Talk to me about CIO at just over 5 months?

Because I'm at my wits end. Even naps are now a nightmare.

Re: Talk to me about CIO at just over 5 months?

I did this with Luca. He responded very, very well to it.

We had to do it because he needed his pacifier to fall asleep, but as soon as it fell out of his mouth he was up screaming.

We replaced his pacifier with a lovey and did CIO a few days after 5 months. DH and I jointly decided to give him an hour. He screamed bloody murder and I had to do the dishes to drown out the noise. He was asleep within 1/2 hour. The next night he cried for 20 minutes. Night three (if i recall correctly) he was out within a few minutes.

And I am probably jinxing myself here but since six months he has been STTN for 12 hours with only one small bout of waking at night because of an ear infection. We always gave Motrin while he was teething so we never had to go in an comfort him for that - if he woke up, he'd cry for a minute and then hug his lovey and go back to sleep.

My real issue is the fact that he's going to wake up Jack (although if he didn't wake him up last night with his 5+ hours of screaming, maybe I will be in the clear)

It doesn't seem that he can soothe himself though, that's my one real issue. But, I don't think I can wait another three weeks until he turns 6 months. I won't make it that long if this keeps up

We started at 2 days shy of 5 months. The first night, she fell asleep immediately but woke up an hour later. We did the graduated method, where we went in after 3 minutes, then 5, then 7, then 10. The first night it took her 42 minutes to go to sleep, and we had to go in 4 times. The next 3 nights, we only had to go in once.

It worked like a charm, and it was the best thing I ever did. She now sleeps from 6 until 6, takes a bottle, I change her diaper, and she goes back until 8. I think you should give it a shot, for your sanity at least. Good luck.

Re: Talk to me about CIO at just over 5 months?

Just saw this after responding to your other post. What is a lovey? My son is dependent on his pacifier too and we have to get up several times a night to put it back in his mouth. I also have the problem of worrying that letting him scream will wake up his sister (their rooms are right next to eachother).
How old do they have to be to give infant Motrin? I've only given Tylenol so far because I thought he was too young, but Motrin definitely works better for teething.....

A lovey is one of those little blanket thingies for them to hold on to.

I am counting down the days till he turns six months so that I can give Motrin. Tylenol doesn't even compare IMO.

We did it with J at 5.5 months. He was only sleeping in the swing at that point and getting up every hour. We couldn't take it anymore. We did the swing and broke the swaddle at the same time. It took a few days, but was definitely worth it.

I started sleep training DS at the end of 5 months. In my case it worked like a charm 4 nights and he was STTN, but every kid is different, all you can do is give it a try.

I am not doing it, only b/c I KNOW he is teething and I can't let him CIO when it could possibly be from REAL pain/discomfort.

I always thought that the point of CIO was to teach them to self-soothe. I think Tyler can do it, he just needs to learn/teach himself Chat Icon

I would say to try it for 2-3 nights. If it doesn't work, you can always stop. Although I do think I would wait a couple of nights to see if it was just the tooth coming in that was making him miserable. Will he take the Hyland's teething tablets?

And I think Jack will be fine, does he have a humidifier or sound machine in his room?

Re: Talk to me about CIO at just over 5 months?

We are about to start it soon..(probably this weekend) ..But I'm doing the graduated method...after my experiences with Noah and some research, I cant just let them CIO till they fall asleep, and with Two in one room, I have to make some adjustments.

I just got the hylands teething gell too and it works really well on Chloe.

GOod luck!

Re: Talk to me about CIO at just over 5 months?

We did CIO with jacen at 5 1/2 months. We had to. Both of us worked FT and for 2 1/2 months he was getting up 3-5 times a night. He didn't know how to self soothe. He used pacifiers, but he was too young to really get them and put them in. He never took to a lovey.

We did CIO w/extinction. Going in only made him more mad and made the process longer because it restarted every time we went in.

We slowly weaned him down on the # of nighttime bottles and then decided we'd only feed him during a certain time frame (1-3am) if he woke up. Every other time, we'd let him cry.

The 1st night was the hardest. But it only took one night! Chat Icon

Whatever you do, don't lay there and listen to it. Do laundry. Vacuum. Watch taped shows. Anything, but sit there... watching and listening. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

You CAN do it. Just stay strong!!! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Just so you know, it was the BEST decision we ever made and it was the BEST thing for him too. His naps and nighttime were just such a mess and he was so overtired all the time, that he was miserable 24/7.

We started CIO early and it worked well for us. No problems with sleeping after we got through about an hour of screaming / crying for those first 2 nights in a row.
