TDaP booster shot and MIL Vent
I went to the OB on Friday for my 28 week checkup. At the appointment, they offered me a TDaP (Tetanus, Diphtheria & Pertussis) booster shot. Has anyone else had their OB office offer this to them yet?? I had a booster when DD was born 3 years ago, and I'm just not crazy about the idea of getting another vaccine while i'm pregnant so that the antibodies can cross the placenta (shouldn't my antibodies from last time be doing that anyway?) Anyway, this is a very new suggestion by the CDC to give this booster to pregnant women and i'm just not comfortable with it.
But I did go home and told DH that they want everyone that is going to be around the baby to get boosters. I called my dad and brother and they instantly agreed to go to their dr and get the shot. I mentioned it to my IL's and my MIL instantly has a face on. She says she thinks this is just a ploy by the pharmaceutical companies to make more money. DH and i both said that the drs are saying there has been a sharp increase in the number of infant deaths due to pertussis, and THAT is why they are insisting people get boosters. She was visibly annoyed and I can tell she doesn't want to go and get the shot. Then she complained she's going to have to go to her doctor rather than someplace like CVS and they are going to want her to get a physical. Huffing and puffing and eye rolling ensued.
Now I am annoyed because she's the first one to call her MD for a Z-pak when she has a sniffle, she goes for her flu shot every year and she went for an MMR booster for her job. But, i ask her to get a shot to protect her grandchild, and it's a problem?! What the hell!!!!
Sorry to vent, but this one REALLY ticked me off!

Just tell her that's fine you can do whatever you want about the booster but if you choose not to get it you will not be allowed around the baby until X number of weeks/months.
She will change her tune!

Re: TDaP booster shot and MIL Vent
Thanks ladies. She will go, but begrudgingly. Especially because we didn't say anything about this when DS or DD were born, so now she's just going to be a child and stomp her feet and whine. But she'll go in the end. it's just the point that she has to make it about HER and her constant cynicism and negativity about everything.

Yup. I should have done this with my ILs. I had gotten my booster just before getting pregnant so it was never offered to me. If it's offered this time, I will get it. DH and my whole family got their boosters. I will definitely be bringing it up to ILs again.

My baby is a month old, but I've not heard of this. None of my parents or anyone got that shot so I wouldn't worry. I got the shot in the hospital. I would reccomend at the very least your DH gets it as well. I think your MIL will eventually get over it and stop being a baby

I got the shot in the hospital after I gave birth and no one ever even mentioned anyone else having to get it.

As for your MIL, I would just make a rule that no one w/out the shot can hold baby.... the Tdap is a HUGE shot, and believe you me, you would much rather have everyone get the shot or stay away then deal with whooping cough. One of our VERY good friends is a PICU/NICU nurse and sees it very often, it's heartbreaking.
And re the shot during pregnancy, I got it at 30ish weeks, I was fine. Was super glad I got it because I WANTED it when pregnant so that my antibodies do cross over for extra protection to DS. If you had it 3 years ago, there is no guarantee that the antibodies are still in you (likely not the same way) and they recommend re-doing it after that amount of time. But it's totally up to you, they offered it to me in the hospital after DS was born in case I hadn't gotten it before, that's when DH got it.

TDaP booster shot and MIL Vent
I got it 2.5 years earlier right after i had my first and then again around 28 weeks pregnant with my second. They changed the recommendation I think bc it can pass protection on to the baby. My OB said since so many kids are not being vaccinated pertussis has really made a come back. DD2 was in the NICU and a nicu nurse gave it to DH and the grandparents right there for free. They give it to anyone close to the baby who is willing to get it. If you think she'll get it anyway then I'd just ignore her antics as best you can. You can try calling her local CVS to see if they have it in stock and the cost with her insurance. They are really great with shots so I don't know why she said she can't go to them?

