Talk me off the ledge
This morning when I went to walk my dog she went straight towards my car. I bent down to look and there was a rabbit hiding by my back tire. He tried to move but I could see he was dragging his back legs. I started calling animal rescues and I was referred to a vets office who told me to bring it in. I had two of my dads landscapers wrap the bunny in a towel and put it in my puppy carrier. The problem with that was, the bunny was screaming. I didn't even know rabbits could make the noise this poor thing was making. I was automatically in tears. I brought the rabbit to the vet and they took it back. So,done came out to talk to me and they said the rabbits back is broken. There's nothing they could do so they were putting it down. I was hysterical. I don't know why I'm so devastated over this. This was a wild animal, not my own personal pet. But I just can't seem to settle down and stop crying. Please somebody tell me I'm being ridiculous. I don't know why I can't calm down.

Re: Talk me off the ledge
You are NOT being ridiculous at all! If I was in your position I would feel exactly the same way! It's very sad to see any life come to an end. The only silver lining is that this poor bunny must have been suffering so badly and they won't have to be in that pain anymore. Sorry you had to go through that.

Yes this. I'm getting upset just reading this and I wasn't even involved like you were. When you are an animal lover, something like this is very upsetting! Even seeing a dead animal on the side of the rode gets me upset. You did the right thing- more than others would have done. So sad....

This. You did the right thing and helps him by bringing him in and putting him down.
You're upset because you're human. I would be the same way.
My dog killed a bunny in my yard over a month ago and I'm still not over it. By the time I found him w the bunny, it was already Dead. I was hysterical over this poor animal and couldn't look at my dog for a while. He was excited and thought he did a good thing (min pins are bred to be ratters, so he literally was doing what he is meant to do)
So I totally get the heartbreak for the poor thing.

Talk me off the ledge
You are not being ridiculous at all. I know that I would feel the same way as you, as I'm a huge animal lover. The rabbit was clearly in a tremendous amount of excruciating pain and while the end result of being put down was not what you imagined would happen when you brought it in to the vet, that animal is now in peace and pain-free. Had you left it, who knows what would have happened to it and how long it would have had to live in agony.

You are absolutely justified in feeling this way, I would be reacting the same way. It's so sad to see any animal suffering, but you did the right thing

I understand why you are sad.
You did a great thing for the bunny and helped him end his suffering.

Oh that's terrible, of course you're upset!! It's not much consolation but at least you know you did a good thing and ended it's suffering.

I agree. You did your absolute best and now the bunny is no longer suffering. The poor thing could have suffered for hours, all day long, terrified and vulnerable - but you did the best thing.
If it makes you feel better, my best friend is a vet tech with over a decade of experience and I know she would agree that you did the absolute best thing for the little guy. Please let that give you some peace.
Hugs!!!

Talk me off the ledge
Something similar happened to me when I was in HS. I was on my way to my then BFs house and saw some cats playing with a ball of fluff on the side of the road. I went closer and saw it was a baby bunny and its back leg was broken and twisted up behind its body. I wrapped it up and took it to a local vet. I had to leave it there but kept calling from home to check on it. I don't know what I thought they were going to do with its leg so badly injured but I was so sad when they told me they put it to sleep.

Talk me off the ledge
You are not ridiculous at all. I would have reacted the same exact way. Think of it this way, if it wasn't for you it would still be laying somewhere in horrific pain which would never go away. Who knows how long it would had to have suffered like that. It sucks but it's what was best for him. Hope you're feeling better soon.

Sending hugs! You're not ridiculous, your kind hearted. I would've reacted simiarly. It's so tough to see any creature or person in pain. Kudos to you for doing your best to help the bunny!

You aren't being ridiculous but know that you did THE best thing you could have done for the bunny and that they were in pain and scared before you came along!

Re: Talk me off the ledge
I have been there! With baby mice no less!
Two years ago; A mouse had a nest during the winter season; and had babies in my husbands tractor. They had fallen out on the grass when he started the tractor. We think the mom was killed :( They were still pink; no fur. So we tried to take care of them for a few days. In a box, with fresh towels. Feeding them with a syringe, up every 3 hours! We took turns during the night.
People thought I was a lunatic for doing this for baby mice! But I didnt care.
After a few days; they were lethargic. Not moving much. I took them to a nature facility by me. They had to euthanize them.
I was hysterical; that it had to happen. Like I couldn't breathe...hysterical. Just couldnt get over it.
I have a soft spot for helpless animals. And it sux. You had no choice; he was in pain. He is OK now. But trust me; I know how painful it is to endure.
I still had pictures of them on my phone; and when I looked at them; it made me so sad all over again; That I had to delete them.

Re: Talk me off the ledge
You are human, you have a heart. Clearly you have a heart. I am so sorry you had to endure this, but please try to take solace that you helped this rabbit to end it's suffering. Thank you for your kindness. I am sorry it's hitting you so hard but again, you are clearly a caring person.

Re: Talk me off the ledge
It was out of your hands. It was going to happen anyway, them ending the suffering was better than it roasting in the sun suffering all day. You made a better choice than I did on the Fourth of July. A baby blue bird was under my car as we were leaving for a family party in which we were already late for. It's little foot was messed up and I wanted to put in in a shoebox and rescue it. My husband was rushing us all so I didn't. The next day, I saw the bird dead on my neighbor's lawn which made me think about this poor bird for about 2 weeks. You made the better choice!
