Switching to foward facing
So, I'm a big supporter of rear facing as long as possible. DD1 sat rear facing until she was 3, never had an issue. DD2 screams bloody murder in the car. It is extremely distracting trying to concentrate. This morning my dad picked her up and used his car which has a forward facing convertible that DD1 used. She screamed in my car all the way to meet my dad and he then put her in his car. He said she made not a peep!
I'm wondering if she hates to sit rear facing? She's just about 18 months! I'm not ready to switch her. I was planning on keeping her rear as long as DD1, but I can't listen to her screaming anymore!
ETA- She's 25 lbs.

I would wait until at least 2 if you can. I don't like the thought of switching them before 2 years old at the min.

I agree 100%. The screaming is getting to be way too much!

I hear ya. And if she was like 23 months I'd say, go for it. I just feel 18 months is still too young regardless of screaming. But I know, it sucks. DD used to scream so bad in her infant seat. From day 1 Awful

Switching to foward facing
I agree to keep a child rear facing as long as possible. But a screaming child is a distraction itself and could cause an accident. And so for that reason, I would probably switch if it continues.

No I think it's 1. The recommendation is 2 though...at least in NY I do remember reading something about NJ making it the law to RF until 2 years old. Maybe?

NJ. A state senator introduced a bill in NY but I don't know if it went through or not. I contacted my state senator asking him to support it via email and fb but I didn't get a response and my post on his fb page was deleted.

Switching to foward facing
I was in the same boat as you. It is easy for people to tell you not to switch your kid when they are not living with a child who screams relentlessly in the car.
My DS would literally scream from the moment we put him in his carseat until the moment we took him out. We endured HOURS of constant screaming when traveling to visit our family on LI and in Boston. It was TERRBILE. We tried everything to soothe him and nothing worked. The screaming was definitely a HUGE distraction and a safety issue. We were definitely at a higher risk to get in an accident with him rear facing and screaming.
We turned him at about 22 months and maybe 28 pounds. Once we switched him, he stopped crying. I no longer dread driving.

Switching to foward facing
Have you tried a mirror or giving him/her some toys or something to play with.
If the screaming is becoming truly distracting than I would be inclined to switch. If it's just annoying I'd probably deal with it. Rear facing is safest but you can not be driving around town distracted it's dangerous to yourself, your child and others.

I wouldn't switch at that age. I would wait to at least 2 or at least close to it. The thought of internal decapitation is far more terrifying than screaming in the seat.
This is just one of those times that you have to deal with it for the safety of your child. IMO.

Re: Switching to foward facing
I would switch because I think the distraction of a kid screaming is more likely to distract and God Forbid something happening than a peaceful card ride and a what if.

If you don't have a mirror, try it out. My son doesn't mind sitting rear facing because he can see us in the mirror and thinks it's funny.

Unfortunately in NY it is not a law yet but it should be.
In NJ its a law and I think i read in PA they made it a law now too.
Weight/height has nothing to do if a child is ready for forward face (of course weight/height matters in terms of case seat limitations I.e some car seats you can rear face till 41lbs while others might be 55lbs) it has to do with their bone development.

Switching to foward facing
I would try a mirror first (although it is not recommended by car seat safety specialists because in an accident the mirror can become a projectile) and if that does not help I would turn her forward facing- A distracted driver is at higher risk of getting into an accident.

I'd leave her rear facing and try giving her toys, snacks, whatever to distract her. G-d forbid you get into an accident, she's at a higher risk for more serious injuries if she's forward facing.

Re: Switching to foward facing
I would switch.
Yes... It's not ideal. But the new recommendations are really new. My DS and DD were both forward facing before a year. Yes, we got into a car accident where the other car was totaled (she was texting and rear ended us). My kids in car seats didn't even wake up... And the older one was 18 mo front facing. With #3, I have her rear facing at over a year. I will do it for as long as I can...
I think a kid screaming, a mom reaching to give kid things, watching a kid in a baby mirror, giving kids food or talking on the phone is MUCH more dangerous as it causes distracted drivers more likely to get into accidents.

Switching to foward facing
I am on the same boat as you!! DD is 16 months and she is miserable in the car. She screams bloody murder. Yesterday I had to pull over on the highway twice to calm her down because she was screaming so much. I finally gave her a video to watch on my phone and it calmed her down. Honestly, I'd love to hold off until she's at least 18 months before switching her. She's very distracting and I agree with PP, between the screaming, reaching back to give her something, and pulling over that in itself poses a danger also. You gotta do what you think is best! I just wanted to tell you I'm going through the same thing.

This. And before someone says it's easy for others to say this when they don't have a child who screams, I had a child who screamed bloody murder in the car. I tuned it out. I played the radio louder. It wasn't a distraction. God forbid you get in an accident and they are FF too small. I saw a video once on what happens and it was horrifying. After watching that I didn't have any more fuckss to give about screaming.
ETA- it's already the law in NJ. And hopefully will be soon in NY too. So then it won't have to be a question anymore.

I'm also going to add a few things 1- it has nothing to do with height or weight. Their necks and skulls do not fuse together until he age of 2. Prior to it fusing, if there is an accident they can be internal decapitated 2-for everyone saying the screaming is distracting and it's safer to have a ff quiet child than a distracting screaming rf child. Ok, so you ff face and you can drive in peace...now what happens when a teen texting slams into your car headon?
I've also had those moments when dd1 would scream bloody murder, arch her back and refuse to get into her seat. I couldn't care less. She's getting in, rf be that's what is best for her.

I agree with both posts.
I turn the radio up, yell and scream back, pull over if I need to.

Does she have the same car seat in both cars? It might be the seat and not the direction.
