Re: Stimulus ....do you qualify?
Family of three, we do not qualify under the hard cap the Senate Republicans insisted go in this relief bill. To be fair, both DH and I have remained fully employed throughout the pandemic. We have both been able to work from home.
Under both prior bills we received a reduced amount.
To the person who made the comment about long lines at Best Buy . . . . . if you have never been on welfare, or worked with people who survive on food stamps, please do not judge. These stimulus payment likely represent the most money they have ever had at one time in their adult lives. It is likely their only opportunity to make a big ticket purchase.
Put another way . . .

Family of 6. We qualify. No Best Buy purchases here. Dh was laid off in April and may and we had to take out of some retirement to get by. We made it though. It’s just nice to be able to get a little jump ahead.

That was me. I absolutely do have have any issue with anyone that truly needs the money. I fully believe that more money should be going to those who need it. My issue is that if you worked and did not have any hardship during the pandemic, which many people did not, they you should not be receiving the money. Give it to those who did.

I worked full time during the pandemic and my husband got unemployment while he was out of work but went back. When schools weren't opening full time, we had to make the decision to put our kids in a school that was, at a much higher cost. Can't work from home. I wouldn't assume things about people who worked not needing the money as many were faced with unexpected day care costs as well. Many low income families as well...

Nope we get nothing. We didn’t the previous times either. It’s just DH and I. While we both stayed employed, we did lose income.

Stimulus ....do you qualify?
we qualify.. we are lucky enough to have kept both of our jobs, and also lucky enough to have been able to contibute large percentages to our 403B's and 401K's, so our adjusted gross income was within the criteria. We didn't file our 2020 taxes yet, but I'm not sure we would have met based on 2020. Luckily, if you didn't yet file for 2020 and qualify based on 2019, you are OK and don't have to pay it back.
I agree with what many have said. Some people (like us) are getting money and it seems a bit odd that we are to be honest. Many of my coworkers didn't qualify and make the same salary as me, but they just don't contribute a high percentage to retirement like I did.
Either way, we are not "running to best buy"

They you wouldn't fall under the category I was speaking about. You had unforeseen costs directly because of the pandemic. There are also many people who had many unforeseen costs as well who made over the arbitrary salary threshold and they are getting nothing. Again, as I said in every thread regarding these stimulus checks, I have no issue if you had added costs or were put in a financial bind because of the pandemic. I have issue with the salary cap and also people receiving it that had no financial hardship.

Re: Stimulus ....do you qualify?
Nope and I have said before it’s bullshittt how they decided who gets its.
Should have been anyone who lost income no matter how much they make or it should have gone to everyone.
Also cap limits are stupid because so may factors have to be taken in with income. Other parts of the county have lower costs of living. Married couples taking care of no one else but themselves vs married couples who take care of someone else or have kids will have more money essentially cause they don’t have many expenses.
I am not well off and we pay a shittt load in taxes it’s disgusting! And yet somehow I don’t get any benefits of the free money everyone else is getting when some who have lost absolutely no income!! Not sure how that is right??!! I’m being “punished” for working hard and putting in my time to get higher salary which again is not that high especially for LI!

Stimulus ....do you qualify?
Part of the purpose of a “stimulus” check is to “stimulate” the economy. So, running to Best Buy to keep the workers employed and booking a vacation to keep the hotels running.

So I know our gross is over that cap but not sure about our adjusted gross. No idea what our adjusted gross is.
Your adjusted gross wooing be what you take home after any 401k contributions and health insurance you pay for as it comes out pre taxed

Yes, I think. I don’t live in the US, but I still get this.
ETA: and before you get angry, check what expats have to do for tax reasons.

We received a letter in the mail from The irs saying we should be expecting $1,200 total.
It’s just the 2 of us - no kids. Supposedly it said it was based off of 2019 tax return which is kinda BS because all of 2020 I had no job and DH closed the business for almost 2 months and struggled for a while to get it back up and running with half staff and covid rules in place.
I don’t know where they came up with $1,200. From $1,400 to $600 each? I won’t even try to figure it out. There are people who need it more than us
When did you get this letter? The stimulus just passed and was signed at the end of last week so that’s very strange. (I got a letter from the IRS recently but it was to confirm the last stimulus. That would make more sense since you probably would have gotten $1,200 from that one)
Also, if you’ve filed your 2020 return already the payment should be based on those numbers so you would be getting the full amount of $2,800.

We didn’t file 2020 yet. We wait til the lat possible second because we always owe

Yes ok. It's listed separately on the W2. I have to look. I swear when it comes to doing taxes and stuff like this I'm like a Stepford wife. My DH handles it and I just smile and wait to see what we owe or are getting back.

Don’t worry I wasn’t 100% sure what they considered adjusted and confirmed with my accountant

Re: Stimulus ....do you qualify?
Nope don't qualify. We lost one source of income in April of 2020 due to Covid and we still don't qualify even on the one remaining income.
We did benefit greatly on the unemployment though. Claiming since April of last year and we will continue to get it until September it looks like.
Going to probably bank over 50k in unemployment benefits after this is all said and done. So while we never seem to qualify for these stimulus checks due to income, it's nice to get something handed from the government for a change.

Stimulus ....do you qualify?
Our family of four qualifies. While we didn't lose income, this was the year we planned for me to go back to work since our kids would be settled in school full time. Instead they spent most of the year only in school 2 days a week so that wasn't happening. We have very little disposable income so we'll save some and spend some to do our part to stimulate the economy more than we usually do. We still can't afford a vacation so no worries there.

Re: Stimulus ....do you qualify?
We qualify. Family of 3 from NYC not LI. We won't be taking a vacation but DS will be going to Best Buy to get a switch which he has been asking for over two years and which he has earned after a year of "hybrid" learning and still keeping over a 95 average. DH and I will use $300 each for "fun" things- for me that means new glasses and maybe a book if there's anything leftover.
The rest of the money is going to pay off our credit card and car loan. At this point, i don't have enough money to pay off the car if anything were to happen to our jobs so I will gladly use this money to help pay that down.
DS also qualifies for the child credit. most of it will be going into his savings account for his future (college, house, wedding, etc.) and some of it will be staying in our checking for emergencies.

Re: Stimulus ....do you qualify?
We miss it by a little and honestly I am annoyed. What I have shelled out this last year in buying a new computer (our old one was so slow and my kids couldn’t use it for remote), a chromebook, extra toys to keep them busy, a ton of sensory toys for my autistic son, and a crap ton in extra $ for babysitting help for my youngest whose school is still hybrid and DH and I work (DH is fully remote and I am both in office and remote) is astronomical. We honestly cannot sustain this and while I feel lucky neither of us lost our jobs, neither of us are getting raises. Meanwhile all our expenses have gone up.

Stimulus ....do you qualify?
So anyone that lost income or has a lower AGI this year, if you file your taxes you will get as long as you file by 4/15 the IRS will send you another check for the remaining difference according to their website. Just wanted to put that out there

We qualified - because I only worked a portion of the year and DH had lower taxable income. If it was based on 2018 or 2020 we wouldn’t have qualified.
