Switching RE- need recs

I'm really not happy with the RE and their office staff. They don't answer the phone or return phone calls. Right now i'm going to RS Stonybrook and i was thinking about ECF (my mother used one of the doctors years ago before anyone knew what it was- unfortunately it didn't work).
I was thinking about switching to a new office. Is that a bad idea?

Are all offices pretty much the same? Does anyone else have any doctor recommendations?

ETA maybe this is just the IUI failure 'talking' but isn't it about comfort level? I wasn't happy especially the last few appointments/weeks.

Re: Switching RE- need recs

My office is pretty good at phone calls & emails (I go to RMA). They will return a phone call typically in a few hours... if they can't answer you immediately. I prefer to email them... because it usually is faster. It IS important to have good communication.

The only problem with switching (in my opinion) is that you will probably go to a different "plan" especially if you have issues. BUT that could be a benefit.

I found (personally) that if I found a quiet time to call my MD and talk about what he thought "failed", what he thought was a good idea & what he would do as a next step, as well as my insurance issues (annual cap)...we were able to work out a nice plan together... I hope it'll continue.

BTW. It really does STINK to have an IUI not work. Sorry. Hang in there! Chat Icon

Re: Switching RE- need recs

That is where I started out too. They had me doing IUI's and on the 3rd clomid IUI, I was kinda ready to move on. They wouldn't even talk to me about anything but what was written in my chart, which was that I was supposed to do 4 before we'd discuss any further action. And I was like...aren't I paying you? And then it turns out that because of my uterus situation I should never have been put on clomid to begin with. Oh joy!

They were very convenient for me too. I live way out east. I now go to GC or NYC. But, you do what you have to do. And its only inconvenient for 1 wk where you have to go every morning. Best to go where you are comfy and happy. I would set up some interviews with some other RE's and see which place fits you.

Re: Switching RE- need recs

I am having the same problem with them. They just seem like they are always bothered by questions, and impatient (the staff) I think the receptionist are down right rude. By the way I do love the doctor it really is just the office staff.

I don't know if its the doctors office or the staff or both. I admit i can be a little high maintenance at times and i'm stressing myself out more than necessary. But i know this is something i need to be comfortable with.

The problem is that we went in and weren't really prepared properly to begin with. I had no clue what was going on (and was told they told us in the beginning -when they didn't mention anything) plus it all happened so fast (which might not be a bad thing but still). I guess it was all due to timing with my 'non-cycle'.

We had decided to start with IUI and told them from the beginning (so we thought) and the doctor said she had it written down that we would just have the meds and BD on our own. That was fixed quickly and we still did IUI. Also, they said they would call to let me know about a blood test and left me to hang. And when i asked them all they said was "well we don't always call when there's nothing we can do." That's really not what i want to hear. If you tell me your going to call then CALL!

Everytime i call around 3 no one ever answers even though i know that they are in the office until 8. Maybe they shut off the phones but the message should say something about it.

Maybe i'm just being silly?

It's funny becuse they were sooooo nice the first time i called and went in back in july. It was hard trying to figure it all out because of my husbands schedule (he works nights). They were patient.

After that it just went downhill.

The other thing I have a hard time with is that I think they feel like I should know how everything works already. I actually said last time I was there that this was the first time I was doing this. They looked at me like I had two heads. If it weren't for this website I'd be completely lost.

I go to ECF is Plainview. I think the staff is very nice and helpful and they always answer the phone. They have early morning hours starting at 6:30am weekdays, so I am able to go in for my monitoring and still make it in the NYC on time. I am happy with them.

It's funny because i was originally thinking of going here since its much closer to me than Stonybrook but they said they were only there until 3 which was a problem for me and essentially why i went with Stonybrook.

Re: Switching RE- need recs

OK, wanted to chime in one more time.

See the staff was always so nice to me (but i am the type of person that has to say hello to everyone etc...its the old trying to avoid them spitting in my food type of thing...LOL). But, they definitely would forget to tell me what I was to do next.

And truthfully, I had just turned 39 and had a m/c when I walked in their door. Actually, I was pregnant when I consulted with them, I just didn't know it at the time. But, that ended quickly and I went right back to them. And because of that they started to tell me to do clomid with timed BDing if I wanted. And I was like "HELLO - I'm 39, lets get on with it". Then they decided I had scar tissue in my uterus, which I didn't and wasted more time doing a lap/hysto (but at least it ruled out a lot of other possible problems, so somewhere along the way I would have done this but maybe I just needed a hysto not the full lap thing). I think they were going to have me doing about 8 IUI's before they would move on. They wouldn't even talk to me about IVF. Which was odd, especially for my age. If it wasn't for my IRL friend going through the same thing and way ahead of me in 2 months, I would have still been there. Plus, their stats for women my age were terrible for IVF.

Seems like they just do the same routine to everyone regarless of age or situation.

I don't think they are horrible, they have gotten many women pregnant, but I think it you are beyond the norm they really don't know how to handle that.

I finally went to Center for human reproduction in NSUH saw DR SCHOLL and I was PG in my first cylce! The drive is far and that sux but it was all worth it I am now 10 wks pg with twins. If you would like anyore info FM me but i totally recommend you switching.

Re: Switching RE- need recs

I can recommend my RE, but I will tell you in advance - everyone is going to recommend the RE that got them PG.
I went to LI-IVF and saw Dr. Kenigsberg. I loved him, he was very straightforward and didn't beat around the bush.
I started at RSNY and hated them.

But, I will also say that one IUI may not be enough to judge - unless you don't particularly like the Drs. and staff (that was my problem with RSNY). Just know that an IUI only increases your chances by approx. 10% over natural methods.

Re: Switching RE- need recs

Unfortunately Dr Braverman isn't on my insurance so he's not an option at all. I made an appointment with ECF in Plainview this morning. The woman i spoke with was extremely nice. Unfortunately because its a consultation i was a little limited due to my schedule but that's ok.

I'm going around when my next cycle should start which since i've already done a lot of the testing should help.
