STD and FMLA
How does it work If you are covered by STD? Do you take the STD then once that runs out you are entitled to the 12 weeks or does the STD overlap FMLA? I know I have to use all of my PTO during FMLA. I'm in NJ if that makes a diff.
Also does anyone know if I would be required to pay back any STD pay if I decide not to return to work ?
Thanks!

Re: STD and FMLA
I worked in NJ when my DD1 was born. I can't remember exactly what ran concurrently, but I had 18 weeks total. I think it was STD for 6 weeks, then the NJ family leave pay couldnt start until after that and then I took the rest of the time unpaid.
I didn't go back to work and didn't have to pay anything back. I actually got paid a couple days for unused PTO.

I think it depends on your job. I'm in NY and my job runs everything together so I get 12 weeks and that's it. If I have sick/vaca time I have to use it then and the STD runs during that time too. And in NY you have to return to work or you have to pay back the STD.

Re: STD and FMLA
I remembered a little better. The STD is for you while you are physically unable to work. The NJ family leave is 12 weeks for taking care of the new baby. Those two don't run concurrently. This was 3.5 years ago, so not sure if anything changed. If you live in NJ and work in ny, I don't think you're covered by njfla.

STD and FMLA
At my company STD and FMLA overlap.
I used one week of PTO (elimination period), 5 weeks of disability and the rest was PTO/unpaid.
I went back to work each time at 11 weeks to save some days for later on.

Re: STD and FMLA
Depends on your company's policy. STD and FMLA ran together pretty much at m ine... I had to use my vacation/sick during this time as well until it ran out so I ended up unpaid for nearly 6 weeks.
