My son is still young - 4 - but I will always supervise him in the pool. He just mastered the diving board and slide at the pool, but I am still not 100% confident in his swimming ability. Because of that, I am always in the pool with him within arms reach. When he is better at swimming, I will supervise from the side of the pool.

I lifeguarded for 10 years (4 years in a supervisory position) and I will say there are amazing and then just ok lifeguards so you need to be watching your kid at all times! I don't know if people remember, but my son almost drowned during swim lessons since neither the instructor nor lifeguard on duty saw him go underwater!!

Good example of how a lifeguard isn't foolproof - I was at a kid's bday party at a backyard pool and they had hired a lifeguard. I was still a nervous wreck because there were SO many kids and SO many floating toys that if a kid was on the bottom, it would be hard to see him or her. So I was watching DD like a hawk anyway.
Next thing you know some of the moms go running over to the deep end.
Apparently one of the younger kids jumped in the deep end without her life vest on.
Now the lifeguard had no way of knowing or keeping track of which kids needed life vests and which didn't. So she was clueless to what just happened.
Luckily someone who knew that child didn't belong in there without a vest on saw it.
It's just scary

And this is one of the main reasons why public pools do not allow toys in the pool. Too much distraction. And also why they don't want things hung on fences and such. They want to have clear lines of sight with as little distractions as possible.

Re: Swimming Pools - Safety Questions

I just saw this on Stringer News

Centereach, NY- Town of Brookhaven lifeguards successfully revived a 6 year old girl who was found unresponsive at the bottom of the Town Pool just after 5pm today. She was taken to Stony Brook Hospital and is in stable condition.

Nothing replaces direct supervision of your kids! Thank god she is in stable condition!
