Re: Stimulus package
Im just happy that they passed it without to much discussion..I wish it included more but I think that would of taken forever...I admit though that this is very self serving on my part, we qualify and we really need the money right now. It is going to help us out tremendously at a time when we really need it...

Re: Stimulus package
Exactly what is this suppose to do?
The government is giving us back money that they don't have. Our soldiers don't have the proper equipment. National security $$$ is being cut. Our national debt will continue to go up and the amount of $$$ is not really going to change any of our lives. If a CEO tried to do this his business would go belly up. I just don't get it. If someone can make it make sense I would appreciate it.

i don't know if you ladies missed this and a few posters brought this up, this is a credit against when you go to file next year...
so its not free money, just borrowed against next year... If it turns out your 2008 income was lower than in 2007 and you should have gotten a lower rebate, you get to keep the difference.

Re: Stimulus package
I agree, $150,000 is not a miniscule amount, and people earning this really don't need the extra cash as badly as someone earning say, $35,000.
But what bugs me about these guidelines is this: this region is pricey to live in and while $150,000 will serve you quite well in some parts of the country, it doesn't go as far here. But then, I guess it would take forever to set up regional guidelines.
The other thing that I don't like about this package is it does nothing to address the long term ills of our economy. There may be a brief boost, but that's it. When the money is gone, all the same problems will still be there. And this won't help people who can barely pay their bills much.

Someone explain something to me, how is LI so much more expensive than, let's say, NYC?
$150K is definitely not 'living in the lap of luxury' but I hardly think a family making that $ or more should be struggling to put food on the table either. I'm not trying to put down anybody's situation, but people need to live up to their means and not above it.
ITA with you! seems like a lot of ppl here on LI spend more than they can afford on a home, lease crazy cars, and that's why 150,000 isn't enough for them.

We qualify and we NEED the money so bad. This, combined with our tax refund, will be such a huge relief to us this year!

depending on how much you make over the set amount, you can still receive money back, just not the full amount that others are getting back..

"If you're going to buy, buy American The whole point of these checks is ostensibly to keep the U.S. from sliding into a recession. Buying more stuff made in China won't accomplish that end. In fact, it will make our already mind-blowing trade deficit even worse.
So no plasma TV for you, bucko. If you care about the U.S. economy, buy an Oreck vacuum, a Speed Queen washer or dryer, a Whirlpool dishwasher or an Amana fridge. Or plan a nice little getaway somewhere local, so you're spending on food, services and lodging that will keep the money in the U.S. rather than on foreign oil."
what about using it towards a Toyota? it's a Japanese car, but it's made in KY.
or a Honda - a Japanese car that's made in OH.

It's not. Living in NYC (and in saying NYC, I mean Manhattan), is more expensive...

Re: Stimulus package
I'll say it again. We CHOOSE to live in the NYC Metro area. No one is forcing us. We CHOOSE lto live somehwere with a high cost of living. Apparently there are trade-offs that make it worthwhile for us, but we can't expect congress or anyone else to cry the blues for us because we have chosen and expensive place to live.

Not sure of Honda, but Toyotas made and sold in America are produced by Toyota USA. Only the Scion is made by Toyota Japan. The engineers, designers and builders are all part of Toyota USA.

http://money.cnn.com/2008/02/08/pf/taxes/rebates_what_you_need_to_know/index.htm?cnn=yes
this is the important part: Do I have to pay the rebate back?
No. And here's why.
Your rebate is a one-time tax cut - an advance on a credit you'll receive on your 2008 return.
It's based on your 2007 income initially. If it turns out that your 2008 income and number of children would have qualified you for a larger rebate than the one you received, you'll be sent the difference. If it turns out your 2008 income was lower than in 2007 and you should have gotten a lower rebate, you get to keep the difference.
"If you were supposed to receive a larger payment than you did, you will get the extra money," said Treasury spokesman Andrew DeSouza. "If you received more than what you should have gotten, you will not be penalized."
so basically, you are getting this year what you WOULD HAVE gotten next year, unless you are entitled to more next year, at which time you'll get the difference. it's like an advance on your tax refund.
thanks for the clarification babyboy.

that's actually an excellent purchase. You are keeping the salesperson employed by providing him with a sale. Trickles down throughout the company. That salesperson will pay their bills with it or buy something..etc..
It's a direct hit. Buying something local will help the local economy.
