Stool Withholding & Potty Training...UPDATE
DS 1 has been having withholding issues on & off since DS 2 was born (almost 16 months ago). It seems to be getting bad again, and we have an appointment with a specialist.
I had planned to take a week off from work (well, work from home anyway) so that DS 1 & I could work on Potty Training in a few weeks. I am sure the Dr will give us some information, but I'd like to hear from anyone who can give us first-hand experiences.
TIA!
**** UPDATE: We visited the specialist yesterday. She was very thorough, and gave a great exam. She explained that there are different levels of potty behaviour, but that there is a certain severity of stool withholding that warrants attantion. DS falls into that category, as it is affecting not only his behaviour, but also his ability to absorb nutrients as well. He also is displaying signs of damaging reflux because of it. Since there is a demostrated need for medical attention, we agreed to try some different treatments. One of which was a laxative regiment daily. I personally will not do this, but we also saw a nutritionist, and are going to see a specialist in withholding. She also stated that we probably cannot even begin potty training for at least 6 months or more.

Re: Stool Withholding & Potty Training...advice needed
My DD did this for a while after she had been potty trained for a long time. Our dr. recommended just ignoring it. We were wary about that advice, but we decided to follow it and eventually, she just stopped. It's a battle for control, so the more we doted on it, the worse it got. Once we stopped saying anything, it went back to normal in a couple of weeks.

Our issue happened while potty training, though DD had pooped sporadically on the potty before. Our daycare provider gave the same exact advice- to ignore it. We'd been lecturing/chastising/bribing and nothing worked. But within a week or so of not acknowedging it (beyond cleaning her up) she began using the potty to poop.

I agree with the APs about ignoring it. As tough as it will be, that is what will work. Typically children do it for attention...

Agreed. And the more you obsess about it the more they do. Just let nature take its course.

Re: Stool Withholding & Potty Training...UPDATE
I have been battling with Jack not going on the toilet for the last few days. He has gone previously so I was confused. I was going to talk to my ped about this during the week.
M - glad that you got some answers and hopefully things will become more regular now!