TDaP booster shot and MIL Vent
I'll be getting the Tdap shot tomorrow at my 36 week appointment. My husband got it last week at his primary doctor, as did both my mother and father who will be around the baby quite a bit. DH is going to talk to his parents and see when the last time they had a booster shot. If not recently, he'll ask them to get it, too.

Re: TDaP booster shot and MIL Vent
I don't mean to be snide, honestly, but you are choosing not to follow your docs recommendation regarding getting the shot while pregnant, and yet are frustrated that your mil is also not following the docs recomendation. This I think is the problem with invoking personal feelings for not getting vaccines. Whose to say one persons reasons make more sense than another's for declining a recommended vaccine. That said, I think she should get the shot, and as the mom you have evey right to make the rules about who gets to be around the baby. Pertussis is no joke! My niece had it. It was awful. Good luck.

I agree with this 100% and the thought crossed my mind too. The doctor is recommending YOU, the mother carrying the child, get the shot and you are choosing not to. Yet, your MIL, who the doctor also recommends gets the shot since its recommended that immediate family and/or friends frequently interacting with the child get the vaccine, is hesitant to get it. As previous poster said, everyone has their own reasons for wanting vs. not wanting to get it, but I feel that you're being hypocritical by not getting it and being upset/mad when other people are resistant to get it as well.

Re: TDaP booster shot and MIL Vent
I was given the shot at the hospital after I gave birth and DH got it as well. I did make my parents aware of the recommendation (my in laws already had it after my nephew was born) and my parents happily went if it meant protecting their new grandson. if they chose not to or didn't have a chance to, I would've been ok with that too but I was happy that they got it no questions asked.

IMO, this shot is more important than the flu shot. Pertussis is no joke. I had it 3 times as an adult. I recommend everyone does some research on not only getting it themselves but also about having immediate family getting it as well. The CDC has a lot of info.

TDaP booster shot and MIL Vent
I won't let anyone hold DD if they haven't had it. I really prefer they don't even visit.
My MIL works in the school and my FIL goes to a rehab center daily, so it wasn't even an option, if they wanted to come around DD they had to get it. My dad gave me the hardest time, but as our GP is his golf partner, our GP made him get it.
It's not a stupid shot to get anyhow. Besides the percussus, its Tetanus. Step on a nail, get a rusty cut, you will be glad you had it. In my first trimester I cut myself on glass and I was a little freaked out because I couldn't get the Tetanus shot and I hadn't had it.

Re: TDaP booster shot and MIL Vent
I had it 3 years ago and had it boostered per the CDC's and my OB recommendations at 29 weeks this time. Not the most I admit but it is what is recommended. Your body is no longer producing active antibodies that would protect your newborn in utero at this time so that is why they recommend getting it while the baby is is still inside you so it is born with some level of protection (if you are boostered after baby comes out that does not good for the baby..which is what they used to recommend). They have no protection till the 2 month visit where they get their own first DTap. Just food for thought.

She doesn't want it WHILE pregnant. That's different than not at all. Most hospitals give it when you are going home.

Re: TDaP booster shot and MIL Vent
I got it when leaving the hospital with my girls. DH didn't (b/c Sandy hit and things were hectic) but he will this time. I didn't tell anyone to get it but they aren't around my kids all that often. If MIL and my mom are going to be around this baby a lot then I will ask them to get it. I don't foresee them having an issue since its in the baby's best interest.

Yes, I understand that. My point is that ACOGs recommendation is that pregnant women receive the shot to bolster their baby's immunity in utero. She declined because she is not comfortable with the recommendation. Her mother in law also appears uncomfortable with the recommendation that other care takers receive the shot, but this is to the consternation of the OP. Point is they are both rejecting the ACOG recommendation based on personal feelings.

Re: TDaP booster shot and MIL Vent
I still don't get this whole TDaP thing - my DH went to get it this time around and the doctor strongly advised him against it - because he had it 3 years ago when DD1 was born. He said it's "good" for 5 years. One of the nurses said pretty much the same thing to me when I asked about it after I had delivered.
