Started cereals - how long did it take your DC to learn to eat?

We started rice cereal tonight! DD is 5 months (ped recommended it last month, but I didn't think she was ready). Most of the cereal went on her bib, under her chin, or on her onesie. She liked gumming the spoon though, lol. How long did it take your DC to figure out how to eat?

I waited until 6 months (with squash) and she got it right away, it was amazing!

I started at 4 months. It took about 3 days and then she was opening her mouth everytime I brought the spoon up. One thing that helped is I sort of made sure the spoon went above her tongue and more towards the back of it.

Re: Started cereals - how long did it take your DC to learn to eat?

We were on day 2 today. I'm figuring on it taking a week or so (our ped said to start with just a tsp and to feed her it only in the mornings for the first week just to see how she reacts the rest of the day... I'd rather be feeding her at night, but I listen to my ped). Her 4-month appointment is on 5/10 (but she's 4 months this week and has made it VERY clear she's starving and wants to start eating) so we're hoping to be able to talk more to the ped in person about it when we go next week. She's really cute when she tries to tongue at the food, though. Chat Icon

Well, most breastfeeding mamas I know are told to wait until 6 months to start solids. My DD wasn't sending any "I'm hungry!" signals, so after discussing that with my ped, we decided to postpone it for a few weeks.

Re: Started cereals - how long did it take your DC to learn to eat?

My daughter tried giving my granddaughter oatmeal at around 4 1/2 mos. She didn't like it and her tongue kept going to the roof of her mouth. ped said to try again in a few weeks. She tried again 2 wks ago and she got it immediately. She LOVES her oatmeal. Went to ped. on Fri. Said she could start veggies, then fruit. To stick with only oatmeal cereal for now, others are too binding. My daughter baked a fresh sweet potato and put it into blender with a little formula. She has been devouring it. She is loving it. She grabs the spoon and pulls it into her mouth. What a difference a few weeks made. She will be 6 mos. next Sat.

Yeah, I've definitely heard that if you're BF, you can/should wait. Unfortunately, I was unable to BF. See many embarrassing, devastated posts all over LIF where I chronicle my disappointment.

I don't think there's a right answer as to when to start. I always just call and ask a zillion questions because I have no clue what I'm doing. But I have a good friend whose daughter is EBF and they just started solids with her at 6 months a few weeks ago.

I'm looking forward to hearing how it's going! Let me know, please! Chat Icon It's so exciting!

It took ds about two weeks to fully understand. We started at 4 months he understood two weeks later. Just keep trying at least two spoons full once a day and when dd starts opening her mouth and trying to grab the spoon you will know if she understands or not.

DS was ready at 5 months, DD wasn't really ready until 6 months.

Re: Started cereals - how long did it take your DC to learn to eat?

I am EBF (or was till cereal lol) and started last week at 5 months. I was amazed at how well my guy took to it. Opened his mouth right away! We started with rice for 3 days once a day..then oatmeal in the morning and rice in the evening for 3 days , then barley in the morning and rice OR oatmeal at night.
But I did hear it usually takes about a week or so till they get the hang of it. Stick with it!

I'm sorry! I wasn't trying to pour salt in a wound. Just trying to clarify my original post.

We started DS at 3 months. He was getting zantac for reflux and it tasted horrible. I put it in Stage 1 applesauce and he ate it right up. He had no problems with the spoon feeding...
