Sucker or Samaritan?
Last night while I was out, I had a very destitute individual walk up to me (with a newborn) and tell me that she was pretty far from home and didn't have a ride. She was wondering if I could possibly give her a ride to her house. As much as I wanted to help, you don't know who to trust nowadays (even with a baby). But as a Mom (with my baby with me) it pulled at my heart that she looked soo bad off. So instead of giving her a ride, I offered to call her a cab and pick up the tab. She looked stunned that I would do that for her. I just told her to take care of herself (as she got in the cab) and to get her baby home (wherever that may have been - I can't even imagine based on her condition). It bothered me the whole night; thinking of that baby.
When I got home and told hubby the story, he just and called me a sucker. He thinks I got played. My thought is if she was trying to play me, she would have outright asked for cash instead of just trying to get a ride to wherever. Regardless, I feel like "I" did the right thing. If it was just her, I don't think I would be as benevolent, but the whole baby factor pushed me over the edge

Samaritan, definitely. If she was after money, she would have asked for cash, like you said.

Re: Sucker or Samaritan?
Are you now in the poor house for helping her? I am sure not - and I bet what you did meants somuch more to her than the $$ for the cab meant to you.
You did the right thing and God bless you - it give us faith in humanity again.

You did the right thing. Sometimes we just have to trust people. Imagine how you would feel today if you had left her there and not helped.

Re: Sucker or Samaritan?
I probably would have done the same thing. It's better knowing that you got her on her way home. There are many weird things that could happen in this world. Choosing to lay out a few bucks could have saved you in the long run....

Re: Sucker or Samaritan?
first of all, would you put yourself and your baby in danger by getting in the car with a stranger? thats where it sounds fishy.
do you remember the man at the gas station on the Belt Parkway that helped a family whos car broke down, baby and all, and they killed him?
Anyway, by maintaining your safety, you totally DID THE RIGHT THING
Scam or not, you kept yourself out of possible harm, and thats worth more than the cab money you gave her

Samaritan! If she hadn't gotten into the cab and just wanted to take the fare, that would be a different story. You did a wonderful thing for someone in need.

OMG!
Samaritan - you did the right thing. If you had just left her, I bet you would feel guilty and awful now. Hopefully she was being truthful

if YOU felt better about what you did, it doesn't matter her intention. YOURS were in the right place...you are a great person for doing what you did. that is awesome!

I totally agree with this.
If she was a college student in Commack asking for money, then I'd say you'd been suckered.

I think you did the right thing no matter which way you look at it. You didn't put yourself in harms way but you helped someone else out that you thought was in need! To me, that is a Samaritan!

You did a very good thing.
I would rather err on the side of being a sucker, than thinking that I could have helped her and done nothing. It would have eaten away at me for days.
There are a lot of people in the world who have no one to help them and we sometimes forget that.

Re: Sucker or Samaritan?
I think you did the right thing. I think you would have felt horrible had you done nothing. Either way, if it was $20, big deal. It won't kill you and you don't feel guilty. You bought yourself a guilt-free evening, that's all.

Re: Sucker or Samaritan?
You did the right thing....that was a good choice to make.
Same thing happened to me a few weeks ago..well, it was a young woman (around my age) ..she was wandering around my neighborhood and flagged down our car..I thought something was wrong but when we pulled up to her, she asked us for $$ to take the train to Summit (NJ)..she was very well dressed. My DH thought she was a scammer so he said sorry cant help ya and pulled away. I prob would have given her $5 or something. But you never know. It just makes me think, what if I ever had an emergency situation? I am a "normal" person, but would anyone else know that?

Re: Sucker or Samaritan?
What IF you chose not to help her? She may have had a weapon, the baby may have be stolen or dozens of other things could have gone wrong. I would give up the $10 just to make the individual go away.
As for the lady asking for train fare....if I was at Penn Station I may have given her $5 but if she randomly came up to my car, no way I would have even stopped.

I agree. Who know's if this girl was legit. But what's for certain is that the only bad thing that came out of this situation is that you have $20 less in your wallet. Considering all possible alternatives, it was a good decision and quick thinking on your part.
I have a hard time trusting anyone these days. DH and my mom think I'm paranoid. But just watch one night of news on TV, and you can see where all that paranoia comes from.

I never heard that story - holy cow!!
I remember about a year or so ago, I broke down (on the way into Nassau to a LIW GTG) and I was seriously screwed. It was raining and I had no cash, no cellphone and no stroller (DH was OOT). I also broke down in not the best of areas. I looked like a trainwreck because I was going to get dressed for the GTG at my Mom's, so I was basically wearing PJ's. I didn't know what I was going to do, so I started hiking (carrying the baby, my duffle bag, the diaper bag and my purse) the two or so miles to the phone. An angel in a BMW came along with his son. He offered me a ride. I was extremely hesistant but faced with horrendous circumstances, I got in. If he didn't have a toddler in the car, no way would I have gotten in. I think I stood on the side of the road debating my decision for a good 15 or so minutes. I have never put myself in that sort of scenario again.
I can't get that baby out of my head

Re: Sucker or Samaritan?
I've always believed that situations and people like this are sent into our lives as tests of our character and how willing we are to help a fellow human being who is less fortunate than ourselves. It does not matter if she was legitimate or not; the point is that you found it in your heart to help someone else. I would say you passed the test with flying colors and made God smile.
