Starting cereal... a few question.
DS is 3 1/2 months old. He has his 3mo appt on Monday (where we know the Dr is going to discuss cereal).
How old was your DC when they started? Did you get the OK from your ped before you started? **If you did not wait for the OK, what made you start? Did you add cereal to their bottle or did you spoon feed? Did you just start with 1 tbls?
TIA!
ETA: DS takes 6oz of formula every 3-4hrs. Lately, he's barely been making it to 3 hours before he's hungry again. I just wonder if we should start him on cereal instead of upping the amount of formula.

Re: Starting cereal... a few question.
How old was your DC when they started? DD was 4.5 months.
Did you get the OK from your ped before you started?
Yes, I got the okay at her 4 month appt.
Did you add cereal to their bottle or did you spoon feed?
I spoon fed her...everyone told me to do it this way so she could get used to the spoon.
Did you just start with 1 tbls?
My ped said to start with 1 teaspoon and increase gradually as tolerated.

Yes- her 4 month appt was a bit late- she was like 4.5 months and I told the dr how many ounces she was drinking and he said to start solids
Did you add cereal to their bottle or did you spoon feed?
spoon - Dr said the whole point of cereal is to learn how to eat off a spoon
Did you just start with 1 tbls?
Yes- Ped said start with one tablespoon and go up from there. The first few times she barely got any down though- they tend to not know what to do with it at first and it just will fall out of there mouth. It takes a bit of practice ETA_ i think we use the same Ped. They don't talk about cereal until 4 months. Especially Patel- she is more conservation with solids than Eisenberg.

Re: Starting cereal... a few question.
First off DS was same as your son.. Dr told us that he is making up for what he needs to eat bc he was sttn. Ds was eating every 2-3 hours. Dr. Did not want us to start cereal. He said that research shows that starting solids before 4 months can cause an increased risk of food allergies and diabeties. I think your DS is on the young side for cereal- every 3 hours isnt bad he is only 3 months - but i know how annoying it is to feed that often! DS didnt have a good feeding schedule until 5 months old
How old was your DC when they started? 4 mo
Did you get the OK from your ped before you started? Yes we waited until dr tild us to start
Did you add cereal to their bottle or did you spoon feed? We spoon fed Did you just start with 1 tbls? 2-3 tsps and about a week later

Re: Starting cereal... a few question.
I think I would up the amount of formula. I dont think cereal in the beginning can replace a real meal. they eat very little in the beginning:
How old was your DC when they started? 1 week shy of 5 months Did you get the OK from your ped before you started? yes Did you add cereal to their bottle or did you spoon feed? spoon fed Did you just start with 1 tbls? started with a few teaspoons.
DD is 5 months and still eats every 3 hours (STTN 7-7).

Re: Starting cereal... a few question.
How old was your DC when they started? 9weeks
Did you get the OK from your ped before you started? no i didnt
**If you did not wait for the OK, what made you start? she had terrible reflux and she was on neutramigan which is super thin
Did you add cereal to their bottle or did you spoon feed? she was getting it in her bottle because she was taking almost 8oz every 2-3 hrs and like above was on neutramigan which is super thin and was projectile vomiting it up so i added cereal to her bottles she did fabulous on it.. we also were letting her lick it off a spoon around 10 week. but as far as introducing it as a meal type thing we started at 3 months
Did you just start with 1 tbls? off the spoon at 3 months YES... before it was a teaspoon per oz of formula

Yes... same OB same Ped... haha!!! Funny that you said that about Patel bc his 2 month was with her and SHE said that at his 3 month we would discuss cereal.
I don't want to up his oz because, I forgot to mention, he's not always finishing his 6oz bottles. I'm just not sure it's enough for him... and when he does finish he screams for me.
This might make me sound like a horrible mother, but I HATE feeding... I always have, esp since DS had pyloric stenosis.... feeding is no fun for me.

Re: Starting cereal... a few question.
How old was your DC when they started? - just shy of 6 months
Did you get the OK from your ped before you started? - we tried on our own around 4 months but he wasnt ready.
Did you add cereal to their bottle or did you spoon feed? - spoon feed
Did you just start with 1 tbls? - 1 tbsp oatmeal and then added formula to the consistency we wanted. cereal didnt last long, he hated it. we moved to stage 1 fruits and veggies about a week later.
TIA!
as for the formula - up him. sounds like he needs it. formula is their #1 source of nutrition for the first 12 months. more important he gets that that cereal
