Swaddling - Update and Advice Needed
My DS is almost 4 months and has been swaddled since birth in the miracle blanket. He has been doing so well with it and was sleeping great. However, the past 4 nights he has been waking up a lot and when I go check on him he has broken out of the swaddle. I don't know what is happening first the waking and fussing and getting out of the swaddle or if he is getting out in his sleep and waking himself up. I have to reswaddle and then he falls back asleep. Anyway, for any BTDT moms who stopped swaddling, do you think this is his way of letting me know its time to break the habit? I am just so scared he won't sleep without it. I tried to stop once before and it was a disaster. TIA!!!
Update - So on Thursday night I tried one arm out and he was up every hour. So for the past 2 nights I have just been going cold turkey in a sleep sac and still up every hour. Do you think he is just not ready?? I don't really want to give up because then these 3 nights were a waste but he has been so exhausted and so am I!! I am just looking for any advice. He was waking a few times a night getting out of the swaddle but this is crazy!!

Re: Swaddling
I think its time to try it without the swaddle... good luck!
This is exactly how my son was when we decided to stop swaddling and he slept just fine without it.

Re: Swaddling
For my DD it was around the same time that she also started waking up in the middle of the night. I wasn't sure if the wiggling woke her up or the arms coming out woke her up. I started leaving one arm out, then both arms but still swaddled her body with the "swaddle me". I think after 1.5 weeks she was sleeping fine again. I just took it as the sign that she was ready to not be swaddled!

Ditto!
The same thing was happening with my DD at around 5 months old so I just stopped cold turkey and she did great! I think the wiggling and breaking out of the swaddle was what was waking her up at night. I thought the first night without the swaddle was going to be terrible but it wasn't. I actually think she slept better.
Good Luck!

Re: Swaddling
My DS did this at around 3mo. I figured this was his way of letting me know he was done with the swaddle... He was also rolling over at that point, so I didn't think it was a good idea to continue. We stopped cold turkey one night and that was when he started rolling onto his belly to sleep. He was more comfy that way and started STTN. I would try to break the swaddling habit. Good Luck!

Re: Swaddling
My DD started rolling over at 4 months, so I decided to stop swaddling, which petrified me since she was sleeping so great with it! I tried going cold turkey one night and that was a disaster! For the last two weeks I have been gradually getting her out of the swaddle which seems to be working. First I just loosened it a little. Then I did a few nights with one arm out, then a few with both arms out. I am now at the stage where she just has it loosely around her body. Hopefully this weekend we will be swaddle free!

Re: Swaddling - Update and Advice Needed
My boys were born with superman strength, at a week old (2 months premature) they started breaking out of the NICU swaddle.
Once home we tried several different blankets and swaddles (anais, miracle etc) the only thing that worked (most times) was the halo swaddle with velcro. it sort of looks like a straight jacket but my boys love it. It gives enough room for the legs to wiggle and kick (hip dysplasia, spell?) but tight around the arms to feel secure. It was a lifesaver. It also gives options to wear as just a blanket or to swaddle under the arms, if you want the arms free. You can test it all out, it really is trial and error with each baby. Hope you find something that works !
GL!

Re: Swaddling - Update and Advice Needed
My girls also broke out of the nicu swaddle. We call it the nicu swaddle because those nurses are SO good at it. We now have them in their pj's, swaddle them, and then use a swaddle pod over the swaddle. It is made by summer infant. I'm concerned for when they out grow it.
At a bfeeding group I go to other moms were talking about doing a double swaddle. literally wrapping them twice

Re: Swaddling - Update and Advice Needed
My dd was just one of those kids that needed to be swaddled to sleep. She didn't sleep with out it till after 7 months. SHE LOVED IT! My mother thought I was being cruel, then I went to stay with her and she said the swaddle was like an off switch on my dd, because she relaxed immediately.
We used the Halo swadlers and the woombie. GL!
