Stupid Question about Convertible Car Seats and Traveling...

So, I'm reading all the different threads on convertible carseats and realizing that Jordan is coming out of the infant carrier sooner than later. Our snugride only goes up to 29 inches and he's at 28 inches at 8 months old! I will SO miss the infant carrier and just switching it back and forth between cars!

Anyhow, what are you supposed to do with a convertible carseat when you travel? Are you supposed to take it out of the car and bring it on the plane with you, etc? Do you have it professionally re-installed when it goes back in your car? I know these are dumb questions - just getting ready for the next step.

Thanks!

You can gate check it like you did with the infant seat when you fly, or if DC has their own seat, you can sue it on the plane.

As for professional installation - it's up to you. We've taken our base out numerous times but, we only had it professionally installed in the beginning (I made sure we learned how to do it properly so we wouldn't have to go back).

I have an extra one that we keep in case my parents have the boys and I use that one for traveling. I always have the seats professionally installed no matter what.

We take it out of the car and gate check it when flying. Then DH installs it in whatever car we're using and then re-installs it in our car when we get home.

We brought it on the plane - it was awesome! We got Loey his own seat and he slept the entire time.

I also got this attachment that makes your convertible seat into basically rolling luggage... so we rolled Loey around the airport in that.

With the LATCH system, the carseats are super easy to install in the car, and using the lap belts aren't too bad on the plane either!

Thank you, ladies. Jess - did you have them professionally installed down here the first time they went in? Where did you go? So few places seem to do it down hereChat Icon

Height limits are not absolute, a rear facing infant or convertible seat is not outgrown until there is 1" or less of hard shell above their head or if they have exceeded the weight limit.

Children grow at different rates, if your 28" baby has a very long torso, he may actually already have outgrown the seat. If he's very leggy, he may not even be close to outgrowing it.

No, DH followed the instructions and had his brother and dad check to make sure it was tight enough.

Thanks so much for this! I will definitely check it out next time he's in it - his length definitely seems to be in his legs!
