Starting solids at 3 months?
My DD is a very healthy almost 15 lb baby. I love love love my ped, but she is suggesting we start cereal this week since she is over the 14 lb mark.
She eats every 3 hours (I am nursing) and is doing a nice 8 hour stretch at night. She does not seem like she is overly hungry, whereas DD1 was starving all of the time.
I don't think it will be an issue when we tell her we want to wait. Just wanted to see what everyone else is doing these days, I know that the recommendation is 6 months. With DD1 we started at 4.
She is 12 weeks today, 3 months on 2/12.

Re: Starting solids at 3 months?
I personally would never. I nursed and my son was 14 lbs at 8 weeks old. I did not start solids until he was 6 months old at which point he was 22 lbs. Big babies don't necessarily need food earlier. Breastmilk is the main source of nutrition for the first year of life and anything else is really just practice. I personally wouldn't start before 6 months although I know many people feel comfortable starting earlier (4-5 months). I don't think I have ever heard of anyone starting at 3 months old. That is extremely early to me. Weight in not the sole deciding factor in when to start solids. There are other signs of developmental readiness that I do not believe a 3 month old child would exhibit.

Starting solids at 3 months?
What was her reasoning for starting solids? Just that is is over the 14lb mark? The AAP recomends exclusive breastfeeding for the first 6 months. I started DS at 5 1/2 just because he was showing interest (reaching for my spoon/food etc). I wouldn't start this early since their stomachs aren't fully developed to handle the food. You're giving her just want her body can process right now.

We started solids at 4 months. I think 3 months is too early.

Go with your gut. If baby is happy & healthy I dont see reason to change (yet).

Re: Starting solids at 3 months?
I think 3 mos is too early. My ped told me I could start my first 2 at 4 months, but they weren't really looking for it, so I put it off until about 6 months I think; and actually even later with DD#2, as she had a bad tongue thrust and wouldn't accept the spoon of food.

ITA! My guy was over 14 lbs by 1.5 months. That is no reason to start solids. We skip baby foods(start with soft table foods at 6-8 months old). All my babies were big and had no problems waiting on solids.

Re: Starting solids at 3 months?
DS2 just turned 5 months and is EBF. I haven't started solids yet. He too is quite healthy and weighed in at 18 lbs when he hit 4 months. He is just now starting to go 2.5 hrs between feedings. My ped actually told me to wait on the solids until the 6 months. She is pro-formula and FF her last 2 kids but BF her 1st two and she told me there is no need to give DS anything extra yet.
So, if you want to wait there is no reason why you shouldn't. Do what you are comfortable with. I'm waiting until DS is 6 months before I start with oatmeal, then barley, then veggies.
Just saw she's not even 3 months yet. I'd wait. BM has everything she needs.

Starting solids at 3 months?
I asked my ped about this. It should depend on your baby vs a specific set time. My Dd is 4 months and we are sitting her in her high hair now with a spoon. If she is showing interest at 5 and trying to eat every 2 hours bc she is hungry( I ebf) then we will go to solids. The dr explained the need for iron and as they get older breast milk just doesn't have the amount they need. At 3 months my dd couldn't really hold her head up for extended periods of time fully. I'd be nervous to give her solids for that reason.

Starting solids at 3 months?
I think that is too early. We tried my daughter with cereal around 4 or 5 months and it didn't work well for us, she had stomach issues with it. We ended up stopping and just holding off till shortly after 6 months and it went much better.

Starting solids at 3 months?
I started cereal at 4 months. It took about 3 weeks for him to adjust to the spoon. But, he was definitely showing interest when we started. From there we added vegetables and fruit.
By 6 months he was eating most of that and also some soft table foods.
You need to do what you are comfortable with.

Re: Starting solids at 3 months?
I just know that DS was a hungry baby and ate A LOT but he would not have been ready for cereal at 3 months. Even at 4.5 months he was still gagging. He was fine at 5 months, though. Every baby is different, though it's hard for me to imagine a baby being ready for solids at 3 months.

Starting solids at 3 months?
Im not a dr but 3 months seems way too young. I would wait until at least 5 months. And a lot of people wait until 6 months.
