switching from DOE to LI- summer pay

Do you still get paid all summer and retain your health benefits throughout the summer in the DOE if you switch to a LI job starting Sept?

I'm probably not going to tell my principal that I am leaving until 30 days before the school year starts, but if I were to tell her at the end of this school year, I just want to make sure I will still be getting my paychecks and retaining my benefits until I start in Sept.

You should get your summer checks. You earned the money; our salaries are just paid out over the course of a calendar year. You are waiving your retro pay.

Not sure re: health insurance. Contact your union rep.

Yes you will have everything over the summer.

You are on payroll until 9/1.

You need to contact your rep but off the top of my head I can tell you I was told to give 30 days notice by email - so it's date stamped - before the first day teachers report.

So August 7th (or whatever.)

You MUST give 30 days notice. The woman at Nassau BOCES told me this and it was corroborated by a few others. You can lose your license if you don't.

Personally I wouldn't say a word before that but that's just me.

Congrats!!

Great thank you- I plan on waiting until 30 days before exactly, and then I will call her and let her know that I will not be returning. I just want to be 100% sure that I will have my benefits and pay until 9/1, because my due date is 7/21 and I want to make sure the baby is under my insurance until we switch over. We can always switch under Dh's insurance, but I'd rather not have to

As an admin, please don't wait to do this. You can submit your paperwork at the end of June to HR with an effective date of 9/1. The longer you wait to let them know you are leaving the harder it is to fill your spot with a quality teacher. Open Market closes in August so depending on when you submit to HR it may be past the time for another DOE teacher (who may be desperate to change schools) to take because your spot can't be filled before Open Market closes and their principal blocks the transfer. Conversely, you run the risk of kind of screwing over your co-workers because there's always the chance that an ATR with more seniority will get the position because all of the fresh from college teachers got picked up in July. Submit the paperwork at the end of June, effective 9/1 and you will be on payroll and healthcare until 9/1.

ETA: Until HR gets the letter of resignation from you you will remain on budget. Even if your principal had wind that you were leaving they couldn't fill the spot because there's no way to staff someone with that money. Because it's attached to you. If that makes sense.

Yes this all makes sense and answers all of my questions.. I really love my principal right now and was conflicted about what to do. I don't want to upset her and don't want to cause bad blood between us, especially in the event that I ever need to return back to the DOE..

So if I told my principal, what is preventing her/the admin. asst in my building from contacting HR and informing them? Is there any way she could cancel all of the benefits and summer pay on me?

No, you have to write a letter of resignation. It has to be faxed/emailed to the HR person at your borough support center. In the letter you state you are resigning your position effective 9/1/16. That will ensure that you stay on medical. You get July and August pay because you worked your contracted dates of 9/8-6/28.

No one. No one. No one. Can cancel your summer pay or medical. No one but can resign your position. I had a teacher who actually moved OOS the day school closed in June. She would not send a letter of resignation. Out of spite. We all knew she was leaving but she was on the budget and we couldn't replace her. We lost 2 good potential hires because we couldn't official hire them. And no amount of crying or begging HR could change that until she herself sent the letter.
