from infuriating me, it did him a huge disservice when he graduated. 4 years later and he still has no work ethic and thinks he knows more than anyone else at his company). My younger SS wanted to work and knew that he was expected to - he has a completely different outlook on things
